This theater by Toyo Ito is a real beauty in Taichung City.
We saw a show there, in the blue little theatre inside: the acoustics is perfect!

This Theater is ten years in the making and Taichung is truly privileged to have Japanese superarchitect involved, Maestro Toyo Ito. Toyo and team didn't want the Theater to be an isolated box but that the Theater itself plays a pivotal part in revitalising the surrounding areas, and that the place is inviting and welcoming for people from all walks of life to congregate and to spend time together. This goal truly succeeded. The Theater is abuzzed with activities. The Theater is designed around superior sound accoustic and so, Toyo deliberately designed the internal layout to mimic caves and with internal river running through it. There are outstanding experimental amphitheaters at the basement nicknamed as the Dark Room, the Grand Theater on the second and third floor, and the fifth floor being the garden which is a popular haunt for the youngsters taking selfies. The surrounding is attractive with grand park and high rise for the rich and famous (no different from Central Park in NYC). You can easily spend a whole afternoon here. Not only that, the Theater has a different mood in the evening with its lighting effect. If you have spare time in Taichung and if you are passionate about architecture, I would recommend you to visit the Theater in the daytime and in the evening. Highly recommended.

This is a lovely modern building, housing the Taichung opera.
While the building looks absolutely wonderful from the outside, there were no shows nor tours within, so, alas, we weren't able to appreciate the interior of the building.

worth exploring even if you are not into art etc.
the place itself is surrounded by lots of greeneries and beautiful architecture. i must say taichung's town planning surprised me, and no wonder it is voted as one of the most liveable city.
there is a nice cafe inside where you can customise your own coffee and even name it yourself.
they even place chairs outside the building for you to really enjoy the peaceful surrounding.
walking distance to shin kong mall.

We visited ths National Taichung Theater with our younger son as our older son had work. We joined a guided tour of the place and we were glad that we did. This place is awesome. There's attention to detail. Stepping inside this theater made me feel like I'm being hugged and that I left all my cards outside the building. It's coz the walls are curved, not straight and so it feels like walking into a cave. There is not air conditioning on the first floor. Ice water runs underground for ventilation. I leaned on the wall and it felt so relaxing. The building has 6 floors, but going up the winding stairs was easy going. The in-house restaurant serve reasonably priced and good meals. I loved their packaged nuts.
I suggest getting the guided tour. These are available in Mandarin. If you want an English speaking guide, you have to arrange it prior to going there.

We had a wonderful few hours at the new theatre complex. We luckily had a volunter give us an excellent English language tour which explained the themes behind Toyo Ito's gorgeous building. We would have loved to attend a performance in one of the theatres but there was nothing suitable for our family. A must see attraction if you are in Taichung.

This National Theatre in Taichung was an excellent and beautiful Place of Interest that one MUST visit if they visit Taichung. The theatre was huge and there is a small coffee/tea outlet which one can relax and it's walking distance to Fengjia Night markets.

This controversial (why, I do not know) is a spectacular building that has to viewed from the inside. Walking around is free, and there are several cafes and restaurants of various price ranges. I would recommend taking an elevator to the top and then taking the stairs down.

This is one of the newest building to be opened in Taichung. The building architecture is very nice and is a good place for taking photos. There is a bar at the top floor of the building and has very nice view of the surrounding. They also serve quite nice beer as well as sardines. There are some shops selling books, musical instruments, musical boxes and flowers. It is a good place for families to visit.

At first glance, the appearance was 'funny'. After a while, you will find it more acceptable especially when you see that pattern everywhere. (even at the airport lounge)
Went on a guided tour inside, it was a typical all artistic design with very few if any columns or beams. No wonder if took them 5 failed attempts to have a builder. Coming from an engineering background, I wish them real luck in future maintenance because of all those embeddedcoling systems and fire extinguishers.
With only 320 parking spots, it will not be aiming to host huge performances. Would be interesting to try out the acoustic quality inside as they boast every seat to be the same.
