(a hike to Shuiyang Forest and its earthquake-created mystery lake) I finally went hiking the trail of the legendary of Shuiyang Forest and its earthquake-created mystery lake where is a popular for hiking and camping one or 2 days; one way is about 10km (6 hrs). We spent one night next to the lake with our tent; our dinner was the Hot Pot. After dinner we had the campfire and the hundreds of stars shine brightly in the evening! enjoying the peaceful lake. Luckily, we had two days sunny day, although it is kind of dry-season, but the scenery at the next morning did stunned me! Shuiyang Forest is definitely worth a visit for 2 days.

you need to take a bus from 杉林溪森林生態渡假園區 to the trekking start point. there's a short cut to go up , then you can chose to go left on the normal route to the Shuiyang Forest or go up to 鹿屈山(2200m). I went to left as my physical strength too week. It's quite steep on the way there, when you go to the end of the normal route (2020m), you can not keep going, you need to go up then go down, keep walking in the forest, then you will be arrive at Shuiyang (1822m), only one route. This was my first time to do trekking, and it's doable. 6 hours walk there and 5 hours back, total 20km. it's better to camp there for one night.

It will take 5-6 hours hike with some up and downs to reach this place and it's definitely worth the effort. Stay one night there and you can see beautiful sky full of stars. Make sure you wake up early to see another beautiful view with morning sun light. As local tour guide said, 6ish AM is the most beautiful time of the day.

The weather was nice and we're lucky enough that it didn't rain during the two-day trekking. It takes 7-8hr from exit to the lake, and better wear long sleeves since there're scratchy plants along the trail. There're two ways to the lake so you may take both for go and return. The trekking wasn't difficult and the scenery was totally amazing! Better get to the camping point earlier if you plan to spend a night since the lake is quite popular that sometimes it's really crowded.

After the 921 Jiji earthquake in 1999, some geography of Nantou county was changed. Shuiyang Forest was created. It was forest area due to the earthquake, it became barrier Lakeand and all the tree are flooded. Shuiyang Forest (水樣森林) is now popular for hiking and camping. One way is about 10KM and 6.5 hour walking. The most difficult part is the last 1.2 KM before arriving.. very steep and dangerous at the end of the journey. There is no accommodation whole trip. Only 2 way to reach this lake are camping or one day hiking for 20KM. Either way are exhausted. Perhaps this is why it's not highly polluted. The government is not suggest tourists visit here.. There are announcement "CLOSE" from the entrance and the middle way, however, it's too beautiful and not dangerous on the way. Here is still a popular hiking destination.
