Getting here from Kunming is not easy and should be undertaken when the conditions are optimal for the experience to be generally worth the time and trouble. I was there last week and most of the terraced fields had water, which made them quite photogenic.
I've been here before, in January, and they are very pretty then as well, but the weather is cold. This time it was much more pleasant.
If you don't have your own car, you need a local driver to take you around to the various view points. Some are better for sunrise, such as Duoyishu 多衣树, and others are better for sunset, such as Bada 坝达 and Laohuzui 老虎嘴.
When you pay your 100 Yuan admission fee on first entering the area, they will give you a good local map.
Important to realize that Yuanyang 元阳 is not just one single place. It's a region that is somewhat spread out along part of a mountain range. Need to allow a couple nights here so you can adapt to its peacefulness and get the feel of the place.
Also important to know that you might not get perfect viewing weather. Many of these spots are above the clouds and they can obscure the view if the winds are not right. So don't cut it too close. Allow time for driving around.
The terraced fields are not the only attraction. If you come on a weekend, you can attend a Sunday morning market in one of the villages. People come down from the remote hamlets to buy and sell, and it gets quite colorful because of the variety of minority costumes.

Yuanyang Rice Terraces are a Hani ethnic minority’s masterpiece of ingenuity. In unique shapes and sizes with more than thousand years of history and 1000 and 2000 metres above sea level, they are a mosiac of colourful and breathtaking landscape of natural beauty. A UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, the 3 Must-See scenic areas are Duoyishu at sunrise, Bada in the day and Laohuzui (the Tiger Mouth) at sunset. For a vintage point of the magnificent view of shimmering gold, silver, black, brown and green, a 2-hour lead time and a camera tripod are important!

Our company tour was four-days. 2nd and 3rd days were assigned to see the terrace. On and return travel time was 5H each. Most of all our guys said the landscape there was nice but not enough to spend total 10H travel. Actually I agree one and the other may have different opinion to the view of the place even though myself were impressed. I see someone feel so boling view here. The time was correct, each terrace had water whose reflection of sunshine generate more beautiful scene than the periods of not having water. What I can say is actually more than half of my tour party did not think it had value to come here spending several days. They thought Yunnan province has more approrpiate places to visit than here. I disagree this idea, but i was minority. Our tour included 19 Chinese and 3 Japanese.

As I was planning my family trip, I was debating whether the rice terraces of Yuanyuang were worth a visit. We were really glad that we did not give this heavenly place a miss. As our private tour guide Henry (of yunnanxanadutours.com) told us, in the winter months the rice terraces were a sight to behold as the terraces were filled up with water and shimmered like mirrors im the sunlight. We stayed a Jacky's guesthouse located in a small village admist the terraces. A must for photographers and scenery lovers. Jacky and his mum and helpers cooked us a great dinner. The children were able to run around outside the guesthouse in the morning.

The Cultural Landscape of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces has been listed as UNESCO World Heritage in the year 2013. It’s rather the area between Honghe and Yuanyang County than just one single place to visit and see this entire masterpiece of the Hani people. Public transportation to this area is available but not well developed as it is still a hidden gem and not yet subject to mass tourism. The best way to go there is by private car with updated GPS. It’s about 320 km south and a 5-6 hrs drive from Kunming via the highway G8511 and from Yuanjiang the S216 to Honghe County. We had a stopover in the simple Honghe Yunti Hotel (Lianhua Dadao) before we continued to drive 1.5 hrs via the interesting mountain road XG77 southwards through wilderness but also sugar cane and rice fields to Baohua Village to visit the rice terraces there. Right side just before the village is a small parking area with the first viewing platform. We were shocked and speechless from the overwhelming view of the terraces as there it becomes so obvious, what monumental results hard human work x persistence can achieve! We were lucky to have an almost clear view for some moments as it is normal on cloud height to be surrounded by thick fog from time to time. Many locals, most women dressed in their traditional costumes, were there for chatting with each other. Some had simple market stalls, just a table, and offered their red rice and other local produce. They told us that the longest cascade of their terraces has more than 3000 levels! We followed a group from a wedding party walking down to another platform with even better view to the rice terraces where they were competing in dancing and flirting and making out the next couple ready for wedding. After all, the newly appointed groom could carry his girl home. And all other women were smiling. What an amusing experience.
We followed the suggestion of a young lady from a market stall to have lunch at their nearby home in the village after we finished our visit of the rice terraces. Later her husband guided us to their freshly renovated home, showed us the rooms which they intend to rent out to tourists in future. Their chicken soup, fish and vegetables were extremely tasty and the atmosphere full of relaxing, warmhearted hospitality. We bought much kilogram red rice from this family as gift for our friends at home.
The whole area has so much more to explore and to experience than just the unique Hani people’s rice terraces of universal value and under construction and maintenance since more than 1000 years. The best are the people, who made it! We regret, that we planned to spend just one day only there for taking some pictures. It’s worth another journey instead of just a stop over to learn more from Hani culture about pace of time, harmony between people and their environment based on exceptional and long-standing social and religious structures. I’m sure; this visit will not be my last to the Hani people region.

You can have several marvelous views across the rice terraces and the mountain scenery without paying for a ticket. Just ask the management of your guesthouse or one of the drivers of the minibuses, some Chinese knowledge could be helpful. Sure, you need some luck concerning the weather but the area is nothing for a one day stopover anyway.

You will not see so many rice terraces in other places in the world. Views on the morning and in the evening were different. So you should hire a car with a driver.

Make sure the rice terrasses have water in them, contact Jacky first to make sure, otherwise the picures will just look dull and without any special effects.
