Neighborhood: Odaiba / Shiodome / Shinbashi
Odaiba is an entertainment hotspot with a giant ferris wheel, concert halls, amusement arcades and lots of shopping. It also boasts Oedo-onsen-monogatari, a hotspring that recreates old Edo-era ambiance and is very popular with foreign visitors. Shiodome has ultra-modern office buildings where you can often find restaurants with a great high-rise view of Tokyo. The neighboring area of Shinbashi is a district of much older commercial buildings and it's a great place to join 'salary men' enjoying a drink and snacks at street stalls under the railway bridges after work.

A lot of reviews complaining what this shop isn't. Not as big as others. No tax free products (why would there be??). Continued gripe.
My feel is take it for what it is..a Tamiya shop in its home country. It's like the holy grail for modellers. Just step foot into Tamiya shop in Tokyo. How cool is that?
I didn't really find anything to buy as I have nearly everything but I still enjoyed my time there tremendously. Just looking at shelf's, at all the items, willing myself to find something to buy! If you take it as such, you will have a good time. If you go in expecting the world, tax free items, cheaper than your own country items, then you will be disappointed. Just enjoy yourself. Tamiya shop in Tokyo. For any modeller...how cool is that.

If you are a beginner to modeling, this is the perfect place to start buying what you need to start modeling. This place offers many of Tamiya’s models and not much of tee-shirts. The staff that was in charge during my first visit was very kind and helpful but during our second visit the staff wasn’t very kind and helpful. And if you go there during it’s Shimbashi 10th anniversary (it is already over for this year) we got a Tamiya 10th anniversary Shimbashi folder. This place is very worth visiting. And by the way this place doesn’t offer tax free service.

I confess - I spent a lot of my youth building Tamiya models, so took the opportunity to visit their store / display centre in Shimbashi,
Unfortunately, after seeing bigger hobby stores in Akihabara I was rather underwhelmed by it. Yes, there were some kits I would have loved to take home, but they weren't all that much cheaper than other shops.
If you're a die-hard Tamiya fan-boy, then go for it, Otherwise, there are better shops around.

Other than Tamiya headquarters in Shizuoka, this store was high on my list of must-see places on my Japanese trip, due to my childhood (and adulthood) need to keep buying their stuff. My only limiting factor was my small luggage. Otherwise, you can spend a lot. If you have an active JR pass, you can ride the Yamanote line for free to the Shimbashi station noted in the directions on the Tamiya website. Google maps came in handy for me since I went at night. There are also several cheap eateries and shops in the neighborhood, so it was fun spending time off the usual Tokyo tourist traps. It was worth it, especially if you're a Tamiya fan or just into plastic models.

I made a special trip to find the shop, expecting that they would have a comprehensive selection of Tamiya kits. The selection was good, but not especially wide. The Singapore agent Stargek has a bigger shop. When tax is added, the saving over buying in Singapore is not that much. It would be different if they offered tax free services for tourists.

I took the time to visit the Tamiya store on a recent visit to Tokyo and it was well worth it. Though Tamiya models can be purchased anywhere, there was something about visiting this store that brought back fond memories of making models in my youth while living in Japan. The store is easy to locate and in a decent area where you can stop for a bite or a coffee. I enjoyed the layout of the shop, looking over the models they had for sale and the dioramas on display. I was able to pick up a shirt and some stickers as souvenirs. This was a worthy visit and something a model enthusiast would enjoy.

As a fan of models this destination couldn't be put aside! This is the "official" store of tamiya, one of the leaders of the plastic model industry. It also looks like a museum. Please give a look there even if this hobby isn't yours! Five minutes are enough to have an enjoyable time there!

I grew up with Tamiya, and I still build their stuff, and I wanted to visit the Head Quarters in Shizuoka, which I did as a life long ambition, and to then visit the shop was just fantastic. Its so clean, as you would expect!, a fantastic range of stuff, and also all the things you just cant get back in the UK. On our next trip, we are staying in the area so I can visit more often.
A truly wonderful place for model and RC fans. Plus lots of Tamiya merchandise, like stickers and T shirts.

Do they sell Tamiya 1/16 RC tanks and how much does each cost? ( tiger 1 item 56009) Thanks.
Are models cheaper here than what you'd pay for them in the US?? I'm heading there tomorrow and am curious if it's worth it to pick up models at the discounted rate.

I did notice that there military 1/35 scale models had some price differences than what is available in the states. I would not consider them a 'discount' price nor was the price incredibly different. I mainly looked at the tanks and WW2 soldiers.
From all the model kits to tools and paint, the price range are cheaper than Akihabara?

I am not sure about that however I really did not see any Tamiya stuff in Akihabara and the Tamiya shop is just lovely
