Did the introduction to Taiwanese cooking with Jodie and so glad I did. It was fantastic having a one-to-one lesson and by the end of the day I felt like I had made a new friend as well. Food we made was delicious, hardly needed to eat that night! Jodie will let you watch what she does or get your hands dirty and join in - it's your choice.

PS Take the bus rather than a taxi for an even better adventure.

I spent a very enjoyable time with Jodie learning how to make dumplings. Which i have made on several times since i have come home. Jodie was an excellent teacher and i am looking forward to doing another course with Jodie when i am in Taipei next year.

Jodie was just amazing. We learnt so much and so enjoyed eating all the dumplings and pancakes she helped us to make. We would highly recommend this cooking class to anyone visiting Taipei. It was an absolute delight. Thankyou so much to Jodie for a womderful day.

If you are foreign to Taipei/Asia, have limited knowledge about Taiwanese cooking, don’t want to get your hands dirty, and want to have cultural exchange with someone local, this is the class for you.

But if you are someone with a bit of cooking experience under your belt- and are fairly knowledgeable about Asia/Taiwan, ---> Steer clear.

My sister in law and I signed up for Jodie’s Kitchen because it is rated #1 on TripAdvisor and we really wanted to sharpen our Taiwanese cooking skills. We cook fairly regularly on our own, but wanted to learn traditional cooking, since we both realized that we cook mainly fusions, mixing American, Italian, Chinese, Japanese etc.
Unfortunately, the class we signed up for, One Day Taiwanese Cooking, didn’t really meet our expectations. All the ingredients for the course were pre-sliced and diced – so for most part, we watched her simply blend and stir, and hence, not much participation from our side of the table.

In addition, for the amount of food/recipes that we got, we felt that it certainly did not command the exorbitant price that she charges (3,000NTD/person). For someone coming from Europe / Americas, ourselves included, the price seemed normal, around $100USD. However, when I compared Jodie’s Kitchen to Best of Tuscany & Taste of Florence, both around 80Euros, and factored in the cost of living in Taipei, the course paled much in comparison.

Jodie’s forte, however, is quite possibly in the cultural exchange aspect of this class. She is quite loquacious and open to sharing. For us, since we really wanted to focus on the food, we felt that she digressed quite frequently and seemed to be bouncing all over the place.

All in all, I am still giving Jodie’s Kitchen three stars because I believe the course will be great for the average tourist/amateur cook looking for local tastes and a few hours of cultural exchange.

My son and I took Jodie's "Taiwanese Cooking Introductory Class". We loved it. I've taken lots of cooking classes, both in the US and abroad. Most concentrate on preparing set recipes, but Jodie concentrated on how to use Taiwanese spices and ingredients to prepare anything. She used a few recipes to show how to incorporate Taiwanese flavors into any dish that you might prepare at home. AND THEY WERE DELICIOUS!

Nearly a year later, my wife and I still talk about this tour. It was one of our favorite things we did in Taipei. We got to get off the normal tourist path and try some fantastic food. We enjoyed all the tidbits we learned from Jodie, from explanations of rituals and prayers within the temples to a bit of history on the markets we visited. Really loved it.

I did the dumpling class alone, but I learnt so much more than just a dumpling recipe. Jodie is a very inspiring woman. She really enjoys what she's doing and it shows. She taught me to make the basic dough which we used for dumpling, potstickers, pocket and the much wanted scallion pancake! Yummy! Even a dessert with black sesame which was also very good. We enjoyed all the great food with extra pickles and tea and had a very nice talk about different things in life. Jodie introduced me in some Buddhist life lessons which I found really inspiring. I spent the whole day there, although the class was only meant to be 4 hours. She's very welcoming. I had a lovely day at her house overlooking the mountains and a part of the city.

I had a class with Jodie in May. It was only me in the class, which was great. Although it was quite expensive, it was worth the money as I really enjoyed the experience, all of the food was simple yet delicious. It was also vegan/ vegetarian friendly which suited me, and I'm sure meat eaters would equally enjoy the class. Thoroughly recommend.

I took the dumpling class with one other person (stranger danger!!) who ended up being our travel friend for the rest of the week! The dumpling class taught me so much about the dough, fillings and technique. Perhaps could have used a little more instruction on the cooking methods but I figured it out on a couple of successful test runs since. Thank you Jodie, for opening your home and teaching us your methods. Lots of tricks (flour off the counter) which I will make me remember you always. If you have a few hours to spend doing something unique, off the track, give her a call and do this. And your appetite!

After reading the reviews on tripadvisor I was really looking forward to cooking with Jodie, and the session was even better than I hoped! I tried the Introduction to Taiwanese Cooking class in September 2010. Jodie's place was easy to get to, I just printed off her directions in Chinese and the taxi driver arrived without hesitation. Her place is gorgeous, plenty of open space for you and other classmates to sit down, stand, and overall get involved in the cooking process.

The class lasted the advertised 4 hours and I would not have shortened it--Jodie is really packing in a lot of information and showing many different techniques and variations to each recipe, which I think will give me flexibility in applying the recipes. I think you can take away a lot from these courses--especially the Introduction to Taiwanese Cooking--whether you're a Beginner or Experienced Cook. I cook frequently but I was still jotting down notes like a madwoman--there is a lot to learn with both new ingredients and new recipes. Jodie will show you what ingredients are available here in Taiwan, as well as what you are likely to find--in my case--back in the US or good substitutes.

I'm really happy I took the class and I think it's one of the best things you can do while you're in Taiwan--pictures get stuck in a box but you can use these recipes over and over!
