I went to wukro with a normal mini bus but after that we rented a minibus and we called a really humble guy called Aregawi to guide us. He was really know around the area because he grew up there. He was fluent in English and guided us through the whole trip.

Incredible place, full of history that everybody should learn about, with some of the oldest and most important churches on Earth. I highly suggest you to visit as it is safe to visit (October 2023) after the brutal conflict of the past two years. I visited thanks to Aregawi, an amazing and talented local guide. I had a wonderful trop of 4 days in tigray. The region is now peacefull and has a lot of treasures. Incredible treks, churches of the first christians , market, archeological sites.. so culture and adventure in wonderful landscapes. I went on a solo trip to the mountains and it was breathtaking and beautiful. We did a 2 day tour with Halie Tesfay to Ghrealta rock churches and Wukro rock churches, Teka tesfay rock churches and Wukro museum. Beside that we visited a mosque, a market (loved it!) and of course we had many views along the way. The hotel was clean and comfortable. Great area with stunning rock formations, great views from the top and amazing rock hewn churches. The churches are hidden in the rocks, so one needs a guide to get there - I went with Fisseha, who lives in the area (but also makes trips to Danakil, Axum, Lalibela, souther tribes etc.). The End of december 2023 . I felt totally safe to visit this region. I just finished some great hikes with great Mountain Views and visited the amazing rock churches with the best guide who has lots good knowledge and story about the churches and the local life and the time they experienced during the war! I have been traveling over twenty years and I only recommend good quality guide and knowledgeable guide. Even I met so many local guides said that I was lucky to have Fisshea as guide. Enjoyed a most impressive 3 days 2 nights trip to the Danakil Depression & Erta Ale (the volcano) with a group, guided by "Fish".
