The road was closed due to snow the day I visited. I decided to hoof it in and walked the road to various scenic overviews by foot. If the weather is good and you have time, I would recommend doing this... but it's probably better done in a car. However the views were spectacular and I'm looking forward to visiting... More

The South Rim Road is a 7-mile drive out to the various viewing points. Some are a short distance from the road, others require a hike. About halfway down the road is the view point for the Painted Wall. It is the most well-known of the park's sights and is just beautiful!

It's a beautiful drive along the rim of the canyon, easily accessible from Montrose or Gunnison. There are many pullouts to walk out to, and the signage for history and geology are well done.

We toured the South Rim and enjoyed the canyons and the views immensely. We went toward the end of October and were also blessed by views of snow topped mountains from this vantage point. There are several stops so there are some for everyone....the hikers as well as those not in tiptop shape. We will go back again.

The South Rim Road is the only way to access the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park by car. It is a long and windy road with many observation areas to stop at and view the canyon.

I have been on the North Rim, the South Rim, the West Elk loop and the East Elk loop; all are stunning with great views of the canyon. There are easy turn-outs and viewing points.

you can look across the canyon (less than a mile!) to the other sighed. And look down 1500' or more. An interesting variation of the Grand Canyon-type experience.

A must to see if possible. Incredible views from the look overs. You can look a mile down into the base of the canyon.

The only day we left the ranch was to visit the canyon and it was well worth it. The views are stunning.
