tree lined trails, great views of lakes and oceans

moderately strenuous hike, with good shade on the trails, and rewarding views at the top. Parking lot is small and fills up quickly in the summer, so arrive early

We hiked up the shorter, more strenuous route with a 4yo. Once you're high up enough to see a view you can stop on some large flat rocks for picture or snack break. The fire tower wasn't open on the day we were there but you can still climb halfway up the stairs to a landing for a nice view.... More

The loop trail is about three miles in length with the highlight being a peak view at a fire towe offering breathtaking view of surrounding lakes and bays.

The photo for this is of Beech Cliff, not Beech Mt. Please correct this. The BMT is good, but you should stay on the Bar Harbor side of the island. Much better trails--Gorham, the Beehive, the Precipice, Champlain Mt., Dorr, etc. Do the park loop and leave MDI! It's the best. The last time I hiked up Beech Mt. There... More

We drove over to "the quiet side of the island" to hike this trail simply because the fire tower was open. So glad we did! There are two trail options from the parking lot. When you enter the Beech Mt trailhead next to the restrooms the trail forks almost immediately, the right trail is a longer less strenuous climb with... More

Some of the best parts of Mount Desert Island (MDI) and Acadia National Park are outside of the main tourist trap of Park Loop Road. Make it a priority to hike up the Beech Mountain Trail on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon (1pm-3pm) in order to get a bonus treat of climbing to the top of the old Fire Tower.... More

Hiked the Beech Mountain trail with our teens in late June during our visit to MDI. Take Pretty Marsh Road just south of Somesville and turn left to drive to the end for Beech Mtn. parking lot. There are multiple trails that originate at the lot, a trail book can be helpful. For the reasonable loop, take the Beech Mtn... More

We did this hike in the rain. We went up the shorter & steeper trail. The fire tower was open so we went up that too. The ranger answered our questions about the area and took some pics of us. We came down in the longer and less steep trail, but it wasn't easy. There were rest rooms at the... More

We hiked up Beech Mountain with our 7 and 10 year olds. This is a good moderate hike, which is not too crowded (personally, I prefer the hikes on the western side of Mount Desert Island, outside of the Park Loop Road area). We chose to hike this on the day that they had the open house of the fire... More

When you leave the parking lot, you walk a little way before coming to a sign that tells you that you can take the shorter but steeper trail (4/10 of a mile) or the longer more gentle trail (7/10 of a mile). We chose the shorter route and quickly found it was rather steep. Both of us were in our... More
