This city is very important to Ancient Japan. In fact, it is one of the oldest kingdoms before Japan united. They had the first contact with China. The whole history of Fukuoka (formerly called Hakata) is there including about the invasion of Khan's army and...More

A nice museum close to Fukuoka tower. Worth taking a look inside if you already are in the area. The permanent exhibition is nice.

I spent about 3 hours here and it was great. Each Japanese time period is covered from Jomon to the present. Only thing I didn't like was, "no photos", and limited English information. I think there is English audio but didn't know this until I...More

The museum was a bit out of the way for me, but well worth the time and effort to get there. The building appears disappointing, a misguided design from the 1970s or 1980s, but what truly matters is the exhibits. The exhibits and textual descriptions...More

Definitely worthwhile for the Fukuoka-Hakata historical context. Many fascinating exhibits from pre-history to modern times. If you like to enhance your vacations with more background information, you will really enjoy this museum. Renting the audio is a must for non-Japanese speakers.

Ticket at 200 yen (~S $2.50) : For normal exhibition. Spent an hour in the museum. A very brief history of Fukuoka and the golden seal. Personally, I felt that the museum is a bit not very English friendly. Additional 300 yen for English audio...More

The Fukuoka City Museum opened its doors in 1990. It was built during the economic bubble in Japan (1986 to 1991) at a vast land reclamation called Momochi-hama (Momochi-Beach). So it has very spacious surroundings documenting the high spirits of those years. As present-day Fukuoka...More

If you still have time after having visited all the major shrines, and on a rainy day (where a visit to gardens would not be recommended), this museum would be a good Plan D or E. It provides an interesting account of Fukuoka's history. Located...More

Awesome exhibition, very informative, doesn't cost much. Goes into detail about the history of the Kyushu island and its place in Japan.

Hi 324Travel, I didn't see that in the brochure when I was there. And didn't see anyone trying one on either... Sorry that I can't be of further assistance. Perhaps you could drop them an email?
