Though it took me 4 hours to decided on what brand of shoes to buy (because there's a lot of cheap but branded shoes within the area), if you're looking for a place to check out running/tennis shoes, sneakers, etc., go to Gongguan. Make also a side trip to National Taiwan University just adjacent to the commercial area.
Got myself an Adidas Neo Groove for NT$ 1,300.00++ =)

gongguan shopping districts has famous sports clothing brands such as Adidas, Nike, Converse, New balance and other clothing brands like Champion. The prices are about the same as compared to XiMenDing outlets. But in Taiwan, it is cheaper by only abit as compared to countries such as Singapore. There were not that many food stores in this area.

When planning your trip to Taipei, decide, which night markets/shopping streets you want to visit. Every neighborhood seems to have one or the other. Personally, this one does not offer anything the others dont, and it is not as locally accessible as one of the others. If you do decide, then take the green line to the MRT Taipower Building stop and follow the signs. I mean how many phone covers do you need to see ?

This shopping area is scattered with plenty of things to eat, to shop and to be entertained with. Unlike other commercialized markets, this area caters to university students. That means everything around here is VERY EASY ON THE WALLET :-)
Prices are low enough that you do not have to haggle and bargain for the best prices. It may take the fun out of shopping, but the hassle factor is already removed. All you have to do is to inspect for imperfections before you walk away with the merchandise.

Definitely a place more for younger folks and it can be quite busy weekend nights. But if you are looking for cheap clothes (low quality) or well priced athletic shoes like NIKE, ect that is the place to go. Their shoe prices are much cheaper than the department stores.
There is quite a bit of food in the area ranging from "street food" to restaurants but having been to only two restaurants there the value is very poor. Food is more expensive in that area but the quality/taste is quite poor.

As others say this is underrated and it’s not even showing up as a night market. If you saw TripAdvisor you would go to Shi Da but that’s so small. Come instead to This place if in the area.
Beef Noodles, Milk Tea and other various night market shops are in the area!

Even though this place is near the university, there are not a lot of things to see here. I would suggest going to the nearby Yong Kang Street which has many more varieties of shops and food to offer.

We stumbled upon this night market while walking around in the area and it was such a lucky find! Much smaller than the other night markets and more local. Our favourite meal of the entire trip was a beef noodle soup from a small restaurant here. Highly recommend visiting!

I have been to Taipei many times and have explored almost all shopping and night markets. Gongguan is the best when it comes to the prices of Shoes, clothes, and other sports related goods of any brand, they are usually cheaper than all other markets in Taipei and even major markets like Fa Yuen street etc in Hong Kong. If you want the latest models then you must go to the brand stores however if you are not looking for the latest ones then go to the multi brand stores and the prices will be even better.
The area has got amazing street food too, though you might find better options in some other markets like Shiling etc. Since it is close to the University, this area is always bustling with people and doesn't close too early. There is a very nice Korean restaurant too..unfortunately I forgot its name :(

I was hesitant to go to Gongguan but then I realized the event I went to was deadsmack right in Gongguan station. The streetfood is awesome, people are queueing for veggie omelets (see my attached picture to die for), I found that keychains are priced NTD$80 compared to Ximending which is $100. I found NTD$100 three paired socks and if I've looked and dredged deeper I will be able to buy more souvenirs compared to what I will be scouring in Shilin. This is as affordable and as good as what it's marketed to be and I will be returning for more soones.
