Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

Awesome experience in Yanaka, Tokyo. I didn't think I could actually make my own Japanese sweets! You drink tea from authentic antique cups during the ceremony. You pick the tea cup that matches your personality. Quaint neighborhood, after the ceremony, simply walk the small streets, get lost and find a small shop with a Japanese artist, food vendor etc. and enjoy their craft. Never going to see Matcha tea the same way.

あまり人に教えたくないけど、谷中にある隠れた宝石のような場所です。ここでの素敵な体験や時間は日本人ファンもたくさんいる模様。外国人の方々にも人気です!
This is the real hidden gem in Yanaka. Not just beautiful tea ceremony, Gallery Okubo has amazing teachers who can teach calligraphy and incense tradition as well. Lunch is wonderful and reasonable too. I highly recommended this place if you are looking for authentic cultural experience. Here’s some photos of incense tradition and tea ceremony. Tea ceremony is conducted by master teacher in her 80s on Wed Thurs Sat and Sun. On Friday, lovely Atsuko will be in charge for tea ceremony. The great thing about Gallery Okubo is, they have antique shop as core business and guests can use their precious antique cups which is museum level. For incense tradition, you need to make reservation in advance but it’s really noble experience. You will enjoy the world of mindfulness!

Thank you very much for your valuable evaluation this time. We are glad to introduce a lot of the hidden charm of our shop. I would like to have a real taste of Japanese culture experience through antiques.
We will continue to pursue aiming for shops that anyone can enjoy regardless of nationality.

What a wonderfully peaceful & relaxing experience to calm yourself in the midst of the hustle & bustle of Tokyo.
The tea ceremony was beautiful & precise, delivered with care, respect & honour for tradition and us as guests.
Everything was perfect, from the choice of beautiful priceless antique tea bowls, the delicious sweets, the warmth of the entire family, and the delightful gifts at the end of the ceremony that will become treasured reminders of a wonderful experience.
A must do when visiting Tokyo!

This is not just a tea ceremony, it is also a lesson on preparing a Japanese meal, the history of tea, its preparation, and the utensils, and a time to enjoy with a family of hosts and a few fellow travellers.
Getting there is easy. It is a 5-10 minute walk from the NIPPORI JR train station, hosted in the upstairs of an antique shop.
Machico - our hostess - and her family is involved in the entire process. First, we made (and subsequently consumed) sushi and maki. With a little help from our hostess, they turned out edible. Although my experience as a chef - Japanese or any other cuisine - is very limited, it turns out that even I can prepare a meal "with a little help from my friends". They explained the process to prepare and background of the food that we had for lunch.
Then, onto the tea ceremony. It is in an antique store, and they have enhanced the experience by explaining the history and significance of various (expensive and antique) tea bowls, and permitting each of us to choose one. Then we observed and participated in the tea ceremony. This was followed by seeing documentation about the history of our tea bowls, with lots of explanations and picture-taking.
This takes around 3 hours, but is so interesting that we ran a little long, and somewhat overstayed our welcome. Of course, our hosts were very polite about this.
I cannot imagine a better tea ceremony experience.

I am very grateful to your warm reviews. My shop is not known to many people yet but you can easily imagine how you can experience it. Thank you for making lunch by yourself and enjoying arranging the dishes you made in a full-fledged antique lunch box. Moreover, I am pleased that the tea ceremony was deeply interested in the historical background on tea bowls and them. I am looking forward to seeing you again.
