When Taiwan was ruled by China, the authorities decided to erect a city wall to encompass down-town Taipei. The main gate was formally known as Lizhengmen. Today it is commonly referred as South Gate (Nanmen). In days gone by it was called "The Main Gate of Beauty." It's not far from one of Taipei's hidden treasures, the Botanical Garden. The South Gate was completed in 1884, during the Ching Dynasty. It remains majestic

Taipei's city wall was erected during the Ching Dynasty. This gate was completed in 1884. Lizhengmen was known as the 'Entrance to Taipei,' or 'The Main Gate of Beauty, and later the 'South Gate' The City Wall was demolished during the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945). The gate was rebuilt following Taiwan's Retrocession to the Republic of China in 1945, and has since been commonly known as the South Gate. The South Gate is built in northern China style. It is worth inspecting if you are in the area.

South Gate, also known as Lizhengmen, is a remainder of the Taipei City Wall, which was demolished during the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945). It is an ancient gate of the city. Today, there is no longer city wall, but this gate still remains in the center of an intersection. It is not far from Zhongzheng Memorial Hall.
