If you have to visit only one shopping mall in Taichung, it has to be Shin Kong Mitsukoshi's flagship at Zhonggang in the Xitun District. With outdoor sightseeing plans shelved on a stormy day in May, we headed to the largest mall in Taichung which had a cineplex, department store, supermarket, countless restaurants and cafés all under one roof, spread over 13 floors and two basements.

We headed straight to the Customer Service counter with our passports to apply for VIP membership which entitled us to discounts of up to 10% on most merchandise and at selected restaurants in the building. With the VIP discount and the VAT rebate for tourists, we enjoyed savings on the shoes and jeans that we bought. On the weekday we were there, staff outnumbered shoppers; it was a joy to receive attentive, personalized and warm service even though we didn't buy much.

During our visit, there was a Line themed event at a section of the mall's event hall which was popular with teenagers who were taking selfies with the Line characters and displays (see photos). Foreign bakeries like Paul's and Laduré were on the ground floor, and we spotted Harrods occupying a tiny area in the basement. Most but not everything here is high end though; there's Uniqlo, Tokyo Hands, Muji, and pocket-friendly Taiwanese fried chicken, Japanese curry house Coco Ichibanya and even a tiny 7-11 Cafe. Fans of shibuya toast will be happy to find Dazzling Cafe in a quiet corner on Level 4.

Its like the paragon in singapore. You can see all the big designer brands here and the well off shopping here. Prices are nit much cheaper than singapore though so not much here since I can get the same back home.

We go here for shopping but there is nothing special except delicious food. There is pizza, Japanese cruise, Chinese dim sum , captain lobster and bakery shop. My son likes the tempura very much but I prefer the Chinese dim sum.

Very nice department store in a good location for the surrounding apartment complexes - has a cinema located on the upper floors which is very good for families - the department store has some nice restaurants as well and is located next to another department store so if you really fancy a shopping mad day that is a good place to start - but as I said, it can become VERY busy on national holidays - its within easy reach of the hotels on the main road but you would need a taxi for the short run in the summer as it gets very hot and humid in Taichung - you would also have to wait a short while for a taxi at the two taxi ranks (front and rear) when its busy but nothing painful - the shopping mall has all the standard basic / mid and high price point outlets - something for everyone.

The mall is very pricy and is a typical Japanese-style mall. You can find nice tea shops as well as stores. Most importantly there is a good Japanese-style grocery in the lower levels with unique finds.

When it opened, this department store was touted as the largest in Asia - although I'm not in a position to judge. The Japanese style department store is well designed, and the customer service is excellent. After trying other places to find a specific item, I was finally successful after going to Mitsokoshi. Prices tend to be a little higher, since the vendors have to pay an above-average rent for the exposure this venue gives them. There are quite a number of good restaurants to choose from if you need something to eat. There are four basement levels of car parking, but you will need to spend at least 1,000 NT if you don't want to have to pay the parking fee. There's a very fine grocery area in the 2nd basement. Imported items that may be unavailable elsewhere can often be found here.

This is easily my favorite mall in Taichung. The movie theatre is the most comfortable in my opinion, it has a great food court and restaurants such as Gordon Biersch, which is one of my favorite restaurants.

A few specific things to enjoy: B2 has a great "cong you bing"(green onion pancake) stand, and a Japanese "taiyaki" (fish-shaped custard-filled pancake) stand, which are both delicious. Other notable stores are an Apple store, Fayaque (books/magazines/electronics), Sony, Nike... Mitsukoshi really "has it all".

Quality mall very popular with both tourists & Taiwanese shoppers. Good access to all floors by escalators. Clean with plenty of toilets. The theme restaurants interspersed at all levels offer a whole range of food from traditional noodle dishes, dumplings to MacDonalds. Plenty of taxies outside to get you home.

I find the retail assistants here more friendly and attentive. They also have 14 floors of good shopping as well as F&B and cinema.
