I expected to see flat land and desert here. What a wonderful surprise. The Badlands are amazing - the rock formations are awe inspiring. This is a great drive - we spent almost all day here. Even saw some buffalo.
The visitors center for the Badlands has a good movie telling all about the Badlands along with displays telling how they were formed and the wildlife and animals in the park. They also have a fossil lab which describes the fossils found in the park.
The visitor's center is loaded with info about the Badlands, their development, and the archeological importance of the park. We were there in mid-September and it was very busy and a little close in the exhibit areas.
My husband and I enjoyed 20 minutes at the visitor center. The Ben Reifel Visitor Center had a small museum, gift shop, fossil area and nice restrooms. The visitor center could use more picnic tables. Most of the tables were covered.
The visitors center was a good source of information on the area. Many books for children and adults, nice postcards. They show a video about the animals and plants in the area, both now and in the past. Park rangers are available to answer questions.
The visitor center offers you a detailed history of this region and how the Badlands came to be. S must stop on the loop road for history and geology buffs. The fossil room is great to watch the scientists work
