This is perhaps one of the best spots to get great views of the Black Canyon. The short trek to the viewpoint areas will allow you to see clear to the canyons bottom and Gunnison River below. Hang on to your kid's hand though! It is a long way down to the bottom!!

This view is good if you want to try to hike to the base/river from the rim. It is a very challenging hike and you must registrar with the rangers befroe you start. Have good boots and water. We saw folks try this in gym shoes an sandels, they did not make it.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison has been an unexpected beauty . A lot of spots aside the road allow to view incredible views. Strongly suggested to walk a bit to see from the observation points.

All the overlooks along the south rim drive are spectacular, and each shows a different aspect of the canyon's geology. The light is different at each, too... giving the photographers a chance to capture views at each place. This overlook shows both sides of the canyon, so you can see how the river and geology have interacted differently on each... More

Pulpit Rock gives a good view of the difference in the weathering erosion of the north and south faces of the canyon. Awesome view. Each viewpoint presents a different angle of the gorge.

I actually prefer this lookout to painted wall. Painted wall gets so much coverage and this one was nearly empty and peaceful and the sheer vertical drop down made it much more of an experience for me. It's not a long walk to the overlook, either, so it's worth checking out.

This is one of the best overlooks in the park. Take your time and look both up and down the canyon. It is amazing how far and what you can see if you just take a little time, slow down and look.. Their are great views of the river and the different colors of the canyon walls. Take your time... More

Easy walk to the rock and rim edge. It offers great views and photo opportunities. It sure seems like a pulpit out there where one could orate to the masses.
