They are welcoming to visitors, especially those who bring bananas, which can be purchased from normal-looking humans at the edge of the forest. The forest environment is clearly respected and kept tidy; trash cans are stationed along the trails. This place is well worth a stop if you’re in the region.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 8, 2024

This unknown (to me) place was a nice surprise and a pleasant visit to a sanctuary of nature.
I felt excited walking into the jungle and contacting very nice monkeys, ready to familiarize with human beings, provided you supply them some bananas.
A young guide is taking you along the path; you can choose a short visit or a long visit depending on your plans.
Also with a short visit you can enjoy the wonders of nature.

This was a fun and informative excursion. The beautiful and inquisitive mona monkeys had their watchful eyes on us before we ever got into their sanctuary. Our guide gave us his knowledge of the group. He also gave us bananas to feed to them; they gently jumped onto our outstretched arm and got their prize.

During our trip to Ghana in October 2015, we visited the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary. It's a neat eco-tourism place that is open to those visitors who would like to come and see the monkeys... but we chose to book the full meal deal: accommodations, meals, drumming and dancing at night, a visit to the forest to feed the monkeys in the morning, followed by a storytelling time with a local elder.
Visiting the monkeys was amazing (I'll post those pictures in a separate review), but listening to the elder from the village was truly something special. He was blind and walked with a cane, but was clearly highly respected by the adults and children from the village.
He started our time together with a prayer and a blessing (pouring some palm spirits on the dirt to thank the ancestors), then shared three stories with us. Having studied Aesops Fables with my kids the last few years, it was interesting to note the similarities between his stories and the fables that are familiar to us.
Although not "part of the tour", we were often accompanied by a little pack of village children during our time in Tafi Atome. Had we left it up to our kids, we would've stayed an extra day just to play.
It really was a wonderful experience to include in our trip to Ghana. One that we'll never forget.
Also, vines as swings!

These monkey life a small forest next to village. If you buy food from the villagers, e.g. bananas, they will jump on you and take the banana. An exciting experience. You will have to pay, even if you stay at the main road.

For me it was one of the biggest highlights of my trip to Ghana. I had great fun feeding, touching and observing monkey family. They are friendly and beautiful. Our guide made plenty of photos and videos of me and my boyfriend with my iphone, which was really cool. Although I have to admit: going there can be very expensive – a hotel in Wli, where I've stayed, organized transport for 300CDs. Going to Tafi Atome with trotros would be cheaper but rather complicated. Monkey Sanctuary's staff tried to cheat us to pay 50CDs each, which was double the official price, so be careful!

Although it is fun to be up close and personal with monkey's. It is damaging for the animals and they become completely dependant on the banana's they get from the visitors. PLEASE stop this, protect your wildlife not spoil and monetise it!

Visited the mona monkeys of the Tafi Monkey Sanctuary in the Volt Region. The monkeys were in their natural habitat, friendly and harmless. With a little fee and banana you get to enjoy a wonderful time.

Hi, we are heading to Ghana in September and would like to make a trip out to see the Monkeys from Hohoe. Is it easy to get transport back to Hohoe, i.e. Tro-tros available at the sanctuary? And what is the admission fee at the Sanctuary, does it include the guide?
Thanks. We are so looking forward to going over

There are at least motorcycles out of the village to the main road. There are trotros sometimes. It is only a one hour walk (5k). Once you are back on the main road it is very easy to get back to Hohoe.
Price includes guide. I can't remember the price but it is reasonable. You may want to bring some bananas with you to be sure that you have some.
My recommendation is to spend the night. It's a much better monkey experience and it's a great village experience.

Hi I travelled from Ho to Accra in November (bridge and ferry issues already applied). From Ho to the sanctuary by private car, I would say it takes 45 mins (there are big roadworks so it might have gotten a lot better or on the contrary dramatically worsened since). From Ho to Accra by trotro it took me about 5 or 6 hours if you count the wait in the morning at Ho for the tro tro to leave.
if you're question was, "can I make it a 1-day-trip from Accra?", then the answer is no. But Volta is lovely and there are a few things to see around Ho so it's worth the trip.
