About
In Taipei for New Year’s Eve? Then be sure to catch the city-wide countdown ritual at Taipei 101! An exhilarating fireworks display will shoot from Taipei 101 to celebrate the new year. For the best views, head to Xiangshan early to battle out photographers for a good spot. The East corner of Taipei 101 and the North Bank of Keelung River offer also good views of the show. After midnight, head to a star performance or the numerous parties around the city to continue the celebrations!

The typical NYE activity

Watching the fireworks on New Year Eve has been my routine for many years. Be ready to secure a spot around Xinyi district early as it usually gets super crowded! We decided to do the countdown at AI club as there’s a balcony right in front of Taipei 101 with breathtaking view. The fireworks never disappointed me every year!

Exciting countdown.

I have never been to Taiwan during the countdown which I heard so much about. On 31Dec 2019, off I went with my daughter. A beautiful morning with cool breeze splashes the face we reached Taipei. Initially we wanted to watch the fireworks from around Taipei 101 but in the end we headed towards Rainbow Riverside Park. The awesome crowd start to build up by 11pm on 31st and it grew so big that you do not have a place if you are late. Honestly speaking the view is spectacular as we are able to see the choreography fireworks so far and so clear. Its so far but it felt as if it’s right in front of us.It’s really fun.

Spectacular fireworks display to usher in the new year
Dec 2019
We went to Taiwan to specifically watch the New year fireworks display of Taipei 101. And true enough the fireworks show was nothing short of spectacular. Two hours before midnight we went to the vicinity of the building. There were already a lot of people enjoying the food and drink stalls set up near the building. We waited for the fireworks display near a city parking area near Songzhi road. It has a very nice view of the building so that we were able to watch the whole fireworks display as it unfolded. Truly a great experience.

Wonderful fireworks

Really love the fireworks! It was really crowded near the stage area, but if you just want to see the fireworks, just avoid the area near the stage because you can still find a good view of fireworks in the surrounding area that not really crowded. If you going back by bus, you have to queue first.. somehow there will be some people who manage the queue, and its pretty quick because they already prepare many buses for people going back. Overall, it was a wonderful 5 minute long fireworks!

Close to 101 is too packed
Dec 2018 • Couples
If you like mega crowds this is the spot. Post up next to 101 then get herded like cattle to the overflowing MRT stops leading away from the madness. Are the fireworks cool? Yes.
But, there are better places to view the fireworks from like a friends rooftop with a view, or even spot throughout the city where crowds are not so bad.

A Spectacular Experience!
Jan 2019 • Couples
For our experience, we got our viewing spot somewhere behind the Eslite Store, facing towards Taipei 101. It was quite a distance away from the building but we were able to get a full direct view without any trees or obstacles blocking. We arrived somewhere around 10.30pm after a late dinner and waited for the Countdown Fireworks. (If you want to get a more close up or bottoms-up view, you would have to arrive earlier to find a spot.) It was raining all the time and it can get quite uncomfortable. We were fortunate enough to have a transparent umbrella and raincoats. As the time nears the new year countdown, it will start to get more crowded and not long, you will be within a sea of umbrellas. At first, we were a little concern that the folks wouldn't close their coloured umbrellas. Thankfully as we began to countdown to the New Year, the folks around would naturally close their umbrellas =)
Overall, it was truthfully a once in a lifetime experience with the amazing and creative visuals on the Taipei 101. Put your phones down after taking your first few photos and selfies and trust me, experiencing it first hand is much more worth it =) I hope you get a chance to have your new year's countdown at Taipei 101!

There are a few options when it comes to viewing the New Year Eve fireworks
1) There are restaurants around the city which offer a good view. (Though you would most likely need to know where and which restaurants, you will also need to make a reservation and dine there to enjoy the view.)
2) Empty spaces throughout the city (Roads will be barricaded off for the crowd)
3) Elephant Hill
4) Hotels with good views

Some other tips:
1) Remember to bring an umbrella if it happens to drizzle or rain (Transparent ones are available at the 24 Hour Marts)
2) Bring along some light snacks and drinks while you wait for the time
3) A small groundsheet / picnic mat (To rest awhile while waiting or to put your bags)
4) Wear comfortable shoes (Shoes with cushion, you are going to be standing for awhile)
5) Visit the loo before you find your spot (I didn't see any portable toilets around)

Amazing Experience
Dec 2018 • Family
Not the best pictures that I can share here - as it was raining and where we were, plenty of smoke from the fireworks - but it was still a great experience.
