This temple is pretty much a very small place located in the city area and is very easy to access by bus. The area is highlighted by the red and gold pagoda and a shrine of worship next to it. The place also housed the biggest wooden buddha and it truly amazing. Visit this area to add to your list to visit in Hakata area.

Few hundred meters from Kushina Shrine there is the Tochoji Temple, also one of the oldest temples. The red pagoda is truly impressive as well as the Buddha black pine statue inside the temple. The gardens serve as an amazing relaxing and tranquil place away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Visited Tochiji Temple and the mochi place right next door during our past visit to Japan. The five-story pagoda is impressive and a must to photograph while here. The huge wooden buddha is amazing and the short hell to heaven walk behind the buddha was fun.

The temple complex is very interesting with some great photographic opportunities.
We were the during cherry blossom season and the ancient cherry blossom tree was in full bloom, it was stunning.
Inside the temple is a huge wooden Buddha.

Huge Buddha carved from cypress from Taiwan. The tunnel.underneath is supposed to simulate the journey through hell. It is a quirky experience. The ground is small and you can spend 15 minutes here. There is a nice rice cracker shop just outside it's door.

This was part of my Fukuoka Walking Tour when I was there. The guide take us there to show us the largest wooden seating Buddha in Fukuoka at Tochoji Temple.
Outside the ground area, a designated cultural property , stood a glimming five story pagoda besides the temple. We went in to the temple and up the stairways. At the top of this floor, there was an attendant. We each made a donation and lit up an incense for good luck.
After that we went to the front and view the large wooden Buddha. For that short moment, we felt small in comparison to this sitting Buddha. An awesome sight one will not forgot.
We were also apprised if we have courage to walk through a pathway of darkness and out the way to light. Through the darken path one must feel the hand rail while seeing images of hell. Faint heart should not try this darkness walk.
Afterward we left the temple, and continued out neighborhood walk in the area on to a museum and other temple.

If you are in Fukuoka you must visit this temple and the nearby Kushida shrine, that are only a few minutes away from Hakata station. Under the great wooden Budda there is an interesting passageway that presents some dioramas of the different hells in Buddism.

Yeah, it was a bit of a bizarre experience coming here today. Started off pretty normal. I went around the grounds and snapped some pictures of the various structures. This place is famous for its red multitower pagoda which is seriously beautiful. The tombs in the back are pretty awesome as well. Went upstairs to see the large Buddha. Then I went to the back of the Buddha and actually into and through it in a pitch-black passageway of sorts. Never done that before. As I'm about to leave and chanting my final prayers to the Buddha, a foreign film crew noisily comes in and starts setting up. I guess it was the director who asked me a few questions and also asked me to wait around to be interviewed. I agreed. Turns out the star of this TV program they're filming is a guy named Paddy Doherty (who I never heard of before). I chatted with him a bit. Looking him up on my cell phone, he was a bare-knuckles fighter and appeared in a few movies including "My Fat Greek Wedding." Anyway, I said I would wait. While I was sitting watching them film, this Japanese woman comes up and asks me if I'm having any pain. She told me she had these special powers and was able to give me relief. I asked her if she belongs to some Buddhist denomination or something and she told me she had no religion. She laughed when I told her Yoko Ono didn't either. She started holding her hands over my back and stomach. We were chatting and she asked me if I was from Florida, which blew my mind because that is where I grew up for the most part. Actually after she finished and started doing her thing with other people, I waited for her to finish with them so she could use her powers on me again as I was all tripped out over the Florida thing. Anyway that director was all insincerely apologetic when he told me that they didn't need me after I waited for them. I really didn't care because I got that sketchy healing power from the lady. Oh yeah, there's signs saying you can't take pictures of that big Buddha but they were filming in there and snapping pictures themselves so I took one. I'm going to share it with you. Oh yeah! I'm pretty down with this temple.

If you like Japanese architecture and Temple design, this is a must-visit spot for you. Besides a large Buddha Statue, a beautiful red Pagoda, and a gorgeous temple, you can also experience a trip between hell and heaven.
