If not for the ongoing construction the place would be more much more beautiful with clearer water streaming. The sunrise viewed from the hotel I am staying was stunning. Do take note that all the hotels here do not have lift. Not all vehicles are allowed to enter the town, do get your driver to make arrangements for the luggages otherwise you would have drag them all way along the rocky and dusty road of about 150m into the town.

Yunshuiyao is a romanticized Chinese rural village to its best. The scenic area is a lush, picturesque collection of historic tulous, old banyan trees and serene waterfront. It is also a lively community with real residents scattered around the tourist route. Farmers nearby sell fresh produces like red banana (a Zhangzhou specialty), grapefruit and passionfruit. It is probably the most memorable part of Fujian.

what a place to visit a traditional village with a few tulous in it. trees there were hundreds years old and a creek running through the village. clean, tidy, and welcoming. villagers selling local produce and snacks found nowhere else. villagers as guides to tell us stories and her own stories. couldn’t have asked for more.

It's worth an overnight stay in this village, it's pretty big and at least 3 tulous to explore and the night views are superb! My favourite is huiyuan lou- it was not available for visiting via the main entrance (guarded by security) but we managed to chance upon it through another sidewalk that also leads to the tulou. I stayed at OYO zhejiahaonongzhuang which is near the main entrance of the village so it's a good option if you have some luggage and don't want to drag them all the way deep into the village. Be sure to catch the daily ancient puppet show at the stage area, even though it's kinda short ;p Also recommended to take a day trip to nearby tianluokeng tulou cluster to see the four dishes one soup :)

I read so much about 雲水謠and wanted to see this beautiful place. But when I arrived, it looked too commercial. All houses turned into shops and restaurants. Also lots of tourist and I try my best to use angle to cut them out of the photos. Very disappointed

There are a few "earthen building" villages. Yunshuiyao is one of them. You typically take 3-4 hours to explore one village. Due to time constraints, we only visited this as it has beautiful rivers and greenery other than the famous earthen buildings. If you just want to see the earthen buildings, this village may not be a good choice as there is not many variety, we only saw two complete ones and two torn down due to war. There are many photo spots and some inns where you can have lunch, be sure to try their salted chicken. For one or two buildings, you can go up by paying the entrance free of 5rmb. There are also free tea tasting in the buildings, no obligations to purchase the tea leafs. We hired a private Chinese tour guide at 500rmb (may be more pricey as we booked through the hotel we stayed), the tour guide is worth it as you won't get lost and will be led from start to end.

The place is very beautiful and picturesque. Do not go during the Chinese peak period, as there would be tons of Chinese tourist.

I went in March, and it was their non-peak period.

My tour guide told us that this place has been around since the Ming dynasty. It was an interesting to see the old fig trees and walk along the pebbled paths and watched a puppet show. The houses the lined the street is a little too commercialised, with all the peddlars and touts asking you to buy their local snacks such as skewered eggs and sausages. Was there over the May Day holiday and the crowd was a little too overwhelming with the pushing and loud chatters. Otherwise, it was an interesting and educational visit.

This is a great place for an overnight stay or longer if you have time. We stayed for one night when visiting the tulou in Nanjing County. To get here we took a bus 6 from the Tourist Centre (4 RMB). We bought our tickets at the entry (90 RMB each) and when went to our accommodation. When leaving, we took the number 6 bus to Nanjing County Railway Station (15 RMB). In the village there are various tulou, 2 of which have historic significance and are included in the ticket. The village is really in 2 parts; there's the historic well-maintained part that the tourists visit, and then there's where the locals live. By wandering around everywhere, you can see how the locals live, which is perhaps more interesting than seeing the 2 'special' tulou. You'll find various restaurants in both parts. There's also a few supermarkets. The village is lovely. It's well worth a visit. Hopefully it retains its charm and doesn't get over-commercialised.
