The rum produced from sugar cane on Marie Galante is world famous. This distillery produces the Père Labat brand - the most popular brand of the island.

The owner explained all about the distillerie. He had to use water and fire.

We learned a lot from him.

However, I don't drink.

Still I enjoyed what I learned.

Worthwhile to see!

At Distillerie du Poisson, you really get to see the rum making process in action, unlike in the other two distilleries on the island (or perhaps we were just unlucky with the others). Visiting Poisson is recommended after visiting Bielle, as Bielle does a much better job of explaining the process (and the rum is far better in Bielle in my opinion). PS. At Poisson (and in Bielle) you get to taste the rum, whereas Bellevue doesn't offer that opportunity.

When I arrived it was after lunch and the distillery (which is basic and a bit beaten up) was shut down. Tours are available 0900 to 1300. The same for tastings. If you arrive at other times, you can go in and look around (be careful!) but not see as much. There’s a restaurant on site that looked good. You can buy rum there.

Right near to the bungalow we had rented was the next best rum on Marie-Galante, at Père Labat Distillery. Here, we were able to tour the entire area where the sugar cane is crushed to collect its juice, then cooked down and fermented to obtain the rum found in stores. And I mean we were walking through the factory, right over the conveyor where sugar cane was being fed into a grinder, then up to a second level where we could peer into the tanks as they filled with cane juice...We were in the heart of the action! It is important to remember that this is a working facility, not a museum, which people tend to forget. It's not pretty, with tour guides and information panels galore, is a factory where they make delicious rum. Don't expect a pretty museum. There is a visible effort being put into renovating the facilities, to make the place more tourist-friendly. Sadly, we've learned in the past that when an operation puts more focus on the tourist aspect of their enterprise, they put less focus on the quality of their product. This seemed to be the case at Père Labat - great tour, great facilities, more installations being created as we toured(seriously. they were pouring the cement as we walked around!), but the product was a little more harsh on the palate than we expected. There is also a restaurant on site, open in the evenings, which we did not have the chance to try, but the menu seemed interesting, and would warrant another look. All in all, a good visit to a working distillery, a nice morning, though not the best rum on the island, IMHO.

After visiting most of the distilleries on Martinique and Guadeloupe, we appreciated how rustic this one was. It was the first we were able to see and feel the fire heating the equipment. Given its size, it only takes 10 minutes or so to explore and then it's on to the obligatory tasting.

The Poisson rum distillery is famous because of its Pere Labat brand and here you can get their products at a good price. As far as a attraction, there's not much to it... even the product counter is very basic. We would not recommend a visit to this one, the two others on the island are much more interesting.

We arrived at the factory in mid-February which is outside the sugar cane harvesting season. Consequently the factory was not in operation but we were allowed in to check out the equipment.
Outside the factory you will find a sales and information booth where you can purchase the various products at a substantial discount from retail (€7 for a bottle of their 59 proof signature white rum). You are also welcome to sample the various brands but BE WARNED: while the most popular mixed drink in Guadeloupe is the ti' punch - similar to a daiquiri - the samples here are provided in the form which is the next most popular way to drink rum here - straight up with a water chaser.
Bottoms up!
