This short road takes you to several scenic turnouts along the beautiful Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The depth of the canyon doesn't allow for much hiking in the area and it is not quite as grand as the Grand Canyon...but still worth a visit.

This is an interesting national park that revolves the Gunnison river gorge. While it's not as deep as the Grand Canyon, the narrowness of it actually makes it feel more dramatic than the Grand Canyon. You really get the sense of the steep cliffs and the deepness. There are many good overlooks, most of which only require a short walk... More

We've lived in Colorado four years but never made it to the park. But we decided to take the long way home from Moab and stop by. I'm glad we did. The canyon was spectacular. It exceeded our expectations by a wide margin. Considering its narrow width and depth, it was unique in our experience. If we had the time... More

Love this area and it is all paved where as north rim is not. Great views and you can take it at your pace with lots of turn outs.

Since they are all very short I'd suggest you to take all the stops you can, else your visit to Black Canyon will be over very fast ;) And of course the views are awesome.

& mile drive with a number of overlooks and short hikes. Probably about 3 hours to do it all fully. Canyon is excellent and this is the best introduction.

The whole drive along here is amazing. Terrific views without even getting out of the car, except it's awesome to get out and see all the stops up close for sure! Plenty of stops with any where between 100-600 feet to a view point. Exhausting by end of day because there is so much, which is actually awesome. Well maintained... More

This is my third trip to this park. The experience gets better every time. Perhaps it's maturity. After 40+ years of visiting National Parks I'm still at a loss to express the wonder and breathtaking experiences these parks provide to me. Black Canyon is wholely unique. Make sure you take a geology walk with a Ranger like Mary Jane Masters.... More

The south rim drive is gorgeous. There are around 12 pull offs and are well worth it. Take your time and enjoy them all. Well worth it. It is only around 15 minutes from Montrose.
