I was there in April as the commenter above for photographic purposes. For me early morning when the sun is low is best so the light penetrate the caves. The waters were relatively calm that also helps some of the caves... More

Sorry but I don't know about buses from Balmaceda to Puerto Rio Tranquilo. We rented a van in Balmaceda from EuropCar who I do not recommend! They put a $1,000 US hold on our credit card and wouldn't release it for 3 weeks... More

I don't know if you can hire driver . there is buses to use if you dont drive . it's a tricky gravel road through jungle with nearly zero life :) don't really have idea of hijacking . I've seen people do but they wait hours... More
