Neighborhood: Shinagawa / Gotanda
In Shinagawa, an office district shares space with luxury residential buildings and the scene is constantly changing with rapid development. Ikedayama park and Togoshi park are great places to see beautiful traditional Japanese gardens with ponds, as well as enjoy the changing seasons. Shinagawa was a post and a port town during the Edo era and the lavish old Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples at Shinagawa and Ebara are very popular. It's a great place to get in touch with the old Edo atmosphere on a pleasure boat cruising along the canal. The neighboring area around Gotanda station is a study in modern contrasts filled with unique restaurants and a lively nightlife.

Happo-en Garden is hidden in Tokyo and many tourists would not even know it exists. The phrase, Happo-en, means garden of eight views and describes the beauty of the garden that can be enjoyed from all angles. Happo-en garden has preserved the beauty of Japan through the centuries and maintains its historical buildings. All the buildings and nature such as hills and streams intertwine and create a perfect balance of old and new.
The garden of eight views is beautiful from any angle. It also has beauty in every season because of the careful attention of the gardeners. You can see sakura in the spring or the autumn colors of the maples in the fall. The garden never loses its charm. The fact remains that this garden is a delight for the senses.

We went to this beautiful garden to have a japanese tea ceremony. I'm so glad we did! I had read that a tea ceremony could be really expensive in Japan but this was not. It costed about 4000 yen for me and my daughter and was worth every yen! We booked in advance and when we arrived at the entrance we where greated by a man who asked if I was Eva K . I still can't figure out how he could know, since we certainly not where the only people there! He guided us to the main building and once again we where greated by an other man that followed us to the little traditional house where the ceremony would take place. There a woman in kimono greated us and explained the rituals for the ceremony. Then she prepared the tea. She had been training 10 years to perform this ritual and is was indeed a performance! You had to take the bowl with your right hand and put it on your left palm and hold it on the side with your right hand! Raise it to show appreciation and admire the picture on the bowl and like this it went on for almost an hour. We got little sweets to have with our tea to balance the bitterness of it!
After the tea ceromony we had a walk in the beautiful garden with a koi pond and bonsai trees. It felt like we went back in time and we had the most wonderful time there. We even saw a japanese wedding couple . If not having the tea ceremony the entrance to the garden is free.

I've lived in Tokyo for eight years and only came across this gem of a garden last week. I booked a short tea ceremony trial for my aunt who was visiting from the US.
The traditional Japanese garden and koi pond were stunning, even though it was still too early for the cherry blossoms.
You can easily forget that you're in the middle of Tokyo and just spend time strolling around or sitting quietly on the benches.
There's a small tea house where you can try a short tea ceremony seated on benches, not in a tatami room. You need to make reservations. The lady conducting the tea ceremony speaks only a little English, but she will give you a piece of paper explaining what to do for the tea ceremony trial, which lasts about 20 minutes.

Like what Debra M reviewed, this is really a beautiful high end dining and relaxation venue
I will focus more on its tea ceremony at its old teahouse Muan in the garden of 8 views(Happo en)
Someone in charge of the ceremony will do the demo for you(although English is not her strength, she did her very best to explain -with notes given, and tried to be humorous)
After the ceremony u r free to take photos or stroll around in the beautiful garden

The traditional tea ceremony was interesting, but I wish there was a guide to explain all the movements, all the reasons why each movement takes place. The Garden is so pretty. If you're lucky enough to go there when not busy with chatty tourists, it will give you such a feeling of inner peace. It's just lovely.

We were introduced to this garden just before dusk by a friend who lives close by.
Amazed by this beautiful little sanctuary in the middle of the city - just lovely! The pea shingle paths, trees and lake provide a very peaceful space. Love love love the bonsai trees, all very mature but one 525yrs old (many others over 100yrs)! Quite humbling to see.
The site also offers tea ceremonies and acts as a wedding venue.
We'll have to come back to experience the tea ceremony - this is exactly the sort of environment in which I'd like to take part in one.

This garden was located right behind our hotel, so were fortunate to walk around. There were 3 weddings going on - a very important day for weddings... so we were not able to get everywhere but we saw enough that we will go back again. There are bonsai trees on display, tea houses and don't miss the koi pond where if you stand in a certain spot, and clap your hands the fish will come to eat!

Happoen Koen (Gardens) is one of the best in Tokyo. Located in the Shirogane/Takanawa neighborhoods, it is fantastic. Highly recommend year round, but is at its peak in the Fall colors or in April during Sakura (Cherry Blossoms). Small charge to enter.

Happoen Garden is near a train station, so you won't have to walk very far. The day I visited, there was a wedding going on and my friend and I thought we were at the wrong place. My friend and I must have looked puzzled because one of the very polite staff members came up to us and said to us in English that if we were looking for Happoen, we were in the right place. He then walked us to the entrance, gave us a brochure about the garden and explained what we would see once we walked past the gates. My favorite part of Happoen Garden was the many beautiful koi fish that are swimming around. I can see why this place is popular for weddings. There are many gorgeous waterfalls that make beautiful backdrops for photos. I was looking forward to the tea ceremony, but I think it was cancelled due to the wedding that was taking place. I was a little disappointed about that, but other than that I enjoyed my time at Happoen.

We stopped here on our Hato Bus tour. It is a small oasis of green amongst the grey buildings. It is a very pretty formal garden with a fish filled lake surrounded by colourful maples, a collection of very old Bonsai trees, temples, and a wedding chapel. It is very popular with couples having their wedding photos taken, particularly if you go on a Saturday. In the far corner is a small building where we watched women in Geisha costume perform a lovely tea ceremony. A really lovely spot.

Hi,
I tried to make a reservation through the contact me at your website, but it won't let me submit by constantly giving me "referer check error" even after I filled out all compulsory fields. And no email was found to send my request directly to.
Please help me make a reservation.
Thanks,
Yiya

Unsure why the contact us page does not work. I found an email address by looking at various Happo-en sites and one relating to banquest is available but it cannot be included as TA does no allow email addresses or web sites. in answers. Best bet is to call on 03 3443 3775 or outside Japan use 81 and drop the zero.

Hello, I would like to know what days and times are available for tea ceremonies.
Thank you.

Best way to find out is use their Contact Us facility or call them as you will get someone who can speak English. Looking at their web site they require two months advance notice.

Hello,
I was wondering if I could book the tatami tea ceremony for 4 friends in April. I'm afraid I don't speak Japanese so I won't understand over the phone.
Thank you
