I'm 60 and my daughter is 17, it was our first time ever in Japan (Tokyo to be exact). We spent 3 days at Tokyo Disney, which was a lot of fun, but the best time we had was on the Tokyo Bicycle Tour. Neil, from Ohio, and a ten year Tokyo resident, was a super informative host, as well as a super nice guy. The pace of the tour was what you wanted it to be, which means Neil knew how to keep it fast enough for my daughter, but a pace a sixty year old with a bad knee, especially bad after three days of walking Disney, could handle. We had a great feel for the city, and better understanding of the Japanese culture, after this tour. Plus my daughter, a camera buff, got lots of great pictures. I highly recommend anyone, of any age (and I hadn't ridden a bike in over forty years), put this tour on their list of first things do do when visiting Tokyo for the first time. The price is reasonable and well worth it! In a small side note - across the street and down a block from the tour office - for those who love bagels - is a really nice bagel shop (run by a really nice young guy who attended NY Culinary school) - my daughter a bagel lover said be sure to stop there too!

It's our first time in Tokyo and only had 3 days to see and experience as much of the city as we can. While trains are run efficiently and most attractions are a walking distance from stations, it keeps you underground and corralled into crowded areas. We were lucky to find Lonely Planet's #4 top thing to do in Tokyo (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/japan/tokyo/activities/cycling/tokyo-rent-bike) and went for the 4-hour guided bike ride. We covered more places and with a lot more fun and freedom than going by trains. Our American guide, Neil, made the trip easy-going. I liked how it allowed us to see both the touristy places, and some nooks and crannies we otherwise could not have seen.
The ride could be either invigorating or as laid back as we wish, we just had to say so. There were a couple of hills we had to power through, but the 6-gear lightweight city bikes made that manageable even for non-riders like me. I had the satisfaction, knowing the route was well-planned to take me to the best stuff there is to see in the area.

My wife wanted to book a tour group to see Tokyo. I preferred going on our own. To address her concerns, I booked a bike tour for our family with Neil. We found him to be very personable and knowledgeable of central Tokyo. This ended up being a great way to quickly see a lot of central Tokyo.
The bikes were well maintained and he has a number to choose from for riders to find the one most comfortable. I would caution that the bike ride itself through Tokyo could potentially be challenging for those with poor balance. While it was not physically challenging if you are in any decent shape, the challenge was weaving through and around crowds and obstacles. This is not a "ride in the park" with big paths. Expect to ride a LOT on the sidewalks. If you are not prepared to quickly brake or maneuver around people or vehicles that approach, you may not enjoy the ride to the full extent possible. Also, if you have kids under 12 that do not regularly ride at home (doing stunts or at least quickly swerving through the streets of your neighborhood) then this ride will be challenging in that sense and I would HIGHLY recommend helmets for their safety. I would caution similarly for any adults that are not physical fit or agile that have not ridden bikes much during their lives. Most of the route is flat-ish or on a decline and for the parts that are steep, Neil will have you walk the bikes.
The selection of stops is also quite good. Neil has good timing and we were able to catch a traditional Japanese wedding at the temple. We were also able to walk through Harajuku to get crepes and take note of shops we wanted to return to see. We also go to take a few pictures in the park when we stopped for a minute or two as Neil explained the area. Most of the half day 4 hour tour was on the bike though with about 15 minutes of very short stops for explanation of the area and about 3 times for about 15 minutes each to explore around Shibuya crossing, Harajuku, and Meiji Jingu shrine, as well as a quick stop to take hits at the batting center at Meiji Park.
Overall, the price was reasonable, the ride was fun and informative, and Neil was a terrific English speaking guide. For me personally, this was one of the top highlights of our first trip to Japan and was good that we scheduled it our second day there. Money very well spent to maximize a quick trip to Tokyo. On a related note, Neil was very responsive in making arrangements for this tour via email. I would highly recommend this bike tour, with the aforementioned cautionary notes. Thanks again, Neil! :)

Planned a quick trip to Tokyo. As it was our first time there, we wanted to see a lot of the sites. The Tokyo Bicycle Tour was the perfect way to see the city. I was glad to have an Expat guide who spoke both English and Japanese. It was a moderately intense activity, with good rest points along the way. Neil (our guide) explained sites and rituals well and answered our touristy questions. Seeing that a lot of people cycle in Tokyo made us feel like we're taking part in what locals do and we enjoyed the whole experience. The tour price is reasonable compared to other bicycle tours, which was good for budget tourists like us!

I did this bicycle tour with my husband and two friends in April 2018. We booked it last minute, and Neil accommodated us by offering an afternoon Tokyo Tour (blue route). We met him at his garage, which is easily accessible by foot or metro.
It was a beautiful sunny day, but I’m glad we brought an extra layer for when the sun went down. Neil helped us each adjust our seats and made sure we were comfortable by having us do a test ride in the little side road. He gave us a water bottle, brief explanation of the route, had us sign a waiver, and we were off! It was easy to follow him, and he was great about waiting for us at corners, checking back, and stopping for breaks, photographs, and information.
We cycled all around the city for six (6) hours! He stopped along the way to give us information about the city, history, culture, and sights. We saw shrines, important buildings, gardens, streets, parks, statues, and more! He was open to all questions we asked. We stopped off for bathroom and snack breaks, walked through the Meiji Shrine, and bought crepes and peeked in shops along Takeshita Street. We rode up to the gates of the National Diet and along the moat of the Imperial Palace at sunset. We even stopped off at the batting cages to partake in Japan’s national sport! Neil paid for us each to hit 20 balls. What a fun experience! We stopped off at Tokyo Tower as the sun went down and lights came on. We also took at break at Roppongi Hill to admire sculptures, ambience, and moon above the city lit up at night - beautiful!
It was the perfect balance of cycling, breaks, snacks and information. Neil catered to our abilities - allowing us to speed down some roadways and cautiously dare to cycle through the notoriously crowded sidewalks and crossings. Despite the busy streets, we all managed to stay together and no one had any collisions with pedestrians.
I would highly recommend this bike tour. The price was very reasonable, and the time just flew by. It was a fun and unique way to see the city. This was an unforgettable experience for me and my friends!

I took the all day tour "tour of Tokyo" and loved it. I saw more of Tokyo in one day than I know I could have seen in several days of sightseeing by metro. It is a great introduction to the city but you need to feel comfortable with biking through a variety of urban areas and congested streets. Our guide was very professional and timed our sites and rests perfectly. We were able to experience a cultural/historical variety of Tokyo and I appreciated being able to go to some non-tourist areas. Would recommend this to English speaking first-timers to Tokyo who appreciate an opportunity to see the city in a short amount time.

Like others before us, we LOVED the bike ride through Tokyo's neighbourhoods. We saw parks, shrines, cemeteries, shops, canals, and baseball batting fields. We even went through the Love Hotel area! We did the 4 hour tour, but it was closer to five as we had a bit of a slow start due to Neil patiently accommodating our 7 year-old son! When he first tried the bike (and helmet) Neil had for him, I thought we'd have to scrap the idea and go home. He was a wobbly mess and I was anticipating crowded streets of nightmare traffic etc. Well Neil was very cruisey about it and we set off. In no time at all, our son was racing along, keeping up with Neil and having a whale of a time - as were we! The main thing to know is that you ride on the footpaths, which are wide, and it's obviously ok to ride on them, because plenty of people do. The bikes are low-riders - sort of 1950's style city bikes - and are comfy and a bit quaint! And in any case, I didn't see any crazy traffic - everyone is so considerate - so the roads are no big deal. Everything you see is fascinating, and the baseball batting pitch is brilliant. I'm not sporty, but even I got into it! You get a sense of the neighbourhood demographics and Neil points out unique point of interest. We stopped for the yummiest crepe I've ever had (huge!) in Takeshita Street (watch how you say that one!) After the ride, we wanted an early dinner, so Neil directed us to a local riverside restaurant area where we found an excellent Hawaiian/Japanese place! What a brilliant day. Take a parka and a backpack to put it into if you need. There are no major hills - if I can do it, you can! Oh, and take the kids, they'll adore it!

Our family of 5 completed the 6 hour city tour in January and found it a wonderful way to start our time in Tokyo. The directions and map on Neil's website were excellent and easy to follow so we easily found our way to the meeting place.
Neil took us to lots of areas of Tokyo that we would never have found on our own, and the distance we cycled in 6 hours was amazing - sometimes on quiet streets while other times on busy roads. Neil took time to let us know where we were going next and how long it would take to get there. He has wonderful local knowledge and explained the sights and sounds of Tokyo.
We loved our cycling day and were able to visit many areas of Tokyo in one day. Tokyo is a very cycle friendly city, and we never felt threatened by traffic at any time.
If you have limited time in Tokyo, or just want to get orientated, a cycle tour is a great way to see lots in one day.

Emailed these guys last minute on the day before I wanted to go, a day that was not a normally scheduled day for them. Neil wrote back and was happy to accommodate. The next day I got lost on my way there. Finally made it, ended up being probably 30 or so minutes late, maybe even a little more. No fun, especially in the humidity. Neil not only waited, but he actually had even gone out on a search and rescue mission for us. :D
Chatted with him a bit to find that not surprisingly he's a fellow traveler, he's originally from the U.S., and has been living in Japan now for 10 years. Always love to hear people's stories off the beaten path.
Once we finally got going, the ride was great. We did the 6 hour Bay Ride Tour along the Meguro River, across the Rainbow Bridge, checked out Sengakuji Temple, Tokyo Tower, and even took a ferry ride. He provided great info at various landmarks, kept a nice pace, was always watching to see if we were falling behind, and was just pleasant to ride with.
Really a great way to see Tokyo, especially if you want to do something other than eat, drink, or shop. Highly recommend this tour!
