Changhua Nanyiao Temple is unique, its has many architectural elements dating from the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945). This Taoist temple is quite charming, even if it is not very big. Even though it is not large, it is an important stopping place on the annual Mazu Pilgrimage. Mazu, often described as the Goddess of the Sea, is an important Taoist deity, especially in southern Taiwan. The Mazu Pilgrimage is one of Taiwan's most important religious events.

This is a famous temple in Chang Hua. Small by most standards, but simple. Don't expect any English but it was quaint and cozy with lots of incense smells.

Although located roughly 2km (south) from the Changhua train station, the 30-minute walk is definitely worth it. This Taoist temple is an important stop in the Matsu Pilgrimage. In fact, inside the temple complex is a large dormitory specifically for pilgrims. There are several buildings that are part of this complex. One of the halls (there are four) features a unique architectural style that includes Doric columns, Baroque-style decor and Japanese shrines. In fact, I felt that this hall had been lifted from an English manor house - exquisite!
