A little gem
Sep 2021
What a little gem. The hike up to the castle is quite challenging but doable and well worth the effort.

Castle with a view
Jul 2021 • Solo
Amazing views of Lago di Como. Do not listen to Google- you can find a path from Varenna which is about 300 m.long. I really like the ghost figures. You can see the remains of the castle, dungeon, and climb the tower.

Great views
Sep 2020 • Couples
Nice walk from Varenna. It is steep sometimes but you can take your time. Little terrace at the entrance for lunch, coffee and ice cream. Not many tables so we were happy it was quiet the day we went. Entrance is €4 pp. It is great to look over Lake Como from the ruins. We did not like the birds, it always feels bad to see such beautiful animals in captivity, no matter how they are being treated. We left before the show started.

Cruel and disappointing
Sep 2020 • Couples
Birds of prey cramped in small, dingy cages and only let out for entertainment purposes where they are tethered on a tiny lawn.

The views are amazing and the hike there is also really nice. It is recommended to take the small path especially for pedestrians is you want to walk up there.

One of the best views ever seen
Aug 2020 • Couples
This is well worth the walk. We were planning our route on google maps and then when we arrived at Varenna saw a map which showed a small path that takes you right to the Castello Di Vezio and that was much faster than the way google maps was suggesting. There was a small fee to get into the castle area but it was so worth it and I recommend everyone to go up here if they are in Varenna. The view is simply magnificent.

The view is the star up here!

This site is portrayed as a castle. It really is just an enclosure that you can walk to the top of. We drove up the hill since we were on our way out of town. The parking is free for 2 hours. After winding our way through the small group of homes, we arrived at the entrance. There are quite a few steps to get to the point where you pay to enter the grounds. The views of the town of Varenna are amazing from up there. There is a lower area, kind of a cave, that was occupied by the Germans in WW2, but I don't think it's worth the trip down. Walking upwards, you will notice the "ghost" figures. When you enter the "castle" are, it is basically just 4 rock walls with a tower in the middle. You can climb the tower via a drawbridge and some small stairs. The view from the top of the tower is even better. As we left, we noticed the hawks on the grounds out front. They were tied up and had names. This place is worth a visit, just don't expect much of a "castle".

More fairytale than fortress
Nov 2019 • Family
Vezio Castle has stood high on its rocky outcrop above Lake Como and the picturesque village of Varenna for over 1000 years - although it’s safe to say it hasn’t looked like it does now for all of that time. It was founded by Theodelinda, Queen of Lombardia, some time in the early 7th century and at one time stretched walls down the steep slope to enclose Varenna within its protective bosom. Theodelinda was an influential figure in these parts for over 30 years but, from what I can tell, she was strangely uninteresting, her chief concerns being converting her husbands to her particular flavour of catholicism from whatever misguided belief system that had served them up until then.

For the British visitor used to far grander scale medieval fortresses with walls several feet thick, Veszio feels more like an elaborate folly in the grounds of some stately home, surrounded as it is by it’s olive groves, gardens scattered with statuary and fibreglass ‘ghosts’ staring from the walls across Lake Como. But castles in Britain are all for 3 or 4 centuries later in origin than this one. Technology to build and destroy them had moved on. Vezio was a fortress by dint of its position, not the thickness of its walls.

The walk up to the castle is long and, in places, quite steep. You have to put some effort in to get here. Once here though the views in all directions are stunning - even without the bonus of the castle itself. Be sure to visit the underground dungeons deep beneath the castle. There’s none of that faux-medieval torture stuff down here (although there are a couple of fibreglass ‘ghosts’ lurking - no idea what they are all about!) - these tunnels were extended and fortified during the First World War as part of the defensive linea Cadorna to keep the Germans from invading via nearby Switzerland. The central tower is reached by a small but apparently fully functional drawbridge. Inside there’s an exhibition all about the local dinosaur; Lariosaurus, which was discovered in Perledo, just up the road, in 1830. It’s more tiny Loch Ness monster than enormous T-Rex - which is lucky because this is a small tower. From the top of the tower the already extensive views become even extensiver. Which is what you’d expect after climbing all those steps.

As a castle Vezio is more fairy tale than might military fortress, but as a place to visit for fabulous views, it’s peerless. Take a peek at the birds of prey (quietly), admire the olive groves and enjoy a fine espresso at the cafe on the way out.

Worth visiting, the view is amazing! I liked it much more than the view from Brunate in Como. And also Varenna is beautiful!
