This is not as large as the Ben Reifel Visitors’ Center, but it was still a good use of our time. It is located on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in the South Unit of the park. The exhibits focus on the Oglala Sioux tribal history and culture, which we found very interesting.

We were glad we made the drive to the South Unit. It is a pretty area

It took us about an hour to get to this smaller visitor center for the Stronghold Unit of Badlands National Park. Had intended to go rock hounding along the way on hwy 44 in the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands area, but it had rained the day before that the wet sand was just too soggy. The Visitor Center was small but still had great information on Native American history and culture in the area. The ranger, Richard, was very friendly and helpful. And they have restrooms on site as well. On the way back to Badlands National Park (North Unit - pretty much the main bulk of the park), at the advise of Richard, we took Sage Creek Rd (unpaved, but in good condition), and we got a close up glimpse of local farms/fields, buffalos (they had been rounded up already and were in a fenced area near Roberts Prarie Dog town), and beautiful views. Would definitely recommend a visit if you have time, but call ahead to make sure it's open and opens only seasonally - (605) 455-2878. Oh, and it has a cancellation stamp station (also tribal stamps) if you are collecting stamps with the National Parks Passport booklet.

The people at the place was nice and helpful with information about the park, rangers’ activities and some history of the place. The place is small and a bit hard to find.

It wasn't easy for us to find, but felt it was worth the drive.
Small, without all the book store stuff of the bigger visitor center. but it's got your passport stamp, & information about the area. The ranger was very helpful, told us that BIA according to an elder in his tribe stands for not, Bureau of Indian Affairs, but instead, Boss Indians Around, can understand that sentiment perfectly.
He also directed us back to where we needed to be via an unpaved highway with a 50 MPH speed limit, a first for us. And clued us into the fact that you know you are on Indian land if the highway marker has an arrowhead on it. Duh, missed that completely.
Glad we found our way here.

We loved our stop at this small visitor center. We learned a lot about Lakota history and met some great people. The drive there was beautiful, and we got to see a landscape that was different than what is found around the campsites and main visitor center.

This visitor center is worth stopping in to see the exhibits and spend a few minutes refreshing yourself. Especially after a drive through the park.

We were greeted by an entusiastic ranger, who gave us useful information and tips about things to do in the southern part of Badlands National Park.

We enjoyed our time here at the Visitor Center. Lots of very nice things to shop for. The restrooms came in handy as well. Little restaurant inside if you need that!

We were quite impressed with this whole national park and this was our first taste. There were a lot of videos about a variety of topics we could choose. We got signed up for the junior ranger program and got to see the program ‘Bombs and Bones’ by Ranger Earl. That was really really interesting. There was an amazing American Indian artist offering artwork for sale outside the center.
