My sister-in-law and I planned to climb Chirripo to celebrate her 60th birthday, but just before we arrived in Costa Rica March 2, Chirripo was closed temporarily. Our very helpful trip coordinator Nichole at Costa Rica Custom Trips scrambled to find us another climb, and we soon found ourselves in the small village of San Jeronimo, in the good hands of Merlin Gamboa, a mountain guide at Aturena. What a wonderful turn of events for us! Merlin soon gave us a power point preview of the climb, and he and his associates helped with organizing what we would need for the next early morning's ascent. Aturena is a community association. We were hosted (and fed) before and after the climb in a very comfortable cabin by a local family who also gave us an informative tour of their boutique coffee business. Porters (whole families, some on horseback) carried our heavier items for us up to "The Refuge" at km11, where Janet, a neighbor of our guide, prepared hearty warm meals for us. The Refuge is bare bones and not so well-insulated, but the joy of having completed an 11km, 6000ft ascent to an exceptional view above the clouds overcame any discomfort. The climb itself was magnificent, through pastures, tree-lined paths, scrub bushes, clouds, and rocky terrain. As we climbed, Merlin offered lots of info re the terrain, the flora and the fauna, and especially the birds. He carefully paced our ascent to accommodate our sea-level NJ lungs and legs. We made the final 1km ascent to the summit in the morning, our long view from the top changing rapidly as clouds danced around us in the wind. Cerro Ena, the little-visited neighbor of Chirripo, is a magnificent climb that I hope others will learn of and be able to enjoy as we did. If you want a true experience of Costa Rican community, as well as a climb of a lifetime, contact Aturena. Ask for Merlin, and choose Cerro Ena.

I can recommend the services of Aturena, they are doing a great job to promote tourism in the area. You can contact them by email, but they are also very responsive via WhatsApp. We had a fantastic guide - Kenneth - very professional and knowledgeable about the trail, the surrounding nature, the history of the village etc. It was a 3 day tour, starting with a night proceeding the hike in San Jeronimo. Our hosts were also amazing, extremely friendly, treating us with a tasty dinner, breakfast as well as lunch at the end of the hike. The excursion was well organized and tailored to our needs. We hope to come back again to discover another trail or spend some time in the beautiful village of San Jeronimo.

Aturena provided a fantastic package which enabled us to stay with the community in their beautiful village before climbing up Chirripo with a local guide on a very quiet, beautiful route. Only 5 people per day are allowed to use the route so booking in advance is essential but its well worth it. Well maintained path all the way up through stunning scenery with lots of bird life, lizards etc. We then climbed the peak the next day at dawn to watch sunrise, fantastic!

Cerro ena is amazing and the less visited, more beautiful version of cerro chirripo. Our guide from ATURENA San Jeronimo was amazing. I cant wait to come back and do it again. Cerro Ena es increíble. Menos visitada pero más linda que Cerro Chirripo. El guía de ATRUENA San Jeronimo fue increíble también. Ojalá que pueda visitar otra vez.

I had the incredible pleasure of hiking the tallest mountain in Costa Rica with Aturena. They are located a very convenient bus ride from San Isidro General. I went with a group of friends, 5 in total. Once we arrived we went to their offices where their guides took us through a great presentation on what we could expect on Chiripo! The presentation was very informative and the guides were incredibly knowledgeable and happy to take questions. The next day we set out on our hike. Our guide was fantastic, he let us set our own pace and taught us about all the plants we encountered on the way. There are two trails to get to Chiripo but Aturena is the only provider of this one particular trail. I have done both and highly recommend doing their exclusive trail! It is the only one that takes you through The Savana de Los Leones, a beautiful plateau before the base of Chiripo, which was one of the highlights of the trip and one of the most beautiful sights of my life. We then arrived at the top of the mountain where we stayed for 2 nights. There you can order food, coffee, and hot chocolate. I highly recommend bringing a mix of your own good as plates at the top can be on the more expensive side, but are delicious. We went to the summit after our first night there, we were lucky with the weather and had great visibility! We actually saw a man propose to his girlfriend at the top, she said yes! Was super romantic. The following day we climbed to the top of Crestones, which is an incredibly massive rock formation close to the base. I'd never seen anything like it, the sunset while set up there by the rocks was truly breathtaking. The following day we set back down the trail, one last pass through the Sabana, and made it back to Arturena. The Savana de Los Leones, Crestones, and Chiripo are an incredible sight and I highly recommend it. I can't wait to go back and take another one of their tours to other mountain peaks!
