The tulou of Zhangzhou are an architectural marvel that transports you to a world full of history and culture. These impressive buildings, built of mud and wood, are a testament to the human ingenuity and community life of the Hakka people. As you walk through its halls, you feel the warmth of tradition and the hospitality of its inhabitants, who proudly share their legacy.
Visiting the tulou is a unique experience that combines the natural beauty of the landscape with the cultural richness of the region. Each tulou tells a story, and by exploring its different levels and rooms, one can imagine the daily life of its former inhabitants. Without a doubt, it is a destination that you cannot miss if you are looking for an authentic connection with the history of China.

First time in TuLou and this is the first stop our local guide showed us. It's amazing that up to this day and age, there are still people living in this ancient clay structures. I noticed it's usually the older generations, some with their grandchildren. Life seems so simple to these people (sans the tourists). They sell their goods and wares in front of their doors.

Do make the effort to see this piece of local architecture and history even as the place gets more and more commercialized.

Zhangzhou Tu Lou is a place that you should not miss. There are many ancient Tu Lou which you can admire the architecture. It really made you admire the ancient craftmanship and how it had benefits generation and generation of Chinese. Imagine the oldest is about 700 years old.

I was taken through this area by a supplier and we stopped at one of the less visited buildings. I was told this because the people dont charge for you to go in.
The place was run down - partly because it is old - and partly because its neglected. Lots of old junk kept in corners, broken toys and dust covered cheap suitcases, as well as goats and rabbits and chickens and feral cats kept in the ground floor rooms. There was an amazing large stone mortise and when you looked in side there was an old cigarette packet and some other trash.
The ground floor was for cooking and storage, the first floor for eating and meeting and the floors above for sleeping.

This tulou seems to be the top tourist attraction. Busloads of travel groups visit and the noise is just too high. There are many alternatives as this building has been refurbished for tourists. Not recommended.

Lovely place to visit. Local people are so very kind. Lots of walking. We were here during slow time which made the experience much better.
