    Beautiful Lake!
We drove from Taichung to Sun Moon Lake in March. We stopped at temples around the lake. The temples are beautiful. We bought boat tickets at Ita Thao Visitor Center. The ticket cost 300 NT. The boat stopped as hop-on-hop-off at Ita Thao Visitor Center, Shuishe Pier, and Xuanguang Temple. We arrived at the lake at noon and leave the at 10 am next day. We stayed on one night at Shui Sha Lian Hotel. The lake is beautiful.

Scenic and beginner friendly cycling experience
Many buses from taipei/taichung. We took 6670, try to ask the counter or google for bus timings as each journey takes about 1-2 hours with buses arriving at hour intervals. We rented bikes from OpenBike(recommended, friendly service) to cycle round to view the scenery. There are many routes varying in length and duration. I recommend the electric bikes for ease of travelling. Ferry is optional.

    Taiwan's most popular tourist attraction
Sun Moon Lake is located in the very center of the island of Taiwan. It is among Taiwan's most popular tourist attractions. The lake's name is derived from the lake's shape, which is like the sun in the east and a crescent moon in the west. Sun Moon lake, which is 8 km square, has many sights to appreciate. Apart from tourism, the area around Sun Moon Lake is known for agriculture. Tea gardens and the cultivation of flowers, which adorn the island of Taiwan, are features of the Lake. The Lake's changing moods intrigue visitors.

A beautiful lake with amazing scenery
I visited Sun Moon Lake with a few friends and found it to be quite beautiful. The scenery was spectacular with mountains around the lake. We took a boat ride around the lake and was able to really see its beauty.

A good place for a nice day
Dont expect some marvel of nature, as it is just a lake and you probably wont even see a sun or a moon. However with the right expectation it is definately a nice day out (I wouldnt spend more than a day trip). You can take a boat, bus, bike, walk or take a scooter (if you have a drivers license) to explore the lake and it's surroundings. There are tempels (Wenwu being the nicest), a pagoda, a town with food stalls and nature to visit. A lot of it is kind of a tourist trap which is kind of uncommon in Taiwan, but it is really populair with the locals as well. Dont buy tickets on the street (it's a scam) and ignore the Fallun Gon cultists and you should be fine. All in all it's a nice day on and around a lake which is still well worth the 1 hour and 40 minutes trip from Taichung. Dont take the trip from Taipei as it will cost you 4 hours.

Lovely spot with lots to see and do.
This is a lovely spot to spend two or three days exploring the lake and surrounding area which has lots to see and do. I took a bus direct from Taichung (about 2 hours) which leaves from the city close to the rail station and also picks up at the HSR station. Lots of very good accommodation in Shuishe (where the bus terminates), with plenty of shops and eating places all within walking distance. Yes, its obviously a tourist draw but I was there mid week in October and it didn't feel overly busy. Very easy to get around by bike (lots of hire shops), boat and local buses. Taking the ferry and the cable car to visit the Formosan Cultural Village is a must (although you can get there by local bus also.

    A Lovely Spot
This pair of man-made lakes, now one lake with the traditional small Lalu island in the middle, is a very pleasant spot. Lake cruises are available, and there are various points of interest around the lake, including temples, towers, the suspension walkway, and the impressive Wenwu Temple. There's a cyclepath/ walkway around the 30km perimeter. There's aropeway (cable car) up to one of the peaks. Lake fish is served in most of the local restaurants.

Stunning. If you have time, spend a few days in the area.
Sometimes you see photographs but when you are there, it doesn't look the same. Well this did. It was just stunning! I did a day trip from Taipei. If you have time, spend a few days by the lake. Peaceful, huge and serene. I expected a lot more tourists but it wasn't too bad. Explore and enjoy. Our tour included a boat ride on the lake which was lovely.

Day trip to Sun Moon Lake from Taipei
A little underwhelmed. Perhaps due to our high expectations travelled her from Taipei for a day trip. The lake is as nice and tranquil but if one had been to other lakes in Europe and NZ, this would not ranked as high. I recommend an overnight stay at lakeside or a day trip from Taichung.

After reaching to the vista outlook, I gazed upon the lake and saw the setting sun reflecting itself on the still smooth waters of Sun Moon Lake.

This is indeed a very scenic area of Taiwan. After the long day of sightseeing it was so relaxing to sit, to mediate on the beauty, to watch a bird flying, and to fill my soul with satisfying joy.

Lalu Island in the middle of the lake separates the lake into a part shaped like a crescent moon and another part shaped like a round sun; I can see how Sun Moon Lake was named.

The lake and its surrounding countryside have been designated one of thirteen national scenic area in Taiwan.

From the various other locations around the lake ... Wen Wu Temple, Cien Pagoda,
Jianjing Temple, Stuentzang Temple, Syuanguang Temple, and Xiangshan Visitor Center each one offers a different perspective of the beautiful lake.

Many of my friends said I need to visit Sun Moon Lake to make my trip complete when I go to Taiwan, they were right. It is the MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKE ... at Sun Moon Lake.

As someone who grew up surrounded by natural lakes this overdeveloped and overhyped attraction was quite a disappointment. If you haven't had the pleasure of experiencing many other lakes though you might find some enjoyment here! Be prepared for lots of other tourists and some confusing transport challenges (especially for foreigners). We did enjoy the views from the ropeway but would otherwise avoid coming here again.

Scenic lake to cycle around. There are some free bicycle rentals for tourists at certain vendor shops. Do ask around and get those deals! We only cycled to the 月牙湾, but you can certainly try cycling around the entire lake. Probably takes an entire day.

We spent three nights here on a tour around Taiwan which we arranged ourselves. Stayed at a hotel in Shuishe (Laurel Villa – excellent and close to the harbour) which was five minutes walk from the bus drop off and enjoyed some walking, cycling, viewing temples and took the ferry combo ticket across to Xuanguang (very good particularly the outstanding views from the Ci’en Pagoda) and Yidashao wharf (not much there other than the cable car). On our last day went to Chung Tai Chan monastery just outside Puli which is worth a visit. Sun Moon Lake is different from any other part of Taiwan. As the premier tourist destination in the country, we had braced ourselves for a tourist onslaught with commercialism dominating a beautiful part of the world but it was actually a very pleasant place to visit. While it can be very busy particularly with day trippers, in early morning and later in the evening, it is very peaceful. There are lots of boardwalks around the perimeter of the lake, many of these offer great vistas. The only thing that surprised us were the short dining hours, apart from Friday and Saturday, most places seem to stop serving after 7pm which perhaps reflects the lack of visitors staying overnight.
One thing worth considering are the weather patterns around Sun Moon Lake. Generally, the clearest part of the day is at dawn and after lunch, the visibility worsens. Our hotel host confirmed this to be a regular weather pattern. On his recommendation, we hired bicycles for a dawn start going anti-clockwise around the lake. So peaceful and serine at this time of day with few people out and about and we managed to see a delightful sunrise.

Sun Moon Lake is bounded by Lalu Island. The east side of the lake is shaped like the "sun" and the west side of the lake is shaped like the "moon" which is the origin of the name. The environment is very comfortable. The lake tour with the scenery of mountains and rivers is relaxing and intoxicating. You need at least a full day to enjoy the sights and activities there. I went to Sun Moon Lake on the Spring Festival ,so it’s very crowded. However, since I chose to go to a place with few people, I was not affected. Overall, Sun Moon Lake is a paradise in my mind.

This was our first family trip to Sun Moon Lake, and it was quite fun. We took the boats across the lake to the various stops. There were hiking trails, temples, food, and of course, great views. We got lucky because the weather was very nice when we went. Due to the pandemic, there also weren't too many people visiting the lake. If you have the time, there are plenty of beautiful places to visit around the lake that may not be popular tourist spots but worth a visit. The gondola ride was also worth a visit.

The lake has beautiful views and has is tranquil. The surroundings are lush and green and a balm to the eyes. Also, no trip of the lake is complete unless you do a cycling trip around the lake. The cycling route around the Sun Moon Lake is said to be one of the “10 Breathtaking Cycling Routes” in the world (CNN News) and we just have to do it. Go visit the Ci En Pagoda, visit the Ita Thao Pier and do the boat ride of the lake and visit the Wen Wu temple.

Sun Moon Lake is up in the mountains; the weather can be variable. This is not necessarily a disadvantage, because the lake has different atmospheres depending on the seasons. Sun Moon Lake is one of Taiwan's top tourist destinations, it is well worth a visit. Sun Moon Lake is especially beautiful in the early morning. I have been to Sun Moon Lake several times, I am also thrilled by its changing nature.

The lake seems to have its own weather system - there was fog on one side with bright sunshine at the other. the name of the lake comes from the shape of the lake contours that resembles chinese words for sun and moon respectively. Apparently, Chiang Kaishek was here and liked it well. I stayed at the nearby Fleur De Chine hotel which had a good view of the lake. The water color changes depending on the time of the day and perhaps the season too. there is a sacred island in the middle of the lake which is accessible only to the local tribe.
