    An industrial area transformed
This area, particularly around the swing bridge is a great example of urban renewal. Used to be a poluted industrial area but has been transformed into an area for walking and sightseeing. The best of the old buildings have been transformed into galleries and restaurants. Heaps of sculptures and art installations around and great pedestrian swing bridge.

    To be seen...
It is pleasant to take a walk along the shore with the city skyline in the background. Around there are various works of art, graffiti etc. scattered here and there. The Harbor bridge is also beautiful from which to admire the view.

    Kaohsiung’s River of Life!
Aihe, meaning 'river of love', passes through the center of Kaohsiung City and enters the port, but it is not a wide river like the Han River in Seoul, but a narrow river similar to the Thames River in London and is also short at 12km in length. However, it is a place that has played an important role in the city's economy and culture, and is the main axis of city life where various cultural facilities are located, but it is also a place where historical changes have been as great as the city's development. Before Taiwan was transferred to Japan in 1895, it was called 'Takao River' by the natives. After it became Japanese territory, it was dredged and used as a canal, and a port was developed at the estuary. In 1920, the Chinese character name was changed to a Japanese transliteration, followed by the second river. After returning to the Republic of China after World War II, the sound was changed to 'Kaohsiung River', but from this time onwards, we entered an era of water pollution due to industrialization. In fact, the name 'Eicher' is also said to have a sad history, one of which was a couple committing suicide by jumping into the river in the late 1940s. Since tourists began entering the riverside park during this period, a typhoon in 1948 caused a cruise ship company's sign to be blown off. The fact that only the letters '愛河', which were part of the name at the time, remained, caused the river to be renamed, and this was finally set as the official name in 1972. Water quality purification has been carried out since 1979, and it is now reborn as a symbol of Kaohsiung. It has developed into another tourist destination. It is a river that is the lifeblood of the city and is a place for many things to see and experience. It also has different feelings during the day and at night, so if you have time, it would be a good idea to visit it at both times.

Love River runs through southern Taiwan city
Ai He is the river that runs through southern Kaohsiung city and its suburb Yancheng. Ai He is usually translated to Love River. In the days gone by, Love River was a murky industrial area, but it has been transformed into cycle paths, parks and colorful Chinese monuments. Kaohsiung is one of Taiwan's landmark cities, it's full of temples and night markets. These days, the upper-class restaurants often gain Michelin stars, and the local Kaohsiung has night markets sell traditional street food. Officially, Ai He is a common Chinese name, but these days the river is always known as Love River.

This promenade is a nice place for an evening stroll in Kaoshiung city. It is clean, cool and breezy when we were there. The colourful lights and sights of the surrounding buildings make an attractive place to visit. It is a great place for night photography. There are cafes with live entertainment and karaoke, restaurants, night market stalls as well as a few buskers and street performers along the riverbank. Visitors can also go for a river cruise on the various types of boats for a fee. We chose to walk along the promenade and in the well-maintained gardens where benches are provided. Although it was not brightly lit, we felt safe. Definitely worth a visit (stroll) when you are in Kaoshiung city.

It was late afternoon, but not too late for a boat ride along the Ai He Love River.

The original name of the river was Kaohsiung River. One of the many boats cruising the river was Love River Cruise.
However, during a typhoon, the signboard of the shop was blown down, with only the first two characters "Lover River" left on it. There was also the story of unfortunately couple who jumped into the river killing themselves for love. After the tragedy was reported, the name of Love River began to circulate widely and then it became the official name of the river.

We rode the Kaohsiung Solar-Powered Love Boat and cruised for 20-minutes round trip along the beautiful Love River.

As we floated along River starting from the Love Pier, we saw many points of interest such as Kaohsiung Music Hall, Kaohsiung District Court, 228 Peace Memorial Park, Holy Rosary Cathedral, Kaohsiung Bridge,, Zhongzheng Bridge, Zodiac Wharf, Glory Pier, various popular cafe and dining spots on both side of the river.

One recognizable landmark is Ao, the Chinese mythical dragon fish creature.

At night the love cruise takes on a magical atmosphere with colorful lights on both sides of the river reflecting on the surface of the water and the bridges are lighted up adding the the magic river's stunning night view and illuminated cityscape

The Love River has become an icon of Kaohsiung City. It is worth a visit, walk, cup of coffee, boat ride, and bike ride day or night to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Whether it day or night, I can feel the LOVE ANYTIME ... at Ai He Love River.

Our hotel was right next to the Love River, so we used its walking trails quite a bit. There were a lot of interesting restaurants and cafes in the area of the river we were, and there are companies that offer relatively inexpensive night cruises. The area is well maintained, and there are flower beds in many places. Being in the middle of a big city and near busy roads, though, the air quality is not always great.

Ai He is translated as "Love River." Love River runs through the middle of Kaohsiung, Taiwan's port city. You can take a stroll along the banks of the river and get a snack from one of the food stalls. A stroll by the river is a popular outing for young people. If you have time, you can take a boat trip and see the city of Kaohsiung from the water. As for the name, years ago I thought "Love River" was a strange name for this murky river, but recently it's been cleaned up. So what is the origin of "Love River?" Like most things ,it's been lost in the mists of time.

We visited this river once during the day and another time at night. There were some bridges crossing the river and it was more beautiful at night, with all the colorful lights. We stayed nearby and it was quite convenient for us to take leisurely strolls along both sides of this river.

The buildings along the Love River are worth a visit. I was amazed by the unique and new buildings.
I was also amazed by the buildings in Dubai and Qatar, but the buildings in Kaohsiung are beautiful and harmonious. It's also fun to see them as a symbol of Japan being left behind in terms of personal income.

This used to be a stinky waterway in the city but now it turned into a nice, clean spot. When visiting Kaohsiung, coming to the river and taking the boat ride should be a must-do. It's relaxing, enjoyable, and fun. Beware of the cafe nearby though, they are quite a bit more expensive than your regular cafes.

It’s a rather lovely thing to do post-prandially; a wander along the banks of Love River. There’s a pedestrian only walkway and the lights glimmering on the rippling water is rather enchanting.

Another option is to take a boat ride... which is also pleasant.

As you walk you will be serenaded by rather a lot of karaoke singers who warble the evening away.

It’s great.

I visited Love River on 28 & 29 March, 2015. There were many signs and banner promoting a festival at Love River in train stations, along roads and on television while I was staying in Taichung.  Since I was going to Kaoshiung on 28 February morning, we decided to visit it that evening.

At 1700 hrs, we took a slow walk from 85 Sky Tower to Xinguang Riverside Park and Kaoshiung Expos Centre to take some photo of setting sun/85 Sky Tower. Then turn right to Haibian Road and walk about 20 minutes towards Love River. Took dinner at a small seafood restaurant called 168 Seafood about 1800 hrs. After a good dinner, we continued walking forward about 60m to reach Gaoxiong Bridge. It was very crowded here. It seem that half of Kaoshiung population was here. We had reached end of Love River before the water flow out into the sea.

We did not cross the bridge but carried on walking straight into Hedong Road. Both sides of the rivers were decorated with bright colorful lights. Even the bridges were lighted up and the ferries were colorful. There was a long queue for ferry. There were decorations, life size statues of cartoon characters, buskers performing on the street, singing, games for children and food stalls. Everything you want to do, you must queue. Queue to take photos, buy drinks, take ferry and even to visit the toilets. There were not enough toilets available. So we had to go to Ambassadors Hotel to use their toilet.

Photos taken showed only colorful lights and not much other detail so we decided to go again next day in the afternoon. We decided to call it a day at 2100 hrs and walk to other end of Ambassador Hotel furtherest from river to take bus #214A back to 85 Sky Tower. Before bus arrived, a taxi came by so we took it. Fare was NT$100.

Next day on 01 March 2015 at 1300 hrs, after visiting Formosa Boulevard station, we transfered to another platform to go to Yanchengpu station exit 4. On exiting, turn left to go into Wufu 4th Road and walk 350m to Fullon Hotel on the right. Note that the famous Taiwan chef A-Ji operate Master A-Ji Tea House on 2nd floor operating from 1100 – 1400 and 1730 – 2100 hrs. We were too late for lunch so we went up to 25th floor Premier Lounge to have British high tea costing NT$380 per person. High Tea is open from 1430 – 1700 hrs. While waiting, I took many aerial view of Love River and mountain on other side from the 25th floor. At 1430 hrs sharp, we were served with a small pot of tea each according to your choice of tea and a carrier with 3 levels filled with cakes, biscults, fruits and dessert.

At 1700 hrs on leaving Fullon Hotel to Love River, turn right to walk 120m to Gaoxiong Bridge – last bridge over Love River before water flow into the sea. Gaoxiong Bridge is a wide bridge with 6 lanes for cars and 1 lane on either side for motorcycles. If you turn right to walk along path next to river, you will reach modern Love River Pier after 100m. There are river boats here charged by solar panels on their roof if you want to go for a ride. Otherwise turn to your left to walk along the path next to river because you will be shielded by trees from the afternoon sun. This is a big path for pedestrians and bicycles only. We were walking on opposite side last night. There are many stalls, small cafes and shops here. On other side of river, you can see the tall Ambassador Hotel.

There is a river boat office here too just after Golden Love River Coffee shop before reaching to 2nd bridge on Zhongzheng 4th Road. You can buy a ticket for ride costing NT$100 on river boat which will bring you down to Love River Pier and back. Rides start from 1800 – 2200 hrs for weekday and start from 1500 hrs – 2200 hrs for weekend. It was not as crowded as yesterday night and we had a leisurely walk.

On reaching Zhongzheng 4th Road bridge, turn to right to cross bridge to opposite side and walk 500m to City Council station. 70m after crossing bridge, you will come to a bus stop with buses as 0北, 25, 60, 76, 77, 168東, 214A, 214B, 248, 8001. If any of these buses are suitable to reach your hotel/minsu, take it to save some walking otherwise continue walking straight to enter exit 2 of City Council station. We could take bus 214A or 214B or a taxi will cost NT$100 back to 85 Sky Tower. Since we were 4 person, we opt for a taxi which was faster and same fare.
