About
The Castle of Roche Goyon, also called Fort La Latte, is a castle located on the tip of the Latte, near Cap Frehel in the department of Cotes-d'Armor in the municipality of Plevenon in the bay of Saint-Malo. Remarkable for its location on a rocky cape, facing the sea, it served as a backdrop for several films. The castle of Roche-Goyon was built in the fourteenth century by the lord of Matignon, Stephen III Gouon. The construction of the castle began in the 1340s, its keep dates from 1365-1370. In 1379, after the exile of the Duke of Brittany John IV, the castle was besieged by Bertrand Du Guesclin. It was not until the eighteenth century, under Louis XIV, that the castle regains its strategic interest. It will serve until the end of the First Empire where the evolution of military techniques led to its inadaptability. From 1892, it was sold to various private owners before being bought by an enthusiast Frederic Jouon Des Longrais in 1931 who undertook heavy restoration work.

Definitely worth a visit
Aug 2020 • Family
Already while approaching the Fort via Hiking path you get fabulous views on the castle.
The entrance fee is 6,50 for adults - not cheap, yet everything is in good order and you stroll around and get a good impression of medivial life (although of course a bit limited because of COVID). A highlight is the view from the tower.

A spectacular fort on the gorgeous Brittany coastline
Jul 2020 • Friends
The arrival on the site brings back great memories of the final sequences of the 1958 film The Vikings. This is a must visit destination for sure. It is very professionally managed and is only historically interesting but spectacular for all ages.

Explanations in English
Dec 2019
Being a tourist in France can be 'lost in translations'. Silly bit true, the French tend to think everyone speaks their beautiful language. It is always a surprise when a monument actually has explanations and sign in English. The fort is great, that much can be said, The walk to the fort is not that far, still spectacular and a bit bumpy.

TIP 1: the place is not particularly wheelchair-friendly. :)
TIP 2: we did not have time to walk along the rocky coast but I think you should for an even more memorable experience.

What a fortress is supposed to look like
Sep 2019 • Friends
Been to quite a few forts and castles in my life. Well located and planned to hold off invaders. This one was built to stay. It has been renovated and is in private hands. Don't mind paying an entrance fee when the people who spent the money may get something back for their efforts which are serious.

Kids always love a good fort
Aug 2019 • Family
You park in the car park at the top and walk down a sandy track. The views are already amazing as the fort comes into view, then the kids get really excited. Can’t remember how much it was to get in but worth every cent.
Most of the fort is still intact so you can go right to the top. The views are breathtaking looking out to see and along the coast line.
Highly recommend visiting if you’re exploring the area

A revisit
Aug 2019 • Family
We were here 13 years ago and came back as the kids would not have remembered it. No need to but the English guide as there was loads to read on the way round

Not overly expensive so would recommend it. Went round in a shade under 2 hours.

Remarkably preserved piece of history
May 2019 • Couples
Undoubtedly this was an important stronghold for those who occupied it, but the added bonus is a spectacular set of views of the coast and the sea, especially on a sunny day. The components of the fort/castle are well-explained and astonishingly ingenious and innovative. Well worth the drive and the hike from the car park.
