An island 4 hours by train south of Shanghai, 20 minutes south of Wenzhou and then out in the open sea. Blue water, clean air, ocean breeze, palms, pine trees and even some banana. Freshest seafood not spoiled during transportation. An island in the sun with beaches and green hills. 80 Minutes by speedboat away from pollution. If the speedboat doesn't get you to puke then the island bus will. But no worries, there are plenty of sick bags handed out and all is taken easy. Hotels and private bedrooms are outside of any international quality standard. Sleep on the bamboo mat on beds that receive new sheets maybe once a season or when really needed, towels? not in our hotel. Weekend price for a bed like a 4 star hotel in Shanghai, during the week it is half. Many private rooms, but don't expect that a reservation means anything. And first reserve the boat ticket. Food? Many places to eat fresh fish and all kinds of mussels and creatures from the sea floor. Delicous, but just very simple steaming or BBQ. Ok for 3 days, but then you want to take over the kitchen ... Nanji island is far away from mainland, but perfect 3G connection. Military installations in every corner. No private cars, just a well-organized tourist bus fleet that shuffles you around or honks you off the street. If you are in the bus then you are taken care of, if you walk on the street you are treated like a chicken in the driveway. Lunch time it gets quiet and after the last boat leaves at around 16h (probably depends on season and the sea). Don't come immediately after a Typhoon. Then the beach cleaning fails and the water is full of civilization rubbish. Plastic backs and I even collected a syringe with needle of the beach. Terrible. On normal days it is fine. Dream beach, yellow sand, flat, high and low tide - all very nice. Weekends the boats bring up to 1500 tourists to the island every day, during the week it is less than half. We stayed until Monday and that was a great idea. Wenzhou travel agents apparently run the show for small groups of up to 20 people - more don't fit the bus. They arrive early morning, get carried around to the various vista points and a villa where famous people stayed, then standing at the beach with knees in the water, fresh seafood, sunrise at another vista point and back to the mainland. The rest of the visitors are probably family members and friends of people that do some tourist business on the island. No western faces anywhere. I would say 90% or from Wenzhou or nearby. The harbor town is called Aojiang, with direct train from Shanghai. Would I go back there? Probably yes, but with even lower expectations. The best would be to buy a villa and make it a nice B&B, but that is just a dream. Somehow, it reminded me of Calabria in Italy.

Either most photos I see on the Internet were altered, or the sea was abnormally murky when we went. Scenery still is beautiful, but you can see gorgeous mountains anywhere else in Zhejiang.

Hotels are disgusting- literally the worst I've seen- no towels, dirty sheets, no shower, just a drain in the floor. We went with people from Zhejiang and even they were taken aback by the hotel. Don't go if you don't like seafood either since that's all you're going to get.
