The area
Address
Neighborhood: Shinjuku
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.

    It’s Godzilla
Coming back to Shinjuku during June I finally found the time to go see Godzilla. Our view unfortunately was just from the street level. I read that one could get up close by entering through Hotel Gracery and go up to the reception. Godzilla is just outside on the balcony. However since we had to make sure we fell in line early at our sushi restaurant, we were not able to view the show (roars and smoke) which happens every hour from noon until 8pm. Still a novel site to see in Shinjuku.

    Overrated
Overrated. People who like the overwhelming stimulus of hundreds of flashing electronic billboards, noise, and a Godzilla head in a loud crowded city area will love it. Picture Times Square on steroids.

Fun Landmark if You’re in the Area
We were out in Shinjuku, navigating the crowds, actually looking for Golden Gai when we turned the corner and there he was hovering above us, Godzilla or Gojira as he is known in Japan. I I was just joking with my wife an hour before I heard Godzilla was somewhere around so it was fun to just run into him. We didn’t visit the hotel or anything but a fun landmark if you’re in the are, not something I would plan on as an activity.

This street is in Kabukicho.
Suddenly, I heard Godzilla's voice as I was walking down this path.
Looking up at what happened, I saw Godzilla's head over the building.
Maybe Godzilla's head appears regularly.
What a wonderful event!

Had I not been with someone, I would not have noticed this head popping out from above! Pretty cool. Your likely to visit the area, so have a look. Don't make a special trip unless your a fan! Located near the entrance of Shinjuku TOHO Building of Shinjuku, Kabukicho. I saw it in the day but I hear that it's better to see at night. Apparently it roars on the hour between noon and 20:00.

I expected a bit more just based on my research on the Shinjuku area. I saw the Godzilla head many times and it was fun at first but I never really paid attention to it afterwards. It might be because Covid, but I never saw any show or anything. I guess I expected a bit more, it was just underwhelming. Either way, see it once if in the area, but it is not a must see.

Godzilla is located in an adult oriented area of Shinjukyu. On a periodic basis, you will hear loud noises and see smoke and lights coming from Godzilla's mouth. As a fan of Godzilla growing up this was a must see attraction for me during my Toyko visit.

We have two boys 11 and 13 who really wanted to see the Godzilla sites while in Tokyo, so after they were very disappointed about the size of the statue in Gadzilla square the Godzilla head in Shinjuku became a must. The view from the street is ok, but we learned the trick from a very helpful young lady in the lobby of the cinema below the head. She said quietly to take the elevator to the 8th floor for the lobby of the Gracery Hotel, supposed to only be for hotel guest but we were quite as we strolled over to the exterior deck that housed the huge replica and were able to get some amazing pictures. A big thanks to that young lady for the advice, it made our boys trip and hopefully helps you too!

This was at the hotel we stayed in (hotel Gracery). We popped out to see it on the roof top a few times during our visit and caught it roaring twice, complete with steam and lazers. Well worth a look - you can't really miss it if you're in the Shinjuku area!

On our last day in Japan we wanted to See Godzilla. Admission is FREE. From our accommodation The Keio plaza Hotel we walked 10mins to Shinjuku Station. From there We walked another 10mins to Hotel Cracery & spotted Godzilla on the roof. We went through under the Cinema complex to the ground level floor Elevator of Hotel Gracery. It is Clearly signed for directions. We took the Elevator up to 9th floor.Once there you walk out onto the outside Deck where you are greeting with a huge Godzilla Head & Claw. We got there right on the hour so get to hear Godzilla Roaring, eyes flashing Red & steam coming out of his mouth, At night it shows red laser beams coming out of his mouth. Show is on every hour from 12pm-12am & goes for about 3minutes. I would Highly recommend.

The Godzilla Head is on the top of the Gracery Hotel/Toho cinema building. You will be able to hear it roar plus some smoke and lasers around it’s eyes/mouth every hour.

It’s a nice fixture around that area and a cool photo op.

First of all it’s free! You can get your selfie with the King of Monsters up close - yes within a few feet! Don’t just look at him from the bottom of the building or from afar - you need to go up where he is, it won’t take long and it will be worth your while. Just go to the Hotel Gracery, you can’t miss it since he is peeking over the building, take the elevator to the 8th floor. When you exit the elevator you will pass through a hallway (plastered with posters of every Japanese Godzilla movie that ever existed) and to the hotel lounge area. Exit the lounge to the balcony and there he is. When we went, it was not crowded at all and we just took our time to get our selfies with Godzilla. He also roars at the top of every hour from 12 pm to 8 pm.

A must for all Godzilla fans especially the hallway with a poster of every Japanese Godzilla movies (sorry no Hollywood made ones) including the recent animated ones. The lobby also has a smaller model of Godzilla.

Finally a tip for parents with young children. Godzilla’s head is located in Kabukicho which is the red light district of Shinjuku. Just be aware that there are shops and businesses that offers products that are inappropriate for them. Do visit Godzilla but you might not want to wander into the darker alleys.
