Lathrop is advertised in the brochure as a long hike, which is likely why not too many people do it. I've hiked it twice and only seen a total of three other people on the trail.
The trick at Lathrop is that you can hike about 3 miles out and come to the canyon rim and have awesome views. From that point you can turn around for a six mile roundtrip hike, or you can keep going down into the canyon a bit. I recommend continuing on about another half mile, until the trail turns away from the main canyon and the view disappears.

The hike to the overlook on the Lathrop Canyon trail is about 5 miles RT. You start out at the roadside trail head walking in a beautiful plains setting. Golden grasses leaning into the breezes, back-lit by the early rising sun and gorgeous, tiny, delicate flowering blooms on either side of the narrow but level trail. When you get to the overlook portion (the plains give way to slickrock scrambling but nothing hard), the views are unbelievably breathtaking. The floor of the canyons and the Colorado River are way, way down below (lots of wide open space to walk around and take panoramic photos of the multi-colored plateaus, the canyon itself and the river).drop-offs so watch your step if heights are an issue for you). From the overlook terrain, you can then proceed down a long series of switchbacks to get to the floor of the canyon. Some hikers will hike on to the river and camp in designated areas. Be warned: the hike back up is strenuous (elevation gain about 1,400'). If you do the full hike, it's about 20 miles + or - not something I'd want to try in the middle of summer when temps can climb to over 100 degrees. But we went in early October and the weather was fantastic. You will have the trail mostly to yourself which is SWEET! Beautiful scenery, solitude, only the sound of breezes - what more could you possible ask for?

Approximately 16 miles down the White Rim Road, as measured from the Shafer Trail turnoff on Route 313, there’s a sign at a turnoff saying Lathrop Canyon, Colorado River, 4 Miles. As far as I’m aware, it’s the only way to get down to the Colorado River on the west side of the White Rim Road. We happened to be travelling in June, when it was excruciatingly hot on the White Rim Road, so we decided to make the trek down to the river and we were definitely happy we did. The 4 mile detour is a relatively easy side trip but it definitely requires a high clearance 4X4 vehicle. The only mildly challenging part of the road is at the top when the road first leaves the White Rim Road. After that you travel down Lathrop Canyon until you meet the Colorado River.
There’s a boat landing along with picnic tables plus a latrine, but most importantly, it has TREES! The White Rim Road has essentially no trees, ergo, no natural shade except for what your vehicle might provide. So after suffering with no shade since the beginning of our trip, it was a pleasure to find a shady picnic area to relax in. Even though it was still over 100 degrees, it was an absolute pleasure to jump in the Colorado River to cool off in before continuing on our trip.

Lathrop canyon is a beautiful area of Canyonlands. We came in by boat and camped riverside. I would love to hike in, if I had the time.
