Keelung Harbour appears to be relatively small, but is is a deep water port that can easily accommodate large ships; Keelung Harbour is a popular port-of-call for international cruise ships. The port has been a point of entry for foreign intruders, and was for many years the main port for Taipei. It's known as "Rainy Port," it's famous for its drizzle. Keelung is 14 miles from Taipei as the crow flies; the train takes around 45 minutes.

Keelung has a long history as a port serving northern Taiwan, dating from the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945). These days it's best known as a cruise ship harbor. Although security is strict, once you are on the street, no-one will bother you. Feel free to look around, the market is interesting. If you want to visit Taipei, trains are frequent and tickets are inexpensive.

Keelung Harbour is the most important harbour for northern Taiwan. It was a major port during the Japanese colonial period, due to its proximity to Japan. Although the harbour appears to be small, it is deep and can accommodate large ships such as cruise ships. Keelung Harbour is fun to visit, it's a short train trip from Taipei.

Arriving in Keelung on a cruise ship puts your right at Keelung Harbor. When you leave your ship you can go to the right and into the Passenger Terminal where you'll find friendly and helpful people, currency exchange, toilets, and a queue of taxis outside. The train station is on the opposite of the harbor, a fifteen minute walk away. The night market is also about a fifteen minute walk, and two post ffices are within five minutes.

We stayed at the Keelung Harbour while on the cruise ship, the Celebrity Millennium.
The harbour area is great. It is really close to the train station and bus station so you can easily get to Taipei. Apparently there is also a night market close by but we didn't have time to go there.
There is a beautiful park and nice large boardwalk that you can use when visiting this area. The area also has restaurants, convenience stores and other shops so you can buy beverages and food at reasonable prices.
The cruise terminal building is a nice place to hangout while catching up on your correspondence as it has lots of seats and washroom facilities. There is also a money exchange, a tourist information center, and taxi stand. From our experience next time I come to Taipei we will use the cab service as it will allow us to see more sights in Taipei. It took us 2.5 hours to get to where we wanted to be in Taipei. The tourist information folks were very friendly and helpful. Of all the ports we went to on this trip, this harbour was the best.

We booked the service "Keelung Shore Excursion: Private Custom Tour" from TripAdvisor.
We only stayed in Taiwan for about 10 hours, this private tour is totally amazing. We didn't have to queue for tour bus, the tour guide picked us at Keelung Port and took my wife and me to the downtown of Taipei, we visited several nice attractions and had the beef noodles and bubble tea for our lunch break. We love the Elephant Mountain Trail the most, after 20 mins walk then what we saw is the whole Taipei city with Taipei 101 at the center. btw, our guide Lawson is also fantastic and dropped us back to the harbor on time. The best shore excursions ever.

Our Princess ship docked here and it proved to be a good stop as shops, 7-11 and markets were all within distance of the ship, walking. Good place to get items that are too expensive on the ship like bottles of water, soda, cold meds and other essentials. People in the shops were friendly and helpful. It is about an hour ride to Taipei so we also booked excursions there.

The board walk in Keelung is relatively new but has enhanced the view of the harbor a great deal, On a warm sunny day you can see hundreds of people enjoying the view with their families and children. Even the famous duck was here and the rocking horse. Great way to spend an hour or two in the sun and even see some sea hawks on a nice day.It is a nice day trip from Taipei and after can go to the night market and get some local food or shopping at the famous night market in Keelung.

Our cruise ship stopped in the Port of Keelung for two nights. This gave us a chance to wander around the town one day and travel into Taipei on the other.
We had a memorable introduction to the port. Some passengers from the ship were invited to view entry to the harbour on the helipad. It was fascinating to see the huge vessel maneuver through the channel and dock at the port. On the hills surrounding the town we could see the spires of churches or the shapes of pagodas. We also saw eagles as they wheeled in the sky. Magnificent!
We walked past stalls selling local wares, out of the terminal into a coffee shop area, where we could buy 'supplies' or small gifts. We then turned left and aimed for a huge temple on a hill. Eventually the hill defeated us, but we visited a colourful shrine, where ladies made us a cup and tea and gave us info on retreats.
Somewhere along the way we ate an excellent green tea icecream! Lanes were narrow and a bit seedy in places. The river divided the town. All the places we saw were close to the harbor - hence the title " The Harbor City".
We enjoyed seeing part of the town.

We were in Keelung to embark on a cruise to Japan. The harbour has an outdoor plaza where locals and families gather to watch cruise ships as well as the navy's frigates. A few eagles have made the harbour their home and it is a common sight to watch them swooping into the waters to catch fishes or shrimps. Photographers with long lenses train their cameras on the eagles.
In the evenings, families gather to enjoy the cool breeze. At one end of the plaza, a small group of elderly musicians was playing oldies songs. It was nice to watch elderly folks dancing to the songs and music.
From the harbour, we walked to a few nearby local attractions, including Keelung Miaokou Night Market.

Hi Hong Siong,
Do you think a day is enough to tour around keelung and their night market?

Hi, May I know if I will to travel from Taipei by train, is it convenient?
Basically, we just want to make a day trip and visit their night market to explore more. Can you advise and provide more suggestions?
I also heard the seafood there is good but is it expensive?
Thanks!

Hello Snoopy!
People find it easy to travel by train in Taiwan, especially in Taipei to Habour port. I think that if you want transport by train and also want to visit their night market you should arrange the way best fist in case you may get miss train. Seafood at the night market supper fresh and the price can easy to accept.
Good luck to your trip.
