Artists' colony emerges from squatter village
May 2021
In the late 1940s, Chiang Kai-shek and his loyal followers retreated to Taiwan. Treasure Hill was an anti-aircraft installation, which evolved into a squatter colony. The squatters stole power, took water from the nearby Xindian River and also caught fish. Inevitabbly, the authorities took contol, aiming to turn Treasure Hill into a sustainable urban community. It didn't quite work out that way, and more artists returned than old soldiers. These days, Treasure Hill is an artists village, Visitors are welcome, Treasure Hill is walking distance from the MRT Gongguan Station (Green Line).

My favorite location in Taipei
Mar 2020
This hidden gem is a fascinating little village with an active artist community and is my absolute favorite location in all of Taipei. The odd shapes and arrangements of the buildings, an artifact of its origins as an illegal settlement, makes it fun to explore and lends the place a somewhat surreal atmosphere (respect the signs indicating where the permanent residents' private spaces begin, however). There are usually several indoor and outdoor art exhibits on display, often in an informal way, sometimes including videos and, more rarely, performance art at scheduled times. Cafes and shops may also be open: I highly recommend Tadpole Point. All in all, I recommend going with an open mind and heart and a desire to simply relax and take in whatever the experience provides (which will vary day to day, month to month, etc., based on what's going on and which artists are in residence). You can also walk down to the riverbank and go for a jog or bike ride along the river, or, in the other direction and under the overpass, discover fascinating street art.

Lovely calming space
Dec 2019
We really enjoyed our trip to Treasure Hill. It felt very peaceful, perhaps more so because we went during heavy rain so there were no other tourists about, and we were able to poke in and out of the different shops and spaces and talk to some of the artists. A different side to the city really worth visiting - if you can find a time when it's quiet.

Cute village
Feb 2019 • Solo
Take a walk around from the nearby metro station. It’s nice to see how artists all over the world put they’re art and how they live in such communities. Monday’s closed for tours...but just pass by the security and be quiet.

No treasure here
Nov 2017
I am not sure what the attraction here is.
Mostly closed stores without anyone around. Almost nothing was open and hardly anyone around.
It is also not that easy to get to.
Give it a skip and don’t waste your time.

Great place to explore
Aug 2017 • Couples
We liked the place with all its little studios and art galleries. The atmosphere is relaxed and it's a cool place for taking pictures! It's a neighbourhood with lots of stairs and hidden corners so we just loved to wander around.

A semi-abandoned village turned into an art village
Jun 2017 • Solo
The place with its half-ruined concrete buildings is quite peculiar. There are a number of galleries and the village has an interesting athmosphere. It's worth spending there an hour.

An interesting art village nearby the National Taiwan University
May 2017 • Friends
Generally nice as a safe place for casual stroll and photo-taking, for youth, family and international visitors. Some places were closed, it's hard for art lovers to enjoy the exhibitions in slow pace in dim and little rooms especially with the weekend crowds.

A bit of a let down
Mar 2017
I'd imagine this place is great for sunny summer evenings (since it's located near the river and has a smaller park there). But in honesty- I thought there was going to be more and therefore I was let down once I arrived. I didn't know where to go or what to see due to the poor map once there. So maybe read more about it before going there to be prepared.

I think the gongguan area is a nice place to visit rather than treasure hill.

Quiet
Dec 2016 • Solo
It was a Wednesday I visited and the place was almost deserted. I think i met the above reviewer on the same day and share some sentiments. Very quiet and only 1 exhibit on. I was lucky and met one artist. I think it might be best visited when something is on. It is a cute neighbourhood with old winding streets and nice to walk around. The contrast of the freeways and grey industrial highrise around this oasis of calm is interesting. I hope it reaches it's potential as it's good idea.
