My Chinese colleagues call this Furong Old Town, and formerly officially known by the name Wangcun Village. A 2,000 year old town with a 60-metre in height waterfall, and named after the Hibiscus flower.

Came here from Fenghuang on a rainy day. It has far fewer tourists than that town and is much quieter. About half the shops were shut. Having said that I don't understand why because this town is absolutely beautiful. It's a 2000 year old town built around waterfalls and looks magical. I spent around 1.5 hours walking around and under the waterfalls but wouldn't have minded staying longer. The famous rice tofu is delicious. For those visiting Fenghuang I would highly recommend it.

This ancient town is almost frozen in time. Much of this town changes very little between decades; in some cases, they have changed very little over the past 2,000 years.

Was surprised how dead the town was. Rice Tofu - nothing special (RMB 3.00).
Someone from our tour group asked a local why was the town so quiet. He told us that since they started charging an entrance fee, people stopped coming. In addition, the one location to take photos of the waterfall, there is a charge if you what to take photos of RMB 2.00 per person who wants to take a picture of the waterfall. Greed is destroying these villages.
Not worth the cost of RMB 30.00 or the time needed to travel to the town.

I found the town (also known as Furong) to be beautiful and unique, built around waterfalls, with old buildings, narrow streets decorated with red lanterns and countless little shops and stalls selling all kind of things, small restaurants and beautiful, photogenic views, pretty much wherever you turn to. I loved it and I think it's a place not to be missed.

My group tour stopped there while travelling from Fenghuang ancient city to Zhangjiajie. The original name of the town was "Wangcun" or something like that but became known as "Hibiscus Town" or "Furong" after a 1960s or 70s movie which featured it. The old part on a slope with its old buildings, streets and antiques shops are well worth a visit. The main attraction is its waterfall but there wasn't much water when we were there and the guide did not give us time to cross over to the other side for a better look, which was a great pity. The place is certainly very picturesque with countless photo opportunities; it is less crowded and commercialized compared to Fenghuang.

An small old town which is not so crowed. The town has waterfall in the center of the town.
From Zhangjiajie, we took a bus from bus terminal directly to this town. (30 yuan) Then, take a yellow minivan to the entrance. (1 yuan)
We arrived at the entrance gate around 6 PM. The ticket office was closed. So, we entered this town without paying anything.
We stayed in guesthouse for 1 night. So, we can enjoy waterfall view both day and night.

This is an old town, which is not as popular (yet) as Fenghuang or Lijiang. It's smaller and there's not much to do except to tour a tiny area around the waterfall, with preserved old buildings on both sides of the river, an old bridge and an interesting, under the waterfall walkway. Apparently the place was famous in 80s when a few Chinese movies were shot depicting old style. The entrance is 120CNY, which is almost as much as the ticket to Fenghuang. Still, worth a stop for a few hours on your way - pretty place and not as choke full of tourists as other old towns in China

Xiangxi Hibiscus Town also called Furong Town, which got its name from a Chinese movie directed by Jangwen. I did a tour to this town from Fenghuang via Jishou by bus. The highlight of this town is the waterfall and the old buildings. But the ticket is too expensive.
Anyway, it leaved me a good memory.

On first glance I thought we would be wasting our time in a tourist trap village. Mind you, there are vendors and you're supposed to try the tofu dish from the famous movie (1986). But just strolling around you get a view of a way of life that is fading. Old ladies still laze under quilts,
toddlers still run around or are breastfed publicly and locals carry baskets on their backs, full of local goods including just caught fish from the lake. It's also scenic with lovely views of the waterfalls from different vantage points of town. Charming in a low key way; it's already starting to change so see it now.

Hi, I am planning my trip to China (going next spring). I was curious where one should stay if they want to visit Xiangxi Hibiscus Town. Is it best to stay in the larger town nearby? I would love to stay near the waterfall but wasn't sure if that's an option for non-locals!
Thanks!

Hello,
I would like to ask you if there is a direct bus
from Furong to Fenghuang, and how much does it cost?
Do we need make a reservation for this bus?
Is it possible to make the reservation or buy the tickets 2 days before from Zhangjiajie? since we will be staying in FurongZhen only for one night.
Thank you.
