佛手洞 Foshoudong (next to Siandongyan 仙洞巖) was a really neat place to visit. My friends had fun walking around the cave; it's not that big. To see the Buddha's hand, you have to go to the end of the cave and look up at the ceiling. You need to use some imagination, as the 4th and 5th fingers are sort of missing. 佛手洞 done together with 仙洞巖 (Siandongyan) was one of my favorite destinations for my 2 week Taiwan vacation.

The Buddha Hand Cave is a long walk or a short bus ride (number 301) from the town. The cave itself is nothing special. A gravel floor has been laid and there is quite good signage leading you to the only reason to visit the cave: the rock formation known as the Buddha's Hand. Quite interesting. Just about next door, there is the grand entrance to a Chinese temple. This turns out to be the entrance to Fairy Cave. This is much more interesting, as it has been entirely converted into a Chinese temple. There are both the normal images that you would expect, but also some really impressive statuary carved into the cave walls. The Chinese graffiti could be interesting too. A very narrow side passage leads to an additional shrine: that one is not for those of more than usual girth! Fairy Cave made the trip out from Keelung Station worthwhile. I wouldn't rate this a 4 without it.

This cave is in the vicinity of the Keelung harbour area. Out of curiosity, we decided to check it out because of the famous handprint of 5 fingers on the ceiling of one of its chambers. We were told that it was once a popular hiding place for soldiers. Although the cave is clean and well lit - with proper stone steps at the entrance and even flooring inside the cave, do be prepared for low ceilings, narrow and tight passage ways, wet floors, damp air, and the occasional water dripping from the ceiling. Also be warned that there are several routes inside the cave - if you ever get lost, just look for the exit signages on the walls. It's advisable to keep to the left when walking all the way in, and after 5 minutes of walking, there before you, up on the ceiling, are those 5 human fingers - absolutely astounding ! A precious work of art ! I'm clueless, however, why they call them Buddha's fingers .... whatever, it's worth the sight ! ☺️
