An Icelandic yarn store with finished yarn products and knitting supplies. Prices for sweaters, hats, and such were better than the tourist shops. A sweet lady in the shop gave some history and talked about local things to see and do. I bought a crochet book in English.

Just wanted to share my incredible experience with ordering some goods from the Online Shop (from Australia). I visited Iceland in May this year (what a beautiful country with wonderful people!) and bought 3 gorgeous little woolen elves as gifts. After I got back I wanted more and so did a Google search and came up with Alafoss. They replied really promptly to my email and even tho they did not stock the elves they quickly sourced them for me and I was able to order 3 more online. I was amazed at the quick response. Then unfortunately the parcel got lost en route in Australia (no fault of Alafoss) and there ensued many emails back and forth between Alafoss and myself. They always replied very promptly and Lara at Alafoss was absolutely fantastic. She ordered more elves for me and they arrived soon after. Lara was such a delight to deal with. I can honestly say I have never had such excellent customer service before from any business! I thoroughly recommend them to anyone else wanting to purchase goods online from Alafoss.

Might say it was a pilgrimage. Took the number 15 bus out. Bought tickets for the bus the day before at one of the tourist info centers in town.
The directions on their website could use some clarification. After you get off the bus, turn around and walk back down the hill, putting the KFC behind you. Look for a white building with a red roof and stay on the path in front of that, continue straight, don't veer to the right, and at the bottom, before an athletic field, turn right and continue through the tunnel. When you get out of the tunnel, and reach a fork in the trial, veer left, over the bridge, then right, stay on the right hand side of the road, and let the yarn fumes guild you the rest of the way.
I came prepared with patterns and quantities, my only limiting factor was room in my suitcase! Honestly, given the cost of meals here, the yarn is the best deal going. If you are a knitter, no need to pay for a sweater in a shop when you can come out here and pick your own colors. Sort of loved this shop and am very glad to have been able to see it.

The selection of goods in store is good but the review is solely for the lady who was behind the counter. She is rude, sitting on a high horse and full of herself. For someone in customer service, she thinks her culture is the best and no one else is good. Way over priced goods too!

I'm not sure why this is rated so highly, maybe it's from people who want ready made sweaters, but for knitters in search of yarn it's horrible. Most of the shelves were empty with very little choice of colors. The prices were also significantly higher than the same items available in Reykjavik. The plotulopi was 3000 kr more than shops in town were selling it for. Complete waste of time, we had better luck and selection with yarn at the Netto grocery store.
The staff was very rude also.

This is the most horrible store in all of Iceland! The sakes lady that works there on 8/3 at 10 am is the worst sales lady I have met in all of Iceland. There was a sweater marked in red discount and I asked her how if the items on the same rack in deferent colors were all on sale too. She ran over and ripped out the tag abs said this was a mistake and NOTHING here is on sale. This is completely false advertising. I asked her why was it like this snd she ignored me. Terrible services. We were gonna to purchase more items but left as fast as we could. She should not be working in retail! Gives the Aldiss store a bad name. The stores in Reykjavik were much friendlier. Same prices.

I feel tricked! The store is 30 min bus ride from Reykjavik and MORE expensive than the shops in town. Lost a seriuos amount of money shopping there.
Instead go to the handknitting association in town, same range but much cheaper!!

The Alafoss shop is also partly a historic attraction and a cafe. Here you can buy hand-knitted lopapeysa (traditional jumpers), socks, hats, scarves, and all manner of other gifts and souvenirs of Iceland. The hand-knitted items have the names of the people who made them on the labels - a lovely touch.
You can also buy the wool and patterns to knit your own, and of course the shop specialises in the local lopi wool in several grades. They have introduced mail order for anyone who has travelled to Iceland and does not have suitcase space to take lots of reasonably priced wool home with them! Look out for first order discounts on online purchases, if they still apply.
We visited this shop as an unexpected extra on a tour trip, because there was not enough daylight to go straight up to the advertised destinations, and I am so glad to have seen the store in person. There is a bit of a history at the back of the shop about the building the current store occupies, which is interesting.
If you are in Iceland, near Reykjavik, and love knitting, this shop is a must-visit spot.

I do not know the physical shop but regarding webshop its total fraud. Your money is good enough but as u do not get what u have ordered it takes tens of emails, contacts via form, FB etc. to get any reply just to get the answer that sorry your order did not come through and btw. we do not have the products and will not have. After that another 10 contacts via all chanells u can imagine and no answer. You are totally ignored after they got your money. Now its left to paypal to sort it out with them.

Alafoss is a cute town to visit. This store has a very large selection of wool for knitting. I bought a ready made jacket that was quite lovely and unlike what I had seen in other stores. The shop has a large selection to choose from. I regret not buying more things. I recommend getting something you are fond of there because you might not see it elsewhere in town. Also be sure to get the forms to get the tax taken off at the airport.

I am visiting with grandchildren. Do you show how wool is made into yarn and how it is dyed?

Thanks for your review of Alafoss. Would you please share with me more information about the knife place you mentioned in your review? I am a knitter and the knife place would give my husband something to look forward too!
than you very much.

Is there any public transportation from Reykjavik to the Alafoss Wool Store?
Written August 10, 2016
Yes, there is. This is the info from the Alafoss Wool Store website:
Get on bus number 15 from Hlemmur bus station in Reykjavik (direction: Mosfellsbær). After about 30 minutes, get off at the stop "Háholt". Push the button when you have Hotel Laxness on your left side, or right after you have seen a branch of KFC – (You can ask the bus driver to assist you if you are not sure).
Walk down the hill for about 5 minutes towards the highway. You will see the Alafoss wool store building on the other side of the highway (tall white building with red roof). Walk down towards the white building where you will see a sign marked Alafoss that will guide you to a tunnel. Walk through the tunnel on your right. Follow the asphalt lane until you cross a wood bridge and then turn right to Álafosskvos. Walk straight ahead and you will see Álafoss wool store. We look forward to seeing you.
