This Pro-Cathedral had a Requiem Mass underway at 1430 on a Saturday when we visited.
The exterior is quite striking with a lovely dome fronting the Spanish style plaza. The interior is airy as befits the tropical climate. There was no box for general Church donations although there were three for relief agency Caritas.

San Diego Pro-Cathedral has been around for centuries. But the real secret lies behind the church where the ruins of the original structure is located. A prayer room was built in the site of the ruins.

This church was declared as a pro-cathedral in 1994.
This church is unique in Negros Occidental for being the only church in the province featuring a cupola or dome.
We dropped this church by briefy when visiting the ancestral homes in the area. I popped my head inside the church for a viewing. There were some praying. The interior is also very impressive.

Negros is one of the larger islands in the Philippines, and its economy is based around sugar. The sugar plantations are so numerous that most of the island's endemic wildlife is highly endangered, restricted to the slopes of volcanoes that were too steep to clear for sugar-cane.
The fortunes of the island have thus been tied to the fluctuating price of sugar on world markets. Today it seems a fairly backward and unhurried place, but there have been times when Negros was booming. The most visible sign of this former prosperity is the pretty town of Silay, where Filipino-Spanish sugar barons built large ancestral homes and taught their children how to play Mozart and speak European languages.
The most ostentatious sign of Silay's former wealth is the San Diego Cathedral, a massive building which would not look out of place in the centre of a major city. It was funded by the money of sugar baron Don Jose Ledesma, whose patronage once earned Silay the moniker 'The Paris of Negros'. This is a solid monument to Silay's former grandeur (it seems a quiet country town today) but we did not find it as illuminating as a visit to the ancestral homes of this town.

You cannot miss the San Diego cathedral - it's dome was based on St. Peters bascilica. Huge, silver in colour, and opposite to the public plaza of Silay.
how to reach?
Just take a bus from Bacolod city Northpoint terminal to Silay. Costs about 20 pesos, takes 20 minutes.
The interiors of the church are beautiful, and if you get an opportunity, do sit for the mass.

Silay’s Catholic church is at the heart of the old town. It was built in 1927 on donated funds of sugar baron Don Jose Ledesma. Very relaxed atmosphere inside.Reachable by public transport from Bacolod North bus terminal (about 40 min ).

This fine cathedral provides a wealth of architecture, urban planning, connection to earlier history, and peace that is unique to the rich collection of buildings in Silay City.
The church's layout , by Italian architect Lucio Bernasconi, is in the shape of a Latin cross, with a cupola rising forty meters above the nave. Construction was completed in 1927. The new church was inaugurated that same year. Lucio Bernasconi was also responsible for the design and construction of the Silay Wharf, which was razed by Imperial Japanese soldiers during the Second World War.
The church has a wonderful relation to the public plaza, and full of bold architectural moves and details. The soaring spaces inside provide a perfect haven for peace and connection. If I lived in Silay City, I would probably visit this place of worship more than once a week just to absorb the many riches it has to offer.

This is the first pro-cathedral in negros island and it is noted by its perfect dome which is very magnificent. If the photographer is good and will take a picture from the vantage point of the fountain area, you can take a picture that this will appear like the Taj Majal.

This is the center of Catholic faith in Silay. It is also one of the evidences that Silay is among the Visayas islands that were colonized by the Spaniards. The building of this cathedral is financed by well off Spanish descendants in Negros.
