We were shocked at how much Cozumel has changed since we were last here scuba diving about 40 years ago! The town is a long ways from the sleepy little dive shack image we had in our mind.

The number of duty free shops is overwhelming and the number of new buildings incredible. The entire area is but one big souvenir/liquor/silver/duty free shop! The sculpture is a bit of relief!

This for me was really interesting.
Not seen anything like it on any of my travels.
Great for taking photos with family or friends with this as a backdrop.

Best photo opportunity on the island at sunset and sun rise. Shopping right across the street and taxi stand too.

Our family loves to visit this fountain at night. It's cool, nice, and beautiful. There is a little bakery up the road that is nice to visit for an evening snack.

Right along the main ocean road next to water in main section of town. Fountain is cool from every angle. Great place for a photo at this unique fountain.

The monuments at the Military Base include three planes, cannons and a stella dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Base. This area is approximately 1 kilometer from the center of town, and is a pleasant walk along the promenade. We took a taxi from the international cruise ship pier, which cost US$15. The main monument is a T-28 Trojan plane which was installed in 2007. It is dedicated to the 201st Fighter Squadron, which fought with the USA and it's allies in the WW2 Battle of the Philippine Sea. The Squadron did not lose any pilots or aircraft during the war. The planes that the division used were actually P47 Thunderbolts, and the pilots were known as the "Aztec Eagles". This plane monument also has the famous "Pancho Pistols" emblem. This type of plane was used by the 201st division on Cozumel, between 1961-1980.

There are plane monuments on either side of the main monument, which were installed in 2010. To the left is another T28 Trojan plane, The Mexican military had 32 T28 Trojan fighters between 1958-1982, To the right is a Lockheed T-33 (also known as a T-Bird), which the Mexican Military had 50, between 1961-2007. Behind the central monument, are two old Spanish canons which are great photo ops. To the right of the base entrance is a tapered white stella with a pyramid shaped top. A black plaque on it, states that it is in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the base.

After leaving the base, if you walk south on Rafael E. Melgar Avenue, there are many monuments and sculptures to be seen. As the monuments are located outside of the base, they are easily accessible at any time of day.

Definitely stop and see the monument. It is a beautiful tribute to what Cozumel is famous for - beautiful seas and fabulous diving!

At night this is a water fountain with lights. Cool place for a photo opportunity, or to just sit and enjoy the scenery.

This monument is a true testament to the artistic merit of the Mexican people. To stand beneath it and have a photo with the sunset behind is a lasting memoryl

This place is nice, right on the water and the water feature changes color at night. Best statue area downtown I found this far.
