About
When Japan emerged from centuries of isolation in the mid-19th century, Yokohama was a tiny seaside village, home to only 100 people or so. But as the tide of internationalization rose, a port was established and Yokohama began to grow as a gateway to Japan. Yokohama is now a leading international trading port, the second largest city in Japan after Tokyo. Situated just a short distance along the coast from the Japanese capital, and within easy reach of Haneda Airport, Yokohama is now a magnet for tourists not just from Japan but from every corner of the world; it's a place everyone wants to visit. Minato Mirai 21 is a modern urban development that was created, and continues to evolve, on 186ha of land. A shipbuilding facility that used to divide Yokohama's two main urban centers on Tokyo Bay was relocated, and additional land was reclaimed from the sea. In 1989 an exposition was held to mark the 100th anniversary of Yokohama's city status and the 130th anniversary of the opening of Yokohama Port. Following that event development gathered momentum, and now the area boasts office blocks, commercial facilities, hotels, amusement parks and convention facilities, as well as such cultural amenities as art museums and concert halls. This, the new face of Yokohama, offers an entire spectrum of urban functions and attracts more than 70 million visitors every year. Minato Mirai 21 is full of great experiences. The liberating expanse of Tokyo Bay and the dynamic appeal of the contemporary architecture contribute to the area's strikingly unusual beauty, which you can enjoy from the elegant surroundings of several first-class hotels. For the shopper, more than 600 stores offer an astonishingly broad selection of goods ranging from top fashion brands to animation character merchandise. Apart from excellent Japanese cuisine, delicious food from around the world is available at more than 200 restaurants. Theme parks offer exciting rides, parks a place to sit and enjoy the seascape. Packed with pleasure, Minato Mirai 21 is a fun place to visit with family and friends at any time of year, on any occasion, and for so many different reasons. If you move on to the area beyond Minato Mirai 21, you'll find intriguing glimpses of a fascinating history in the Kannai district, which developed quickly in the second half of the 19th century after the Port of Yokohama opened, and beyond Kannai you'll arrive at Japan's largest Chinatown. Yokohama offers points of interest that no other city can match. And just a day trip away are some of the best hot spring baths in Japan at Hakone, as well as the globally renowned beauty of Mt. Fuji. So after a day of fun in Minato Mirai 21, you can spend the night at one of the area's great hotels and then the next day you can be soaking in an onsen or admiring a view of Mt. Fuji. That is the special appeal of a relaxing holiday based in Japan's new leading tourism and leisure destination: Minato Mirai 21.

Minato Mirai is a nice place to walk around. There is a good view of the harbor, especially at night with the lights accenting the view. There are a number of shopping places to explore and an amusement park to enjoy rides.

The entire place is very clean and pleasant. The air is crisp and fresh. There was an Okinawan marathon on-going when I went in Nov 2019 but it did not give me any inconvenience. The view is beautiful and I felt so relax to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Highly recommended

Now I’m not a big shopper, but wether your into malls or not it’s still a good place to visit if your in the area. The waterfront walk alongside the shopping malls is very pleasant especially on a warm day, plenty of places to sit and people watch, and boy will there be plenty of people to watch, it’s very popular for locals and tourists alike.
Call in at the ‘Hard Rock’ if you fancy a beer and burger, visit the old 1930s sailing ship in the dock, have a spin on the ferris wheel of get an even better view from the Landmark Tower (tallest in Japan) if it’s a clear day you can easily see Mt Fuji. Then catch the Seabas (sea-bus) to points around the bay.

My parent stayed here and every time i visit them, I'm amazed by the view here in Minato Mirai, this is a wonderful seaside urban area. It also has a great amusement park with a gigantic ferris wheel, I also proposed to my girl friend here in 2019 and succeed. Definitely my favourite spot in the world.

Visited Minato Mirai (Yokohama) last year for a day trip and I fell in love with this place, so decided to stay here as a base for 5 nights. The overall stay was simply amazing. Christmas lights and decorations everywhere made the experience and ambiance wonderful! Minato Mirai is basically a seaside urban area which was previously a shipyard many years ago. It's a beautiful place to visit.
Recommended places to visit while you are here. The below are the places that I had visited.
1. Landmark Tower - beautiful view of Minato Mirai and it's surroundings
2. Cosmo World Ferris Wheel - you wont miss it and it looks beautiful at night.
3. Yamashita Park - A beautiful place for a nice stroll to enjoy the sea breeze/view, next to Yokohama Chinatown and Motomachi Shopping Street. (Motomachi-Chukagai Station)
4. Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse - unique shops and restaurants. Again, looks beautiful at night.
5. Yokohama Port Osanbashi - Take a 20 mins walk from Minato Mirai Station here for a nice stroll and amazing view of Minato Mirai 21. Highly recommended!
6. Loads of shopping malls - Queen's Square, The Landmark Plaza, The World Porters Mall, etc
7. Cup Noodles Museum (for kids)
8. Yokohama Chinatown - for Chinese food. (Motomachi-Chukagai Station)

From Tokyo, just take a local train (35-45mins) to Yokohama station. From there, take the Minato Mirai Line to Minato Mirai station (5mins). Have fun!

I had such a great and amazing day trip at Yokohama (especially around the Minato Mirai 21 area) that I am planning another trip to Japan, specifically to Yokohama in Dec to spend a few days! If you are in Tokyo, I would highly recommend you visit Yokohama - either a day trip or spend a couple of days here. It is just 35-45mins by train from Tokyo (Shimbashi to Yokohama).

The view (both day time and night time) of the Yokohama port is simply stunning! Spent a couple of hours just walking along side the port and taking in the beautiful view. Interesting places to visit around this area are - Landmark Tower Sky Garden (great view of Yokohama from the top), Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, Osanbashi Pier (stunning view!), shopping malls, Hard Rock Cafe Yokohama, Cup Noodles museum and many more! One can easily spend a day here, which is what we did.

We took a train from Shimbashi on the JR Tokaido Line to Yokohama station, which cost us 470yen - so easy and convenient.

MinatoMirai is actually the central business district for the city of Yokohama but it is much more than that and should be the first port of call for anyone contemplating a trip to Yokohama. The area comprises a number of high rise buildings, the most famous and the tallest being Landmark Tower where you can find many shops, boutiques, restaurants, hotels and a fabulous viewing deck that provides the best panorama of the Minatomirai/Yokohama area. Landmark connects via underground shopping tunnels to Queens A B and C buildings that sit next to each other. Each of these contain high quality shops and restaurants. Also part of Minatomirai is the new Mark IS shopping centre building- a funky shopping complex that also contains Orbi- a great nature attraction for both adults and children. The Yokohama Museum of Art is immediately adjacent the MARK IS building so you can combine shopping, dining and art gazing. The main buildings of Minatomirai overlook the bay and Cosmo world attraction park sits on the water where you find a huge ferris wheel and exciting roller coaster. Also sitting in the port is the historic sailing ship Nippon Maru which you can pay a fee to enter. Wander around the port area and you will see various sculptures. Another shopping centre/food area is the Collette Mare building which is right next to Sakuragicho station. It has a walk way that joins you up to Landmark and Queens Tower buildings.

When you exit JR Sakuragicho station, you can either take the escalators leading up to Landmark tower, or walk down to the intersection and head in the direction of the port and walk along the waterfront. Minatomirai is particularly pretty at night when the ferris wheel lights up and the buildings are lit up so try and stay for the evening. The other way to get to MinatoMirai is on the subway- catch the TokyuTohoku Minatomirai line and get off at Minatomirai station. This brings you to the bottom of the Queens Tower C building.

Also within easy walking distance of Minatomirai is Aka Renga (Red Brick warehouse) complex- lots of shops and restaurants located in a historic old warehouse sitting on the port. Worth a visit. You can then continue walking past Aka Renga along the waterfront to Osanbashi Pier, then Yamashita Park and finish with a wander down Motomachi Street before catching a train from Motomachi-Chukagai station.

The area is much less crowded than Tokyo and it is very pleasant wandering along the water. There are also many activities and festivals often happening down in Minatomirai so check the Yokohama Visitors Guide before you head down there!
