Arakawa is an old part of Tokyo and worthy of a look as it is different to the more modern parts of the city. Access is easy by train. Yuyake Dandan leads to Yanaka Shopping Street which is narrow with many small stalls and shops and different.

I went Yanaka Ginza twice during my recent trip to Tokyo just to view the scenery from the stairs. There were so many people during morning and not so many during evening. Love taking pictures here.

It's a cool pedestrian street with quiet neighborhoods surrounding. A pleasant walk from Ueno Park. There were no cats at the stairs. There weren't many restaurants open for lunch and we had difficulty to just find a good place for lunch, so I recommend that you know where you want to eat before you go here.

A great half day out,
Has to be the best for a historical street if you love animals. This old fashion street will disappear 1 day, so if arriving in Tokyo this is a must do list.
There are loads to do and eat here.
I went in the morning about 10:30.this is the time when some shops start to open and as you walk around the rest of the shops will open at 11:00.
There are loads of street food to eat.i did not have lunch because I planed to eat street food for lunch.
There are many cats and other animals shops that sells all kind of gifts.
There are 2 animals shops that are for playing with. 1 is a cat cafe and the other is a bird playgrounds. I went to the cat cafe for 30mins. I spent about 3hours on that street.
It is very easy to get to by train. Get off at Nippori station and it's about 5 minis walk.

I went there in winter so I did not see many cats but there are a few shops selling cat merchandise so this is a must-go for cat lovers. The stairs are famed for having plenty of street cats in good weather.

Not really a sight in it's own right, these stairs are the entrance to the Yanaka shopping street. A lovely part of the neighbourhood, you'll walk down these stairs as you go from the train station to the shopping street. There's a nice view down the shopping street from the top of the stairs.

You walk up the top of the steps to see the sunset view. Bring a good sneakers to walk around town. Plenty of food vendors to try different food.

This was a stair way that went down to a more traditional old-style Japan with narrow shopping streets and many old-style shops.Go at the week end when there are markets for more atmosphere. Go up the Goden Zaka Hill from the West Exit at Nippori and at the top you will see the stairs and the different atmosphere below.

Exciting couple of hours spent in this area (before walking to Ueno Park... a great days' activity) shopping, eating, drinking and soaking in the atmosphere. A great spot for cat spotting (and the occasional dogs!); bring your camera and cash!

The staircase leads down into a traditional area with Street food,cafes,bakeries,grocers,fruit,seafood and gift shops. We loved exploring this area and the locals were welcoming. There is a small shrine where you can light a votive candle. A short walk from Nippori station.
