- micheal t5 contributionsI went for ashenda to mekele and I wanted to go to Abuna yemata Guh while I stayed in Tigray for one week.I went to wukro with a normal mini bus but after that we rented a minibus and we called a really humble guy called Aregawi to guide us. He was really know around the area because he grew up there. He was fluent in English and guided us through the whole trip.Visited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 2, 2023
- Niccolò P7 contributionsVisit Tigray with AregawiIncredible place, full of history that everybody should learn about, with some of the oldest and most important churches on Earth. I highly suggest you to visit as it is safe to visit (October 2023) after the brutal conflict of the past two years. I visited thanks to Aregawi, an amazing and talented local guide. I’ll leave his contacts here: aregawigebrehiwet6@gmail.com and +251914795520 for WhatsApp. He has great prices, will plan everything according to your needs and wishes and he’s a great travel companion. I visited the churches of Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor which can be reached by a one or two hours hike with some of the most stunning views and the chance to meet the old priest in charge of the churches. I also climbed to the church of Abune Yemata, one of the most spectacular places you will ever see.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 26, 2023
- DanielGerroa, Australia11 contributionsTop tour guide for northern EthiopiaLike many others before me, I can highly recommend tour guide Berhanu (and his driver, Gebre) for guided tours in northern Ethiopia. Both speak English, are honest and reliable, and very helpful. They go out of their way to ensure the customer is happy. More than that, Berhanu has a network of colleagues throughout Ethiopia, and can even arrange tours in parts where he does not operate. After expressing an interest in visiting Omo Valley, Berhanu quickly arranged a tour for me there, saving me a lot of hassle. If you want an enjoyable, customised tour in northern Ethiopia, send Berhanu a Whatsapp chat message on +251914861090, and you're sure to be pleased with the result, as I was.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 27, 2023

As a solo traveller I was not sure how to get there but luckily Berhanu helped with everything from booking, to getting a ride to the mountain and even guides to help with climbing. My trip was special and the icing on the top was seeing the village life and making my own Injera. Feel free to reach Berhanu on +251 91 486 1090 and I believe he has a Facebook page also so you can find him there. - 123ontheroad211 contributionsA guide with passion and knowledge about the area Tigray. We did a 2 day tour with Halie Tesfay to Ghrealta rock churches and Wukro rock churches, Teka tesfay rock churches and Wukro museum. Beside that we visited a mosque, a market (loved it!) and of course we had many views along the way. The hotel was clean and comfortable. Halie is a kind man, which knowledge about history and nature and loves to share it with tourists. We had lunch with some of his family in a traditional house, which also made it personal. The churches are hidden in the rocks, so one needs a guide to get there - I went with Fisseha, who lives in the area (but also makes trips to Danakil, Axum, Lalibela, souther tribes etc.). He is one of the best guides I ever had with excellent english, great mindset and lots of knowledge and information. I just finished some great hikes with great Mountain Views and visited the amazing rock churches with the best guide who has lots good knowledge and story about the churches and the local life and the time they experienced during the war! I have been traveling over twenty years and I only recommend good quality guide and knowledgeable guide. Even I met so many local guides said that I was lucky to have Fisshea as guide. He is highly regarded even for locals. He speaks great English. I learned a lot and impressed by how he scheduled things for me to visit based on my preference and energy. Here is his contact info. Hope more people support local guides instead the big agencies take all the money away. FISSEHA fisha1683@gmail.com +251914430313 He is not just doing Tigray churches but also the beautiful Danakil Depression. If you also want to visit Axum Lalibela Gondar And the south to the tribes (Omo valley) He can also arrange those tours for you!! Please give FISSEHA a message and I am sure you will enjoy his service !!! I attached a pic at the moment the old monk met my guide FISSEHA . The old monk was so happy to meet him again during the war and knew he is still ok.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten January 13, 2024

I'd like to recommend our fantastic guide Berhanu (whatsapp +251914861090 / email birwel21@gmail.com).
We were camping in the Tigray region last month (Dec 2019) for 5 days. It was an all-inclusive package: guide(himself), transportation (airport to airport), camping equipment and camping crew, food, entrance fees). Berhanu helped to put together and customize everything. We discussed on whatsapp beforehand. The process went smooth, we were picked up on time at the airport, and visited all the churches as we agreed. (except one since we were out of time) The wonderful food our cook Mary prepared was one of the best we've had in Ethiopia. Berhanu put safety first, he was very caring when guiding us in the mountains. He took us to many great viewpoints (good for photos) where we didn't see other tourists around. On the last day, we camped at his mother's. It is a traditional house with lots farm animals around. His sister welcomed us with the coffee ceremony, and we even learned how to make injera from his mother! Overall, great experience. Contact Berhanu for your next trip!

Berhanu did an amazing job organizing a last minute trip that was perfectly tailored to what our group wanted to see. Our guides were knowledgeable and friendly. They were also extremely patient when myself and another person in our party got sick. We had an enjoyable time exploring Axum, the Gheralta Churches, and The Danikil Depression. Our tour was extremely smooth despite our ailments . I strongly recommend using Berhanu's very reasonably priced service if you plan on visiting the area.

Amazing experience in Tigray. Great history, beautiful culture and detailed information on all the churches. Arigawe was knowledgeable and very detailed and happy to explain and answer any questions raised. Highly recommend Arigawe for going above and beyond: picking you at the airport (meet and greet) giving you a detailed tour and sending you back to the airport. His pricing is spot on and his itinerary is fully customisable.

We recently completed 2 day tours of Tigray churches (from Hawzen) with Berhanu (+251 91 486 1090) after meeting him at our hotel. We travel a lot and don't tend to take guides as we get tired of the constant attempts to over charge or rip you off in some way, but Berhanu was such a refreshing change that we signed up with him for two days!
Tigray itself was possibly the most relaxed and interesting place we have seen in Ethiopia, and an absolute must if you are OK with hiking (and heights is you are doing Abuna Yamata).
It was really refreshing to meet a guide and not feel like you are being pressured and ripped off from the start. We went for a few drinks in the evening and he was insistent on buying his own even though we offered repeatedly, and treated us to lunch and dinner. A really nice guy, and the only guide we've met in Ethiopia who we felt we got great value for money with and was actually genuine and honest with us.
If your doing Tigray definitely ask for him and enquire about the camping, because some of the spots looked beautiful, and we wish we had the time to do it!!
Would definitely recommend Berhanu as someone trustworthy, fun to be around, and genuinely good at his job. We will hopefully see you again Berhanu if we come back to Ethiopia!! And this time I won't wimp out of Abuna Yemata :D

Me and a friend went on a 3 day trek in Gheralta. We contacted Berhanu in advance and he organised everything. He picked us up in Mekele and welcomed us in Hawzien. After showing us the local market, we started our trek and were guided by his uncle (also called Berhanu). Overnight, we stayed in two different family homes which was a very special and personal experience. Also little stops during the treks at coffee houses or small cafés, made the experience feel like a community trek, where also the local community benefits from tourism. During our treks we visited 5 churches. The combination between hiking, meeting Berhanu's family and learning about Gheralta's churches, made the trip unforgettable. We would really recommend to contact Berhanu for visiting this region (+251 91 486 1090), he is very responsive on WhatsApp or you can also call him.

We visited the Gheralta mountains in the north of country in January 2024 and I have to say we were fortunate to meet Araya, who guided us to the amazing churches of Tigray. We visited 4 churches, which thanks to Araya each of them were in a different way beautiful. Proportional to our need Araya made a package for us including accommodation in a hotel with good standards, transportation, food etc for a fair amount of money.
Araya even made my wish come true and took us to a local wedding in the village. On our first hiking day his wife cooked for us a delicious Ethiopian dish and they invited us to their house for lunch.
If I would go back to Tigray in the future I will for sure ask Araya to guide me and take me to hike.
He as well organises camping in the Gheralta area.
I highly recommend him to anyone.
He is knowledgeable, is familiar with hiking and climbing spots and takes care of the wishes of his clients.
Unfortunately I felt a bit sick on my hike and wasn’t the fastest but he hiked with patience with me and didn’t make me feel bad about my speed.

One of the best things to do in Africa! I went to Gheralta and Mekele for 4 days with my mom. In the mornings we climbed 4th and 6th century churches and in the evenings we walked around city of Hawzen, where i played some table tennis with locals and they have fresh juice from any fruit you can imagine! Honestly for me and my mom Tigray seemed really safe, safer than some other parts of Ethiopia. People were really friendly and happy to finally see some tourists! I had a really good and fun guide who showed us the churches and went with us to the city, he arranged everything basically so it was very easy to just enjoy! We went to the churches with a car from Danakil.

A great adventure climb with no head paid to safety of any kind. This is an amazing place with the ascent to Abuna Yemata Guh a highlight for my boys and I. Guide will help you on the way and be prepared to tip them at the end. I gave 100 Birr for each of us - total 300 Birr (around 9 USD). You will also need to tip the local guide, and your own guide if going with a tour company. Don't be stingy with the tips, its small change for us, but provides food for the locals. The climb to Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor was also challenging but worth the views and the visit to the churches. Recommendations for travelers - do a bit of walking and physical training before you go and don't be wigged out by the climb - just give it a go, trust the Guides and don't look down!

Trekking in Gheralta Mountains was one of my favorite experience in Ethiopia. I spent 4 days with Gebre and his team in march. At first, I was a bit worried because of the recent war but finally I felt very safe in Tigray and people were very welcoming since it means for them that the war is definitely over. So there’s no problem at all about safety in Tigray, just go !
Gheralta Mountains are very beautiful with amazing views on the surroundings, and the churches are also really nice. Gebre is a very good guide and told me many interesting stories about the history and Tigray culture. He is a really good and generous person, he promotes local employment and helps local community in a sustainable way. This is really how tourism should work, so thank you for that Gebre ! He was also very helpful and helped me to arrange my trip after Tigray. So if you want to visit Tigray (anyway if you go to Ethiopia it’s a must!!), I can only suggest you to contact Gebre !

Hello, could it possible to do the trip in 2 days? And I need your contact please
Written March 21, 2019
I don't think there is a unique answer. It all depends on your physical fitness and on the time you have at your disposition. We did it in one day and it was good.
Written March 21, 2019
It looks really dangerous. Is this climb for professional climbers only?
Written December 18, 2018
If you are talking about climbing to Abune Yemata Church, the climbing part is short and you will do it with a harness. Also, there are local men there every day helping people to climb. This would not take longer than 5 minutes even for the most inexpert climber. If you are afraid of heights, I don't recommend it.
Regarding shoes, good boots are important for the trekking from where your transport will drop you until you reach the base of the mountain. For the climbing, you must do it barefoot as this is a church.
