Taroko Gorge is a special place, with a beautiful atmosphere. We spent 2 days in the National Park - the first day deciding to opt for the shuttle bus (which cost us maybe $150) to explore the Shakadang Trail, walk around a bit and Tanxiang.
While the second day we had an awesome experience with Tonny (who privately showed us around the park). Tonny was awesome - we always felt safe with his driving, he spoke great english and took us everywhere we wanted and more (as well as helping us understand the history of the place).
We definitely recommend checking out the Cliffs (just outside the park), Shakadang as well as 'The Water Curtain' but theres so much more to see and some longer hikes for those who want to do them (as well as Hehuanshan mountain nearby if you want multi-day exploration).
Thanks Tony (you can contact him on +886 916 993 938 to book him) for the awesome help as well as thank you to the awesome nature of Taroko!

2,5+2,5 hours drive from Taipei to Taroko National Park. Really worth to do this Tour. Beautiful and colorful Canyons , Rivers and marble cliffs. A full day tour in a wonderful semi-tropical Nature . Our guide and driver Hicks, very professional, helpful and friendly person, leaded us in special places from early morning till late in the afternoon. We strongly recommend this tour!

We planned our tour during the May holiday. We came across our wonderful guide Tonny who picked us up in Taitung and as he was born there, he really knows his way around that part of Taiwan. We then took the coastal Highway all the way up to Hualien and he took us to some wonderful scenic spots along the way. Once we arrived at our destination, he showed us the night market, which has ample options of yummy food. The next day we set off early to Tarako national park, where our guide showed us wonderful areas before the big tour buses arrived. We then took the Shakatang Trail, as well as the Xiao Zhuilu Trail before the rain set in. All in all we had a great experience with Tonny and would highly recommend him if you need a private tour along the East Coast with an English speaking guide. You can just add him on WhatsApp on the following number: +886 916 993 938

Incredible landscape. Breathtaking views. Interesting shrines and temples. Plenty of different walks to try. I would rate this alongside Monument Valley and Yosemite National Park in terms of scenery.
This trip was recommended whilst we were in Taiwan and it didn't disappoint. You can get a train direct to Hualien Station and then hop on a bus from there which takes you all they way up to the top of the gorge stopping at various locations along the way. The train takes about 2 1/2 hours each wa and the bus another 90 minutes so this is a full day of travel. Definitely worth it if you have the time on your visit.
There are tourist centres, restaurants and shops at various locations if you need refreshments during your trip.

You can get a taste in one day, but you really need to spend 2-4 days to get the full Taroko experience. It takes forever to get around because you'll be stopping every minute to take pictures :) The are lots of options, you can rent a bike, a scooter, get a taxi, take a city bus, take tours, etc. Whatever fits your budget, time and travel plans. I suggest renting a scooter, costs around $18 US/day and there's nothing like driving through the tunnels and along the road in the open air.
There are lots of hikes with various skill levels, some require a permit though so check with the National Park office near the entrance to the gorge.
February is a great time to visit, almost no tourists, great rates on hotels/airbnb and mild weather (not hot, not cold).

Most visitors to Taroko Gorge come either by hiring cars and taxis, or on tour coaches. There are no public bus services to the area. Taroko Gorge is beautiful and includes the Tunnel of Nine Turns Eco-Rock Shelter walkway that runs along the gorge. The roads in the vicinity are narrow and visitors need to put on a helmet for safety. Although there are lots of tourists, it is a pleasant walk as the trails are long and can accomodate the buses of tourists that arrive. Taroko Gorge is an impressive natural spectacle.

The best national park in Taiwan with a lot of hiking opportunities. Prepare to spend at least one day here. The most notable easy hike is definitely the Baiyang trail with a lot of tunnels. My favorite scenic spot (next to the road) would be the Nine Tunnels Trail. We took a bus from Hualien here and always rode it on a day ticket while moving from one hike to another (250 NTD).

I have traversed Taroko Gorge three times and it gets better every time. It's best when the water is running high. Honestly, the best way to experience Taroko Gorge is on foot. You can marvel at the marble, crafted by the water over many, many years and polished until it shines. Of course, all credit to the veterans who straightened out the kinks and bumps so we can enjoy Taroko Gorge today.

Taroko Gorge is situated beside the Liwu River, near the Pacific Ocean. The most convenient starting point is Hualien. Taroko Gorge is famous for its zig-zag marble highway running around the Gorge, which offers ofers a magnificent view of the breathtaking scenes below. The highway was hacked out of the rock by veterans. It has an important strategic function, as it connected the west and east of the island.

From the swallow grotto, crystal clear blue waters, and tall marble cliffs, this is truly a special place.
Very glad I visited and wish I had another day or two to visit some of the other sites. While it was raining when we were there, it did not dampen any of the sights or views.

Walking all the way through Taroko Gorge is difficult. I suggest that you get a mini-bus that stops along the way. Walking part of the way is a good idea, there are many things that are worth seeing.

To have more flexibilty & not be bound by the infrequent hop-on-hop-off bus schedule, can we use easycard on the 1133A & 302 buses for Taroko? How much does it cost 1).Hualien-Taroko Visitors Centre & 2).per ride using either bus within the park? Any recommendation for english speaking day tour from Hualien-Taroko?

If you can get a few people together, sharing the price of a taxi gives you more flexibility. Our driver spoke good English and allowed us plenty of time to hike in the gorge. Taxi drivers near the main station are often touting for business.

Hi everyone, I am planning a solo trip and came across Taroko Gorge. While I do not drive, what are the best possible ways that I can get there? And is it possible to walk from Hualien station up to the gorge?

Hi,
I covered this in my review. We went by bus.
Its pasted below.
Enough has been said already about this amazing and beautiful place. We travelled here by bus from Hualien and I’ll explain how.
The bus you need is 1133a. We took the bus from the station right next door Thanks to the train station, we bought tickets from the office next to the bus. The fare is 250 each to ride all day. The bus wasn’t even half full, we left around 9 am.
With the same ticket you can get on and off any of the 1133a buses. You are given a map so can get off at various places and back on along the route. Toilets are often. Food is available but expensive (150 for a coffee).
There is an app for the bus but this is as unreliable as the timetable. As a rule I’d say a bus per hour or so in each direction. There is some confusion as to which stops where but despite this it’s a fantastic way to explore the park.
Do your homework as to where you want to go and use Google maps to see where you are. We got off at Shakadang trail (loved it), Lushui (nice place but exhibits in Chinese only. There is a short trail here too which was nice. Bring a torch for the tunnel), and Yanzikou (Swallows Grotto) amazing views here. We were supposed to get out at Qixingtan on the way back but somehow the driver seemed not to pass it.

Hi TripAdvisors,
We're cycling in Taiwan from Taipei to Kaohsiung. I would really like to visit Taroko gorge for a day or two along the way but have reservations about the road up from Hualien.
We are reasonably fit 30 year olds but are not professional cyclists. Can anybody offer any advice or reassurance as to how steep and strenuous the road is? Has anyone else managed it without prior experience or training and, if so, how long might it take?
Thanks
Sam

It is a long road up from Hualien on a bike. Even once you get to Taroko Gorge it is not bike friendly. We are hikers.

They are all pretty much the same. There are several shops at the park's entry, so just chose any of them.

We are supposed to go to Taroko George next week and Accu weather forecast for that day is : "Cloudy, showers bringing heavy rainfall in the afternoon". The "heavy rainfall in the afternoon bothers me". I don't know if it will be worth to do the tour considering our safety. So should we push through with the trip or not?
Thank you.

Yes, provided you have wet weather gear with you. When it rains in Taiwan, it really does rain! But footpaths are good on the trail through the gorge, so you should have few problems. Hope this helps.

Thank you BlueMeow. Any possible recommended trips replacing Taroko just in case? I'm looking at a full day tour, with nature; we'll be coming from Taipei; I don't know what will fit in a Dec trip.

We will be going to Tarako Gorge from Hualien, where would we catch a bus going to Taroko? What time is the first trip?
Inside Taroko do they stop in the entrance of the tourist spots or could they pick-up passengers anywhere along the road? Where do we buy an all day ticket(is it good for all busses and trains?)
In going out of Tarako Gorge, what time is the last trip of the bus? Afraid not to catch it. Thanks!

I would recommend hiring my a driver for the day because the buses in Taroko are THE WORST. We only got to see one trail because the buses didn't turn up or drove past us. It was a really frustrating day!!! A driver costs about 3000 NT for the day.
