A shame as this could have been so much better. I am a keen sailor and even wrote before we went to ask if I could get involved with the actual sailing. When we got on board we were told the mainsail was broken and we could only use the fore sail and hence had to use the engine as well most of the time.

We stayed overnight so we could get in some good sailing on day one and hopefully see the whales on day two. So the sailing experience did not live up to expectations.

Day two some other guests came on board and we went off in search of the whales. Unfortunately we spotted in the far distance some spray indicating whales were there but we never got anywhere near close to actually seeing them. We spent the whole time in a sort of flotilla of various sized tourist boats all racing in the same direction to try and see whales. Whenever there was a sighting in the distance of some spray a couple of small speed boats zoomed off to get close and hence frightened the poor whales away. We never got even close because of this. Then put the engines on and motored home.

Why describe this as a sailing experience when it is in effect a motor boat.

The only good thing about the cruise was the crew staff...they were helpful, other than that it was absolute waste of money starting from the booking, thier was no proper response when making the booking and the food was totally bland and not up to standard, we didn't get the food what was stated in the menu, the water was clogged all time..my expectation levels were very high when making the booking as it was not cheap and totally not satisfied...totally not worth at all for the money.
Please try to rectify the shortcomings for the upcoming guests.
Thanks

We booked two cabins for an overnight charter, cost was $950. We were aware that these catamarans have 6 cabins and that we would likely be in the company of others, no problem at all with that. The website states “the south sailing cruise offers you an unforgettable sea-cation escape from waking up to the view of the sunrise and the opportunity to experience water activities in the tropical bay of Weligama”. The day before we were due to go we received an email from Sail Lanka that simply stated “this is to keep you informed that since it’s not a private cruise we will be taking more people in the morning for whale watching session”. Regards Manush. We questioned this and were told that the only cabins booked were ours so they would be “ coming back to Mirissa harbour around 6.30am (which is before sunrise!) to take about 20 people for a whale watching cruise.” As per company policy if a client doesn’t book the boat as private for the morning we can take whale watching session till we reach maximum persons count”. No apology, no explanation, just breathtaking arrogance and rudeness. So much for waking up to the view of the sunrise and the opportunity to experience water activities”.They obviously decided that because they hadn’t sold the other cabins they would use the yacht for running a whale watching session (with us still onboard! We promptly cancelled. With hindsight we can see we were not the first people to experience rough treatment. It is so disappointing, particularly in a country where we were overwhelmed the friendliness and helpfulness of the locals.

It’s expensive and to be honest not worth it. For the price, the food was really poor and there wasn’t a great sense of hospitality. We saw masses of dolphins which was great but no whales and I got the feeling that was no great surprise. It’s a long 7 hours in the heat. Swimming snorkelling and paddle boarding was left right to the end - just outside the harbour in very murky water. All felt very lazy. Even having someone to talk a bit about the subject would have improved me review.

An excellent experience that exceeded all expectations! The staff on board were all so kind and could not have done more for us. They even produced a birthday cake with 24hrs notice from my husband! Communication was not the easiest but we got by! The food was excellent and there was plenty of it.

Shockingly unprofessional! Despite booking this cruise well in advance with confirmed details, the Sail Cruise staff mysteriously vanished on the day of our reservation, callously ignoring our attempts to reach them. Upon boarding at the port, our dismay deepened when we discovered that the promised food was nowhere to be found, leaving our group famished for a staggering three hours.

Adding to the escalating nightmare, at around 8 pm, the captain audaciously anchored the ship in the middle of the sea. To our horror, he announced that we were to disembark using life-saving boats—an incredibly dangerous and terrifying prospect. This unsettling decision was justified by Sail Lanka's apparent lack of docking permission at the port. As if that weren't enough, we were unceremoniously dropped off at an isolated beach, devoid of any signs of life or light. The insensitivity of the staff, particularly Ravi, our point of contact from Sail Lanka, became glaringly evident.

To make matters worse, our group included small children and elderly individuals, and the subsequent 20-minute rocky trek from the deserted island to the shore became a perilous ordeal, aggravated by the complete absence of light. The lack of empathy, utter disregard for our safety, and overall careless behaviour exhibited by the Sail Cruise staff and Ravi from Sail Lanka turned what should have been a memorable cruise into a nightmarish experience etched in disappointment and frustration.

We had an amazing wale watching boat trip. The journey started with an early morning cruise out to the deep sea. A very solid and spacious vessel.
Breakfast on board was delicious. All the crew were friendly and helpful.
We were so happy to see 2 large pin wales and then on our way home we saw a large pod of false killer wales and a large pod of common dolphins. On our way home we stopped for a swim and paddle board it the lovely warm ocean. The lunch on board was amazing, Sanu the chef was brilliant and attention to detail was amazing.
I would highly recommend. Thank you to the crew and captain Maduranga for an amazing and unforgettable experience.

We came to Mirissa for whale watching. We realized that the most popular kind of shared boat here is a large double decker with 40-150 people on board (depending on the company). We were recommended sail lanka as they have these catamarans which carry <=20 people. The pricing of course is slightly higher than the other more crowded boats but within reason

The booking process was a smooth one, we did it all over WhatsApp and payments were made online before the trip.

The boat serves breakfast and lunch on the what watching excursion ans also stops in the bay for a swim or paddle boarding. Overall it lasts about 5-6 hours. The food served us freshly prepared on the boat and good quality.

My criticisms about the excursion was:

1) the crew didn’t speak a lot of English but they tried hard to keep us informed about what we were seeing when we saw it

2) I was surprised that the boats didn’t seem to have any wireless communication with other boats and were more following visual cues to find the next area to go to. It’s a vast ocean and without the communication it is much harder to spot the whales.

3) the whole area is clean ocean and nice but the spot they anchor back at is closer to the start point. Maybe they could choose a more secluded spot for the swimming. But to be clear the sea is clean everywhere, it would just be nicer if no other boats around instead of the 3-4 that were anchored in the same area

4) it would also have been better if they shared some statistics about how often have they recently spotted whales and which species. There was no information forthcoming about this. As it is a specific whale watching trip this I thought was a bit strange.

We went on the yacht cruise in Trincomalee to see whales and dolphins, but we also went snorkeling too. Furthermore, this was by far the most ethical way you could see the whales a dolphins compared to the smaller speed boats, which I genuinely struggled with. However, Sail Lanka did not chase the animals or 'hunt them' down. Which was the main reason we went with them. They were far more responsible than the other tours operating in the area. The snorkeling and food was also fantastic.

We spent a wonderful week sailing through the South Coast of Sri Lanka, visiting the old town of Galle, and other interesting places such as fishermen's towns and Buddhist temples. Wales watching was part of our holiday but we weren’t lucky enough to see them.
The catamaran was comfy with spacious cabins, a big area for sunbathing and a dining table.
A special mention to the crew: the Captain IP, Fernando, Bhanu, and chef Madu who pampered us with delicious local food and me with an incredible tasty vegan meal. They also accompanied us on all the visits we planned and they satisfied our requests and needs. An overall 5 stars for their treatment.
