Neighborhood: Shinjuku
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.

- Molly G7 contributionsThis cooking night with Sato was easily the highlight of our trip while in Tokyo. At this point we had eaten our way through the cities we visited and were really craving a home-cooked meal and Sato (as well as ourselves >:P) really delivered! We couldn't imagine a more perfect menu--we got to make an extremely fresh eggplant salad with a daikon and sesame dressing, a hearty miso soup made with a simple but delicious kombu and shiitake dashi, a rice dish with chopped seasonal vegetables, and hand-made very light crispy gyoza. Everything was so simple but extremely interesting on the palate. Sato walks you through every one of his intentions and it forces you to use all your senses to enjoy the sounds of the cutting crisp vegetables and boiling dashi for example, the inviting sights of the dishes representing things like seasonal colors, the interesting textures like that of the rehydrated shiitake mushrooms or lightly ground sesame, and of course all the complex smells and tastes. And he does this all while being extremely charming, thoughtful, and interested in your own background and life experiences. I cannot recommend his class highly enough, I feel like I struck gold finding this little gem of a cooking class. I have already been recruited to recreate my Sato meal at the family Christmas and I can't wait to come back and take another class on my second trip to Japan :)Thank you so much for your beautiful review!!! I can't thank you enough!!! I had such a wonderful time with you!!! You guys were so amazing and unforgettable guests!!! I really hope that you will come back to my class in the future!!! I was so glad that I could introduce many seasonal ingredients and real home vegetable dishes. I hope you will find all ingredients and cook for your friends and family in the future!!! If you have any questions, pls don't hesitate to ask me anytime!!! You guys are always very welcome!!! Once again, arigatou gozaimasita!!! I still think of you guys!!! Until we meet again, let's keep in touch!!! Take care of yourself!!! - Jacqueline H4 contributionsSato-san's cooking class was an incredible experience! He comes from a long line of chefs and gardeners, so not only is his cooking Michelin star level, but he ensures he cooks with in-season, locally grown ingredients (often what he and his family grow themselves!). We helped prepare the ingredients and he showed us how to put them together, deceivingly simple dishes that taste like something you would never think you could make yourself (but he gives you the recipes, so you actually can). He has funny takes on all kinds of cultures, as he lived in America for awhile and meets people from all over the world. His home is so cozy and it really drives home what Japanese cooking culture is all about. Forget the touristy things to do in Shinjuku and sign up for this class instead, it was my favorite part of our whole trip and you're supporting a really amazing chef (and a really cool dude).Thank you so much for your amazing review!!! I can't thank you enough!!! You guys were so amazing!!! I had such a fantastic time with you!!! We had so many things in common, so I was so relax to cook with you guys!!! Also, you respected Japanese culture and my family history so much!!! It made me super happy!!! I hope you will cook all the dishes for your friends and family back home!!! If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask me anytime!!! You guys are super welcome!!! Once again, arigatou gozaimasita!!! I miss you guys so much already!!! Let's keep in touch until we meet again next time!!! Please stay in Tokyo longer next time!!! Tokyo already loves you so much!!! It is my little advice!!! Take care!!! - Voyager7705265 contributionsOn a mother/daughter trip. It was truly a joy to take darling Sato’s cooking class. He is not only very knowledgeable, he’s also friendly and funny. All the fresh ingredients and the menu is chosen according to what is in season at the time. We learned some history on his family including the fact that his grandfather was a master chef and the family owned restaurants. He certainly knows what he’s doing and you get an authentic delicious meal while you learn Japanese techniques in cooking. Can’t wait for another trip to Japan and Sato’s class will be top on my list.Thank you so much for your beautiful review! I can’t thank you enough!!! - Mark S1 contributionCooking with Sato was such a joy! He was extremely personable, funny, charismatic and very very kind. He made the entire class feel like a collaborative experience and that we weren't just his students, but his little kitchen helpers! Everything we cooked was so delicious and everything came together so easily we were shocked that we had a hand in that. We also had a great time touring with him as well. He is extremely knowledgable in the history of Tokyo and had lots of fun facts and tidbits to share with us. I will gladly recommend his class to everyone I know and any traveler who is interested in learning about Japanese home cooking. We learned so much and we left with our bellies full. Thank you Sato for such an enriching experience. 10000000/10 would recommend. It would be anyone's honor to meet and learn from our wonderful Sato ❤️OMG!!! - Sam R1 contributionWe (Partner and I) met Sato took us into his apartment for an evening of showing us authentic, Japanese home cooking. From starting from the very building blocks up to the finer points and specifics that bring out that flavour anyone who has tried to cook Japanese food without lessons, is probably missing. After 2.5 hours we came away with an understanding of how to begin to really build on our new knowledge into a whole array of dishes once we get home. We were blessed to eat alongside Sato and he shared with us a fascinating insight into his life, cooking and Japanese culture. I really do not think you will get as much out of a 2.5 hour experience anywhere in Tokyo as we did with Sato at Com Burger. His stories, way of teaching and sharing information is gripping from the start and before you know it - you are producing BEAUTIFUL, homemade, authentic Japanese food with (crucially) the understanding (if you are willing to listen and learn) to do it again and explore it further within your own cooking at home. We can't thank Sato enough - an absolutely amazing experience and if we are ever back in Japan, you can be sure to see us again!Thank you so much for your beautiful review!!! I can’t thank you enough!!! You guys were super amazing and respectful guests of comburger history!!! I enjoyed cooking with you so much!!! I really hope that I can meet you again in the future!!! And I hope you will find all ingredients and cook for your friends and family back home!!! When you cook, pls send me pictures:-) If you have questions, pls don’t hesitate to ask me anytime! - Neo V1 contributionWe had heard about his class and how the experience just cooking and sharing an authentic Japanese-style home cooking meal is one-of-a-kind. We decided to give it a try and was lucky to book two spots a week before since Chef Sato’s class is always booked 3 months in advanced. I’m glad we did because not only did we learn about the technical style of cooking, but we also learned alot about the culture and had great conversations all throughout the evening. We really love how Chef Sato’s recommendation on where to go is not some boilerplate stuff everyone can see on social media. It’s tailored to the conversation and we really appreciate the personal touch. 10/10 would recommend this class and go back! If you’re visiting Japan, booking a class at Comburger should be part of your itinerary.Thank you so much for your beautiful words!!! I can’t thank you enough!!! It was so amazing meeting you!!! I’m super sure that this review will bring me a lot of beautiful guests like you guys in the future!!! I was so glad not only you liked my class, but also my recommendations:-) I really hope that I will cook with you guys again in the future!!! But before coming back to my class in the future, I hope you will recreate all dishes for your friends and family back home!!! If you have any questions, pls don’t hesitate to ask me anytime!!! - Sangey LWorld1 contributionSatoru is an friendly and warm host whose cooking class is an excellent showcase of traditional Japanese home cooking. We learnt the importance of cooking with the seasons along with some of the fundamentals to Japanese cooking in his class. Satoru was diligent in explaining each ingredient as they were incorporated, it's purpose in adding flavour, texture, or fragrance to the dish. Teriyaki chicken, rice, nikujaga, with seasonal vegetables and some homemade miso paste. All tied together for a delicious meal we won't soon forget. If you are interested in learning a bit more about Japanese food that won't find at a restaurant, I'd highly recommend Satoru's cooking class. There is something special when the food tastes like home on the other side of the world.Thank you so much for your beautiful review!!! I can’t thank you guys enough!!! I’m so glad you enjoyed my class!!! You guys are amazing!!! I had such a wonderful time with you guys!!! Hope you will recreate all the recipes and entertain for your friends and family back home!!! I’m super sure that they would like the food!!! Ic you have any questions while cooking, pls don’t hesitate to contact me anytime:-) You guys are really welcome!!! - barry533Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania7 contributionsThis cooking class with Sato san was one of the most memorable experiences of our Japan trip. Not only was cooking fun and the food incredibly delicious, it was also great getting to know Sato san. He is a kind and generous soul with so many fun and interesting life stories. Hosting the cooking class in his Shinjuku apartment made the class feel authentically Japanese and was exactly the type of experience I look for when traveling. All of the ingredients used during the course are fresh and locally sourced which made for a deliciously high quality meal that was easy and fun to make. This is a must do activity during your trip to Japan!Omg!!! Thank you so much for your amazing review!!! You guys are totally amazing and unforgettable guests of my cooking class history!!! - Maxime C1 contributionWe had an incredible time at the cooking class with Sato-san in Tokyo. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and excited to dive into the world of Japanese cuisine. Sato-san was not only knowledgeable but also patient and engaging, making the entire experience both educational and fun. The class was a perfect mix of learning new flavors, techniques, and hands-on cooking. Our kids had a blast, and it was so rewarding to see them involved in creating the dishes. The recipes were easy to follow, and we all walked away with new skills and confidence in the kitchen. The best part was sitting down together afterward to enjoy the delicious dishes we had made. It was a memorable experience for our family, and we can't recommend it enough for anyone visiting Tokyo!Thank you so much for your beautiful words!!! I can't thank you guys enough!!! You guys were such an amazing and unforgettable family!!! I had such a wonderful time with you!!! You guys were not only fantastic, but you respected Japanese culture and my family history!!! This class was the first thing I booked once I decided to return to Japan! I have had the pleasure of attending one of Sato-san’s classes 5 years ago and knew I had to return.
This class will be a guaranteed highlight of your Japan trip. Sato-san is a masterful teacher who will graciously share cooking tips as well as explain Japanese ritual and culture. It feels like you are sharing a meal with a friend. The food created in these classes are delicious, hearty, and easy to follow along.
Sato-san, thank you once again for inviting us into your home and sharing your love for food and cooking. We will be back ! :-)

This class was really amazing! I had the chance of booking a recently freed spot a few days before without so much prior research and I could not have imagined better! Satoru san has very easy contact and his will to share, about himself, his culture and of course cooking is great! The setting is intimate and comfortable and i learned a lot, had fun, and ate so well! I had the chance also of sharing the class with a very nice British couple!
All this created a great moment that i will keep with me for long! So far the highlight of my japan trip 😁
Satoru San was also helpful with questions and food / restaurant recommendations.
Do not hesitate and book if this cosy, intimate and personal experience calls to you!

Cooking with Sato was truly one of the highlights of our trip to Tokyo! During our lesson we bonded over our time spent in San Francisco while learning great cooking tips for making the best rice and the seasonality of vegetables in Japan. Finally we sat down to eat an INCREDIBLE katsu curry meal. I will highly recommend this class to anyone interested in learning about Japanese cooking with a fantastic teacher!

We took two cooking classes on our trip through Japan, and Sato's masterclass was by far superior. We would highly recommend it, and we hope one day we will be fortunate enough to travel to Japan again and take one of Sato's classes again. Great care was taken in selecting recipes that changed depending on what was in season. The recipes seem to change frequently, and the food was so good, and the portion sizes were perfect! We really loved the intimate setting of Sato's apartment, and Sato was super friendly. Thanks again for an amazing memory and great recipes to take home!

My partner and I booked this on a whim, without knowing entirely what to expect. We were absolutely floored by what we got: not just an annotated cooking class, but a philosophy on his approach to cooking as well as a delicious, robust meal. Sato himself is generous, charming and extremely knowledgeable. I’d absolutely recommend getting the walking tour add on as well: we went to a lot of places we wouldn’t have found on our own, and he was filled with stories; by the end, he felt like an old buddy. This class was an absolute bargain, and will be the first thing we book when we come back to Japan.

We booked the couple option for dinner and would recommend to all travelers seeking an authentic and personal cooking experience. Sato will share his home with you and show you how his travels and family history have shaped his cooking and ingredients - which are delicious! Sato has many repeat customers, including Michelin chefs seeking to learn from Japanese cuisine, and we could see why. Book as soon as you can and be on time!

My sister and I took Sato's cooking class on our first full day in Tokyo and it was our favorite night of the entire trip! Sato welcomed us into his home and showed us many aspects of Japanese cooking and taught us how to cook several dishes -- our favorite was the chicken karaage! The class is very informative and you get to participate in every step of the cooking process for each food you make with him, and he sends you home with the recipes so you can recreate it yourself. Sato is also an amazing storyteller and we learned a lot about his life growing up. He also gave us lots of recommendations for where to eat and what to do while we were in Japan, and he took lots of photos of us cooking that we could send to our families and friends. Thank you Sato!!

This was the second time I've taken a private cooking class with Sato-San in Shinjuku. Like last time, he picked us up on time at the easy-to-find meeting point near the station. He then took us to his small but beautifully and lovingly decorated apartment. There we prepared an absolutely delicious meal with countless toppings and fresh, homemade gyoza. Sato's classes are characterized by his great attention to detail, the beautiful presentation of the food and the table, and the many additional details and information about Japan.
The host himself is very artistic, educated and polite and you feel absolutely at home with him from the start. I can highly recommend the classes with Sato, a unique and simply beautiful experience. Thank you very much and see you next time!

What is the menu of a typical cooking class? My daughter would like to prepare ramen and Gyoza.

Thank you so much for your inquiry. Typical menu? You mean standard menu?
From Sunday to Tuesday, we cook rice, miso soup, main dish and one or 2 side dishes.
From Wednesday to Friday, we cook Japanese popular and heavy menus such as Gyoza/ramen, karaage, okonomiyaki and so on, so your daughter maybe wants to come between Wednesday to Friday.
If you have any questions, please check my official website and mail me directly!
Thanks
