Yunmen Temple situated on well kept grounds. Went in March had a lovely cool day. Enjoyed walking around the grounds and appreciating well maintained gardens.

It was a perfect time of year to visit as the weather was cooler and even as we walked up to the pagoda where the monks got together, you would not sweat much. It was soothing to listen to them. Easy walk up, not that many stairs if you head up just after visiting the temple.

The temple is located at the foot of Ciyun Peak, and was built in 923 by Wenyan Buddhist monk. It is apparently the founding place of the Yunmen sect and one of China's key monasteries so it attracts many pilgrims.

Yunmen Temple is an amazing place, not only we could take a look around the grand designed temple, but also we paid a visit to another attraction nearby, the home to Yao Ethnic Minority. We really had fun here. The local people here are very nice.

Told to beware of lobbyists to make wishes and donate a big amount of money in many temples or taoist koons, I was impressed that incense sticks are provided here if I wanted some to make a wish outside the main hall. Of course, the cost is covered by the admission fee. This minimises trouble. And I didn't see any people persuading visitors to make donations to stay away from bad luck.

For non-buddhists, the history may sound boring and not easy to understand. For ordinary people, the temple serves as an excellent place, especially the big trees, the corridors, the ponds outside and the hill if you have energy. Please be advised no photos of the main hall and the god statues should be taken. This is considered disrespectful. This applies to all temples in China, Hong Kong and Macau included.

To the west of Shaoguan, in Ruyuan county, sitting at the foot of Cibei Peak, is the sprawling Yunmen Temple. It has a history of over 1000 years, originally built in 923. It is one the five grand sects of the Zen School of Buddhism. Beautiful surroundings, and has nice walks up the mountain behind it. Not too far of a drive from Shaoguan or Ruyuan.
