Roll up Roll up ... see animals for your entertainment in Victorian era conditions
Nov 2019
If you were wondering where all those old Victorian "bird cage" style zoo enclosures had gone from your country, there right here at Nogeyama Zoo in Yokohama, Japan. The higher vertebrates in particular don't fair well. The chimpanzees and lions are seriously depressed (and rightly so) for being caged up in conditions that should never be seen in the 21st century.
It may be free to enter but this zootainment is anything but harmless for those poor creatures who have been put on exhibit. Even the smaller red panda walks aimless in his own shadow back and forth across a horizontal log near the entrance.
Perhaps use your visit to show how children how animals should never be kept and confront the local Japanese to consider their morals.

A Fun and FREE Zoo!
Dec 2018
You can't beat seeing animals for free. Yes, absolutely free. Granted, we arrived just slightly before closing (we lost our way), but there was still much to see - giraffes, a lion, a tiger, alligators, monkeys, penguins ... if you have the time, PLEASE go check this place out, because animals are great and ... it's FREE!

Worthwhile free zoo
May 2018 • Couples
Opened in 1951, this free zoo is home to over 1,400 animals of 100 different species in a 24 acre hillside park.
A one km walk ( although up the hill ) from the Sakuragicho train station, it is in the centre of Minatomirai. Exceeding our expectations we enjoyed our visit. The most popular animal is the red panda, but there are also giraffe, camel, zebra, bears, tigers, lion, penguins, wallaby, baboons, monkeys, reptiles and much more. There is a wonderful petting zoo where children interact with and learn about guinea pigs, mice, and chickens. A small food court and picnic area is available.

Note it is closed on Mondays.

A small intimate zoo
Apr 2018 • Family
About 1km from Sakuragicho station, uphill walk as the zoo is located on the top of a hill. We caught a taxi from Yokohama harbour which cost 780yen as the weather was not very good. It's a city zoo which is quite small but it seemed well run with the animals looking clean and happy. You can get very up close with some animals as the enclosures are not big. The petting zoo was the highlight for my daughter where they rotated groups of Guinea pigs for children to hold. I noticed that as we spent over 20mins there!! Admission was free so it was a good excuse for mums and dads to buy something for your kids in the zoo shop to support the zoo :)

Nice free zoo, cute red panda and chance to interact with guine pig and mouse
Nov 2017 • Solo
This is a free zoo with not so many animal but still ok for me. One of most famous one here is red panda, they really cute but it depend on your luck cause sometime they're sleeping and you don't have much chance to see them play with each other.

Another plus point for this zoo is free chance to interact with guine pig and small lab mouse. Each session is about 40 minutes. They will conduct a session to show you how to handle with them first (in Japanese, I don't know if English version is available but I think it's not). Please make sure you understand this well because this is important for your kid and yourself safety when get in here

When enter you can freely choose any guine pig, chicken you want to pet and have a nice time with them. The lab mouse is my favorite one, they are not to pet but to play with. They love to climb so be careful when you go with your children because they may panic when mouse climb on their head and not knowing how to handle the mouse; this can cause harm to both your kid and the mouse so just keep your eyes on them. Another caution is after play with the lab mouse your cloth maybe smell a little bit.

The zoo have small food court area and small picnic area, quite family friendly in my opinion. At the end it's not a big zoo but I love it.

Cute red panda
Aug 2017 • Family
We loved the zoo and it is totally for free. Really great is apart from the red pandas also the petting zoo!!
Only minus is the really small area that is there for the lion and the tiger, it made me a little bit sad.

Nice size zoo free of charge
Aug 2017 • Family
It is rather small size zoo. But, for my 3 years old daughter, it is enough size to spend 3 hours with typical animals.
Be careful, it is after long slope. I walked up there from Sakuragicho station though, maybe, it is better to use a taxi from the station or from Hinodecho station.

Don't expect a big zoo
Sep 2016 • Couples
For an outing with a child or to kill a couple of hours. A bit far on foot from the nearest station. Just ok.
