An amazing spot! Getting there is a bit of a trek with small one way roads in questionable places. It is good to get there early and get good parking. The waves are like nothing I have ever seen. strong and high crashing against the rocks and becoming more and more controlled close to shore. Must have swimming skills not recommended for small children, inexperienced swimmers, or elderly. There is a steep climb down sand to water on beach.
Be sure to pick up food and beverages at the stops on the way close to the beach so good food trucks.

Fantastic waves and scenery. You can get into the protected area and play in the waves due to how the lava rock protects one section.
If the waves are large STAY TO THE LEFT to avoid drifting into sharp rocks to the right.

La Poza del Obispo is a beautiful beach pool located in the northern municipality of Arecibo, PR, just about an hour west of San Juan. You can see the surf break in the rocks with makes it a popular Instagrammable spot. Take a dip, enjoy the wind, work on your tan. Other nearby spots are the Arecibo Lighthouse and La Cueva del Indio. I would recommend to take some snacks and beverages as there were no food vendors when I visited.

Beautiful beach, but so dangerous for kids. Very strong waves even for surfers. You have to bring your own food and drinks or drive out to the nearest restaurant (about 5 mins away). When we got there, rescue team was searching for a missing person who drown the day before.

The first time my then girlfriend took me here, I was blown away...the view each time the ocean crashes against the coral reef, is breath taking. It is well worth a visit if you are in the area. But bring your own food and/or drink, there is nothing right there at the beach.

We stopped at this place by accident – was a closest beach. And I am glad we did. Huge white sand beach open to the ocean ( was to many waves to swim when we where there ) + plus rock enclosed natural pool protected from waives where is safe to swim . all of it just under small cliff with lighthouse. we had a lot of fun climbing rocks and finding little tidal pools or places to sit on the edge of the cliff ( you need shoes for this !) I recommend going to this beach for few hours or may be even a day. Tips : parking is in unpaved area or by the side of the road – but free), there no facilities or shower to was off sand . for food – few food trucks around, good food ( seafood salad is amazing) but nobody speaks English at all and no credit cards accepted . There is nobody to rent you towels, chairs, umbrellas – so bring everything with you.

Let me start with saying we didn't go to the observatory/lighthouse. We only went to La Poza beach (aka beach at lighthouse). This is a great 'Locals' beach. The immediate area leaves much to be desired, however we had a great time at the beach. There are two large rocks in the water and as the waves crash against them it shoots water 40ft in the air (see videos on You tube). Surfers came out around 4 and we enjoyed watching them. My husband and friends noticed the locals jumping off one of the large rocks and had to join in. What a thrill rush. I would recommend for the late 20's-30's crowd who are wanting to experience real PR (not the touristy stuff).
No bathrooms at the beach, but there are makeshift showers and the Lighthouse restaurant can be used if you really have to go. You can also rent paddle boats at the Lighthouse restaurant. Afterwards, we had appetizers and super yummy fruity drinks at the Lighthouse restaurant. A great day at the beach!

This natural beauty of a spot is located behind the Light House in Arecibo. It is in an industrial area of Arecibo with no resorts, hotels, or anything catering to tourist. This is strictly a locals' & surfers' best kept secret.
When you drive up to the parking area of the beach, it looks desolate. The parking area is on the sand. there are 3 cabanas with bench seats that you can sit on to get some shade. Directly in front of the cabanas is a lagoon created by the ocean water pouring over the reef that surrounds it and protects swimmers from the strong ocean currents & undertows.
The best time to go is during high tide. This is because the waves roll in anywhere from 5 to 10 feet and then crash against the back of the reef and explode into the air creating a spray of water that reaches up to 4 stories high. If you hold onto the reef when the waves come crashing down on you, you can get swept away towards the beach. The sounds of the waves exploding against the reef is powerful.
It is mother nature at her best showing us mortals just powerful nature can be and just how powerless we are.
The reef itself is about 2 - 3 stories high and the views behind the reef are incredible. However, be careful. The reef's surface is VERY Jagged and if you fall down you will look like you were put thru a meat grinder. You will need rubber soled shoes ... NOT flip flops.
To the east of the reef is about 2 -3 miles of unspoiled beach. The only sign of civilization are the modest private residences built on top of the 20 foot cliff above the beach. The beach has no vendors, no concession stands, nothing. It most likely looks exactly the same way it did before the Spaniards arrived.
The beach is great for long walks, sunning alone, and best of all surfing. The waves roll in at least 5 feet all year round. sometimes they rolls in at ten feet.
If you visit, make sure you use the bathroom before you arrive. There is only a port-a-john. Also, bring food or eat. There are a few local restaurants & food trucks on the road to the beach, so you may be able to grab something before arriving or when you leave.
If you can find this hidden gem & visit during high tide, it will be an experience you will remember for the rest of your life.

...if you go to a beach and feel like you have to be on alert for your belongings and vehicle AND you have to swim with somebody's dog, well the title will explain everything.
