The Gleniff Horseshoe is the most spectacularly beautiful place I’ve ever seen. Photos don’t do it justice, and words can’t capture how I felt being there. It’s truly magnificent, very much worth the drive on the narrow roads leading there. I felt very small, but very connected to my Sligo ancestors. Like l said, words can’t capture my feelings, so I’ll just recommend the drive heartily!!

Why do we all not know about this ... If in Sligo you must drive this route. We found it by accident and it really needs to be much more publicised and signposted. .. It is stunning and make sure you find the magic hill. We only found it with local help (which added to the charm of the drive) .. finish with a visit to Langs pub in Grange

I have stayed in Bundoran on numerous occasions and always assumed (and plead my ignorance) that the signposts for the Gleniff Horseshoe was for a riding stables. I recently discovered that this was not the case and on my last visit to the area in September I visited the Barytes Mill and drove around the Horseshoe on two separate occasions during my 10 day stay.
I loved the walk around the Barytes Mill and across the road at the picnic area there is another trail that takes you along the river and over a bridge where you end up at the main road.
I drove along the Horseshoe - stopping on several occasions to appreciate the wonderful views of Mullaghmore and the Gleniff valley. On my first visit I couldn't find the cave of Diarmuid and Grainne as the cloud cover was too low, so I decided to return a few days later when the weather had improved. I would love to walk this route and hope too again when I return in 2016.

For my first visit to the Gleniff Horseshoe I decided to park at the picnic area and run the route - I reckon it is about 10K, the uphill is not so bad since it evens out and then starts uphill - I went clockwise and I think this is best because on the way back down the far side of the valley there was a very long downhill stretch (which of course would not be great uphill). There were some walkers at the top of the valley but given that it all looked like private land I am not sure where they were going - any readers who know and could recommend a route would be most welcome. My run was on a cloudy day - still beautiful but I imagine that it would be stunning on a sunny day.

looking for a nice walk in beautiful forest - that is the place to go. The Horseshoe has a nice picknick area and you can choose to walk just the small prepared loop or take longer walks and hikes.

Along the entire Horseshoe loop drive, there's plenty of spots to stop & get out & do short hikes. All worth it! There's some really great small waterfalls, some you have to look for! You can climb some of the surrounding mountains, but access is limited in most places by landowners who do not appreciate people walking on their lands, so be careful.

Such a scenic route hidden in the middle of Sligo.
Ideal to drive around or walk around if the weather is good.

You can walk the loop or drive it by car (careful --> very small roads) but I recommend the way on horseback. You can book the mountain ride in Island view riding stables <3

The Gleniff Horseshoe is a must-see for all lovers of nature and you have the options to both drive or walk it which is nice. The scenery is amazing, my one complaint is its a bit hard to find.

Where is the best place to stay when walking the Horseshoe? Anybody have any restaurant recommendations? Thanks

Hello - I saw several reviews that mentioned walking the loop rather than driving. I'm having trouble finding out where parking is available. I've read that most of the area is private property and I should stick to the road. I want to try to make sure I stick to the right place to park also. Thank you!

Hi Tammy,
We only drove the loop - and although there were tiny pull offs, I would not have left the car because it did feel like private property. There is something to be said about leaving this land as unspoiled as possible...
Anyway, my research indicates parking at the Benwisken Centre (in an article dated April 2017) - noting that the hiker was still only able to walk the roadway because of atmospheric conditions.
I also saw mention of roadside parking at Trailhead - but, if you will be staying in Sligo, you may want to reach out to your host for specifics.
Worth noting, I also read in an article dated 2007 that states that hiking access is strictly restricted by Mr. “Bull” McSharry and recommends driving the loop. 2018 is 11 years later, but if “Bull” is no longer in charge, I would not be surprised if his kin are.
I still say, there is something to be said for leaving this land alone - and the land itself seems to protect itself and gives warning to back off.
The drive is wild, worthy and wonderful - but I hope it remains a hidden gem rather than a regular haunt.
Be mindful, good luck, and enjoy!

Hi there,
Saw your post about Gleniff Horseshoe and that you ran it. Is there a lot of traffic on this road? Safe for running and/or walking? It seems there are no off-road routes that one could use?
Thanks!!
